Congratulations ToonTowner for annihilating the competition in the
first ever RCT2 coaster contest here at New Element. Is anyone really
surprised? ToonTowner has emerged from the pack as the premier RCT2
parkmaker, ahead of all the other big names here at NE, proving his
worth time after time with each thing he releases, and "Gila", his
tremendous wooden coaster is no different. Also the pioneer in RCT2
custom theming, ToonTowner stacks his entry with tons of never before
seen theming ideas, all thrown together in the most perfect fashion to
create a flawless atmosphere, of the 'sacred western town' that you
see. The various crosses located throughout are used to absolute
perfection, and it actually reminds me of a very enhanced version of
Last Arch Angel's "Testament" park. The coaster itself is brilliant as
well. The custom side supports sprawling from the lift hill are done
beautifully. The rest of the layout is a great assortment of
airtime-packed hills, swooping helixes, and great layouts that interact
with the theming. In all honesty, this contest ended up being a
no-contest, Toon had it in the bag. |

Second and third place entries were a much tougher competition then
first. I ended up going with Butterfinger's "Comstock Dash", for
various reasons, most notably the length and size of the ride, just
making it more of the same quality. This marks Butterfinger's second
straight 2nd place entry, after "Anaconda: Escape From Amazonia" fell
short of x-sector's "Evolution" in the Blockbuster Challenge a few
months ago. This time, Butter's entry takes a much different approach,
as Comstock Dash takes riders on a journey of various landmarks across
the United States, with various mishaps at different ones. Hop aboard
either the Diamond or Gold mine-route, each with virtually the same
course. The ride leaves from the very nice western town it starts in,
and The Alamo is the first major landmark you see. That marks just the
first of many, as the Rocky Mountains, Ole' Faithful, Grand Canyon, Rio
Grande, Mount St. Helens, Pike's Peak, and Sante Fe are all available
through various parts of the ride's layout (Note: Some of the landmarks
must be seen aboard the Trans-Continental Railway instead). Great job
Butter, maybe next time you'll get over that 2nd place hump. |

Barely missing the silver medal comes Natelox, with his incredibly unique entry, "The Lost Beasts of Maharajah". You can tell from the instant that you open the park that it's pure Natelox, as his theming styles haven't changed one bit from RCT to RCT2. The interesting thing about "Lost Beasts" is that it's the first ever RCT2 coaster to technically go...trackless! Themed to some sort of Indian God myth, the ride has a lot of dinosaur-inspired theming, leaving parts of it very remiscent of Jurassic Park areas from various parks. The Raptor Cage of the ride is phenomenal, featuring the ride's only inversion, a semi-enclosed loop inside. Invisible boosters through various parts of the track really enhance the ride. The Raptor Cage also includes this Dive Machine's only 90 degree drops on the ride, but there are a grand total of 4 (going up and down) in this one area alone. Several times through this ride, you really feel as if you'd veered off course, sitting vulnerable to your surroundings, before an unseen booster sends you through an overgrown rose-bush patch, or speeding past some dangerously jagged rocks. Excellent job Natelox, and congrats on making the top 3. |

RRP makes his first appearence in this contest's winners with this very impressive TRI-dueling set of coasters, suitably named "Rampage!". A set of three, colossal wooden coasters that race to the finish on a (granted, very short) layout. This ride is really a story of two sides. On the positive side, just seeing that massive tangle of track together is incredible, and the trains duel/race very well while they're going. Great speed, pacing, all the stuff you'd need to make a great coaster layout. The negatives are there as well though. The theming is rather boring and uninspiring, and the ride is over before you know what happens. It seems as if the ride just lets off when you're racing past the checkered finish line (nice touch by the way), marking an end to what could have been one of the greatest rides I've ever seen. Still, it's very solid. The ride station is excellent, probably the second best of the contest (behind Gila, of course). Funny, I feel like I have more to say about RRP... |

Instead of giving someone else the chance to place in the NextElement Challenge, RRP cleans out the contest with both the 4th and 5th place entries. This time, he goes steel with his compact Beemer, "Sepsis". The coaster isn't the most stand-out one you'll ever find, but there's something very subtle, very refined about it, that just makes it excellent in it's own fashion. The lift hill was done very well, creeping barely above the raising hill below with tunnels spaced through the lift hill. The ride really uses the terrain to it's advantage, featuring an assortment of inversions, drops, and helixes all wrapped around various pieces of land. A very nice, giant loop situated next door to a streaming waterfall starts the ride off, before the 'little' inversions take over. The ride's 2nd inversion is actually a corkscrew, something you hardly ever see from coasters, especially good coasters in RCT. That's followed up by a barrel roll that flies through the center of the giant loop, before a highly themed Cobra Roll sits on the edge of a cliff. Another corkscrew finishes the ride off, before you head into the very nicely done, industrialized brakes/station area. Great job RRP on placing twice, and stealing someone else's spot in the NextElement top 5. |
