Announcing Xcoaster International’s newest park in it’s ever growing chain, Xcoaster International’s: Eon Odysseys. Based around the literature and studies of master science fiction author, Arthur C. Clarke. A Hugo and Nebula award winner, as well as the writer of the novels 2001: A Space Odyssey and 2010: Odyssey Two, he has also shared an Academy Award nomination with Stanley Kubrick for the film version of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and he is credited with the first proposal of using orbiting satellites for communication purposes. This park takes visitors from the nostalgic World’s Fair all the way to the moon of Earth and even billions of years into the future and several millennia into the past.

You can find out more about Clarke here:
http://www.fantastic...ur_C_Clarke.htm I'll probably use that site from now on rather than paraphrasing any more books like I do below.

You might be thinking, “Woopie, another freakin’ future themed park.” Well, it is future themed, but this will probably be one of the first in a while (that I’ve seen at least) that isn’t just based around abstract concepts or worn out ideas. Rather, the different rides and areas are based on different novels and stories. So a lot of it might not appear especially future themed, depending on the area. Anyways, who’s to decide what’s futuristic? The main thing is just that it’s sci-fi themed and a lot of it takes place in the future, but it’s not always the generic future. You can think of each section as having whatever theme it has plus the future motif (in varying quantities). For example, the Lys section takes place billions of years in the future, but it’s main futuristic characteristic will be that it will have some glass and unusual archy on the buildings. It’s actually going to be a rather rural section. On the other hand, the very large moonbase section (and it’s subsection) will probably appear somewhat typical, except that it’ll be almost all enclosed. The Overlord’s Domain will be really out there, while the World’s Fair will have a retro/city park atmosphere. I think you get the idea.

Anyways, with each update I'll continue adding more long info posts. I'd put them all out now, but I know you wouldn't read all of it, so I'll add about 1 giant paragraph at a time, besides what I have to say about whatever screenshot I add. This one is pretty long, but most of them won't be.

This is Rendezvous with Rama, a themed Euro Mir style Mack spinning coaster. Rendezvous with Rama (the novel, possibly a movie soon), is about a giant cylindrical "asteroid" that comes plummeting towards the general area of Earth and the spaceship Endeavour (seen here) comes to do as the title implies and inside the "asteroid" named "Rama" (it's the future and all the Greek and Roman mythology is used up) is a weird and mysterious alien worldlet. Anyways, seen here is the station for said ride which is housed inside of the spaceship Endeavour. The coaster train departs out of Endeavour and goes into a dark ride show room filled with stars with Rama silently spinning in the corner. As it departs this room the train engages the spiral lift hill and slowly spirals up around Rama, which is inside the large black building, which is also supposed to look like Rama on the outside, with mirrors around it's base so that it's height is exaggerated from above (The mirrors aren't in these older screenshots). Once the train leaves the lift hill building it slowly orbits among the Rama towers and and eventually drops and twists among them and finally re-enters the Endeavour station.

Also, I know that it doesn't have Euro Mir style spinning cars. I've partially modeled some, but I do have serious doubts about them ever being in RCT2. So we may just need to use our imaginations.

Also, the park is still under a lot of construction and based on my building techniques, a lot of even this ride and the surrounding areas aren't yet complete. So if something looks bad, like the lack of landscaping (although there won't be any trees outside since this area is supposed to be on the moon) and that the moonbase structure near the bottom of both pics isn't complete, that's why. Or maybe my work is just bad. You can comment either way.

BTW, in the link I have near the top where I mentioned the movie, note one of the product ideas on the last slide. Haha. Maybe I can do consulting?

Some more Rama movie links. http://movies.yahoo....v&id=1808405622
http://www.space.com...ilm_991217.html
BTW, I haven't heard much on the status of the movie since around January except that it's still happening, so I don't really know if it is.

Anyways, I really appreciate comments. I'll post updates of pics and/or info later. I have a few other things that I'm ready to show you guys, but quite a few things I still need to do a lot of work on too. Also, I may have a preview download up near the beginning of September.

This is looking great. The airlock looks wonderful.

The only thing is the 'wings' are really short, but I don't know how they're supposed to look...

Do NOT change the wings!
The ship is awsome!

You genius. I was going to do a Rama-themed mini one day. :p But the Arthur C. Clarke collection idea is even better - I'm a huge fan of his work. I hope you pull this off well - it looks like you are doing fine so far. However, I'm not exactly clear on how you are going to pull off Rama itself. It could be a little awkward just being a large black cylinder, standing vertically - it doesn't even look as though it's going to be round. I'm afraid I'm not a big fan of the looping coaster concept quite yet either. I like what you've done with the Endeavour so far; however I would consider adding some of cBass' black background around it, if you have that in your scenery, to give the illusion of floating in space. Same with things in other areas.

It's funny, I was just thinking about this earlier this evening. Have you read Clarke's latest novel Time's Eye, the collaboration with Stephen Baxter? Well, I was thinking how many RCT parks are similar in concept to the world after the Discontinuity happens. Clarke probably got the idea for the novel from browsing NE :!!: .

And ARRGHH, they're doing a Rama movie! :@ I was thinking about becoming a sci-fi movie director when I grew up so I could make that movie.

EDIT: Never mind, my idea wouldn't work if you read it already.

Oh, and are you doing both 2001/10/61 and 3001? I think some of the ideas and concepts put forth in 3001 would make for stunning results in RCT.

Park concept is brilliant, and the park looks brilliant so far as well. I can't wait to see more of this project.

Wow, i'm pretty much in awe of the people doing blockwork like this - it shows great foresight and natural skill with the forms involved (how highfalutin did that sound?!)

What i'm trying to say is good job - Euro Mir has always looked like a great concept ride, and it's good to see someone taking that on in the world of rct2. It may have been done before, but not in this context, I don't think. Well done.

The ship is great and your work with 1/4 tiles is great. My problem is with some of the walls... Now, I'm not familiar with the theme but in the first pic the entrance gray area (where the queue line is) is awfuly plain... Same goes with the black wall in pic #2...

Either way, very creative work. Keep at it! :)

whoa, lego tycoon.

LMFAO!

Anyway I love the ship, however everything else just looks plain and boring next to it. Try to spice up the surrondings a bit with some detailed futuristic archetecture or something. Use more of the white too since it looks clean and sort of Sci Fi on it's own.

This reminds me of that park that Darkjanus was/is working on with the insanely cool ship surrounded by archecture that just seemed boring in comparison (to the ship). Although his stuff was all dark...

:)

Keep up good work like what you have for the ship ;).

ride6
• Xcoaster%s's Photo
First, about the design of the ship and the wings:
I forgot, I was going to include a sentence or two explaining the ship a bit. Though in the book I don't think Clarke ever mentioned anything about what it looked like, in most of his books the space ships are meant to stay in a vacuum all the time. So they usually wouldn't be aerodynamic at all, such as the Discovery from 2001:
http://lx.brusset.fr...r Discovery.jpg
However, I needed my ship to have landed on the moon (and in the book it landed on Rama). So it needs to be pretty small, Space Shuttle sized, so I figured I'd pretend the Endeavour was able to be used in low gravity/low atmosphere flight, unlike most of Clarkes typical space ships. So I included some small wings near the back for that purpose, but because it still would never be landing anywhere on Earth or even most planets, the wings didn't need to be too big. Then I also realized that in order for this thing to be able to go in any direction besides a straight line, it'd also need some kind of directional jets. So that's what the things on the ends of the wings are and the set near the front of the ship which could also be used for braking.

Now, to Panic, the other Clarke fan
"I was going to do a Rama-themed mini one day." - You still could; I'm a really slow worker. Plus, there's a lot of other ideas you could do. Something set inside of Rama would be great. That's the main problem I think with my Rama section is that thematically it all takes place outside it.
"But the Arthur C. Clarke collection idea is even better - I'm a huge fan of his work." - Me too.
"However, I'm not exactly clear on how you are going to pull off Rama itself. It could be a little awkward just being a large black cylinder, standing vertically - it doesn't even look as though it's going to be round. I'm afraid I'm not a big fan of the looping coaster concept quite yet either."
It's meant to be a design similar to Euro Mir:
Euro Mir
So, I figured if I had it spiraling up inside the biggest of the cylinders, then orbiting around them, that would fulfill the Euro Mir end of the design. However, like I said before, the problem with this is that the coaster would never really explore the landscape inside Rama. I was originally thinking of doing that, but this was a much more realistic approach, and to do the inside of Rama would require almost an entirely new section. My plan was that if I ended up doing two of these parks (I'll explain that later), one of them would have the interior of Rama with possibly a Mack water coaster (so as to not piss off the Mack), a simulator, some flats, and a Dragonfly suspended coaster of some kind, making it more of a separate section of the park, rather than part of the moonbase.

Also, to make the main lift cylinder (the big one in the middle that's supposed to be Rama) more round, I was thinking of trying to make some custom scenery that's like the rounded wall, but bigger, so that instead of the wall of Rama being "curve, flatwall, flatwall, flatwall, curve" it would be more like "large curve, flat wall, large curve".

"I like what you've done with the Endeavour so far; however I would consider adding some of cBass' black background around it, if you have that in your scenery, to give the illusion of floating in space. Same with things in other areas." - Yeah, I think I might do that around the base of Rama so that it doesn't just look like it's on the moon. However, I'm going to keep Endeavour as it is since it's supposed to be docked on the moon. I've used some of cBass' black pieces already in the park. In the purple show building in this pic I used some so that it seems like the coaster train is going through space. I've also used it on the indoor section of "The Hammer of God." I've just tried to refrain from using them too much in the open since I want the park to be as realistic as possible.

"It's funny, I was just thinking about this earlier this evening. Have you read Clarke's latest novel Time's Eye, the collaboration with Stephen Baxter? Well, I was thinking how many RCT parks are similar in concept to the world after the Discontinuity happens. Clarke probably got the idea for the novel from browsing NE idea ." -
Yeah, I read it a few weeks ago, I was thinking the same thing. However, this book will be a great help for this park. You see, my original RCT1 park had a section that was going to have the Clarke books based on time, time travel, ancient times, etc. Well, as I came to read more of his stuff I realized, "Shit... he doesn't have any books on said subjects!" So I canceled the section for this version of the park, since the RCT1 version only had a decent CCI woodie named "Time's Arrow", a rapids ride called "The River of Time" (I was running low on ride ideas), a drop ride called "The Fall of Babylon", and a 450 ft. tall or so Tower of Babel structure. However, only really Time's Arrow had anything to do with Clarke and the rest of the area was just loosely themed to Babylon, since I thought he wrote more about that than he really did. And the Tower of Babel was ugly and blocked out many other sections of the park since it was so tall. But now that he has a book about all of those subjects and I can screw around with the Discontinuity thing, I have a reason to make this section again. I might still named the main coaster "Time's Arrow" though, just since that's the greatest name possible for a multidimension coaster. Think about it. But the Discontinuity will be fun and I can imagine it will be neat looking to have little Eyes here and there.

"And ARRGHH, they're doing a Rama movie! pissed.gif I was thinking about becoming a sci-fi movie director when I grew up so I could make that movie." - You might still have a chance. It doesn't sound like there's been any real progress on it. There's always the Childhood's End movie too.

"EDIT: Never mind, my idea wouldn't work if you read it already." - Yeah, unless if it's Glide Path, the Venus Prime series, or some of his non-fiction, I've probably read it.

"Oh, and are you doing both 2001/10/61 and 3001? I think some of the ideas and concepts put forth in 3001 would make for stunning results in RCT." - What did you have in mind? I was planning on incorporating parts of 2001/2010/2061 into the TMA1 excavation site mini-section and the coaster that'll be there, but the plan didn't really have much of 3001. Frankly, I just haven't really thought about including it, but I guess I could probably do it somewhere.

BTW, this doesn't have much to do with this, but have you read "Beyond the Fall of Night" by Clarke and Gregory Benford? I just found out that Gregory Benford is going to be my physics lab professor next year! That's freakin' awesome! And I suppose it does have a little to do with this since two sections in the park will be based on that book.

To mantis:
Thanks. I actually have messed around with the Euro Mir style before in my park XI's: Legacies of India on the Ruin Raiders ride. I had the spiral lift hill inside the building and I tried to have it stick around the building, but the layout in general was a bit of a deviation, as was the fact that I decided to make it have an inversion, a splashdown, and I pretended that it wouldn't have the Euro Mir type spinning cars (which is pretty easy to do, since it doesn't have them in the first place). I just realized after visiting Europa Park that that kind of ride would be perfect for this coaster.

To Disney Freak:
You mean to the left of the blue ceiling, right? Yeah, that area isn't done at all yet. After working on The Hammer of God queue I have a few more ideas I can do too. Also, I'm going to replace some of the gray around this park with other colors, just I'm going to wait until I get more done so that I can choose colors that mesh better, and colors that I haven't used too much. As far as the black wall, that's the main Rama cylinder and it's supposed to be pretty much featureless, so there's not much I can change there. I have a few ideas, but there's little I could do while still keeping with the theme. Also, as I said earlier in this post, I might try and make some kind of new curved wall for it so that it looks better.

To MachChunk:
Basically because when I'd started this many phased park project, oh so long ago, I hadn't read any Asimov. When I'd started this project I was about halfway through reading everything by Clarke, so that's where my expertise was. Right now I'm going through Asimov. Maybe in RCT3 I'll make just a general sci-fi park with Clarke, Asimov, Heinlein, Bradbury, Baxter, Herbert, Benford (w00t!), Dick, and some others. That would be a lot easier since I could do more building styles and I'd have many more sources to draw from. It might please you a tiny bit to know that the A.I. Exhibition Hall in the World's Fair section is the Asimov Exhibition Hall. He was the only one that I named one of the Halls after that never co-wrote a novel with Clarke.

To ride6:
I don't think I'll be having much more in the area where that screenie was from, besides what isn't done yet and maybe a few smaller buildings, but remember, this moonbase section takes up about 1/3 of the park and it's entirely enclosed. That's a whole lot of structure. Plus, the Diaspar area should have plenty of crazy futuristic archy. And I've been using a lot of white. My main colors for this park so far have been: gray, white, black, light blues, dark and light red, dark and light purple, surgical green, and gray/brown. But I'll try to still work on my archy.

Thanks for all the comments.

Oh, and I'll put an info/maybe screen update in another post after this. I think this one might be too long as it is.
• Janus%s's Photo

Something set inside of Rama would be great. That's the main problem I think with my Rama section is that thematically it all takes place outside it.

I've been thinking of doing that for a long time! :)
Though I haven't read anything by him in a while, I really like Arthur C. Clarke, and so far, I really like this park too. That spaceship, as well as details such as the little grey/yellow truck, is brilliant. The only thing I'm not sure about in this screen is how it all works together, how the park is as a whole... But that's really hard to tell from just two screens. Didn't you show this a while ago at rct2.com, by the way?
• Xcoaster%s's Photo
Yeah, I showed these screens during the Structures Convention. But that's been lost. And what I'm working on for the RCT2.com Hyper Coaster Contest is in this park. So that'll be another preview you can get, if I win. If not, you'll probably just get to enjoy some pretty screenies.

Here's the update I promised. It'll give you a bit of an idea of how the park will work. I’ll highlight each section a little bit more later, but for now I’ll just list off their names, what their theme basically is, what books and stories they’re based off of, and basically what kinds of rides they have. I’m trying to be general on the rides for now so that they’re more of a surprise. But some you might be able to figure out from the story names. Probably not, but maybe. One’s really easy. It’s practically a bad pun.

After typing "Unnamed Urban section" so many times, many I should just call it Urbana? Actually, is Urbana a real place that Clarke uses a lot but that no one knows of, or is it made up? What about Astrograd? Also, is Odysseys the correct plural of Odyssey? Or should it be Odyssies?

Right now I'm working on making a dead spider biot to go on another of those moon tractors for transport to the upper level of the Rama research station.

Hey Xcoaster and/or d4rkj4nu5, I have an idea about how to pull off something on the inside of Rama. It's a very technically challenging method, just the concept behind the whole thing, and you have to choose your scenery carefully, but I think if done successfully, it could be very groundbreaking for custom scenery in general. I am looking into incorporating this method into at least one project while I'm at NE, and I can think of no better medium than Rama. If either of you guys are interested just PM me.

Here's another update. I got this ride looking better last night. This is the S&S Thrust Air coaster in the World's Fair section, "The Trigger." The novel "The Trigger" is about a device that creates a radiation that makes gunpowder ignite from a distance and the effects this machine has on society. You can read more about it on the Clarke page I mentioned at the beginning of this topic.

After getting some feedback on this park I've been a lot more inspired to work on it and I've gotten some work done in several of the sections, plus I have some great ideas for later. One I have that I think'll be awesome is a stretch of the chairlift themed after a scene from the 2010 movie.

And the last general park info update for now, this time about the real life history of this park and how I originally started it and stuff:

This project has gone through several phases along the way and is currently in its fourth, but luckily most of them have been pretty short lived so it really hasn’t taken that long overall. The first occurred when I was working on an early RCT1 park based around my neighborhood and I decided to build a Clarke themed section since I had been reading a lot of his writing around that time. I built it in about a day and I thought it was pretty cool. It had some of the same rides that will be in this version, but only with one coaster and a few other rides. The problem was that it didn’t fit the park’s overall theme that well, so I got the bright idea of starting an entire Clarke themed park since I still had a lot of good concepts. So I demolished that section (sadly I saved afterward and have nothing left of it now except a bad pic) and began Xcoaster International’s: Millennium Adventure. I built the entire park pretty quickly, but when I’d started it my theming abilities were pretty bad, so when it was almost complete I realized it was horrible. All I really had left to do was add trees and finish up the theming, but it had so many problems that I almost gave up on it and continued construction on XI’s: Hawaiian Paradise instead. Eventually I came back to it and started to touch it up some, but once I decided it was a failure I instead decided to wait until RCT2 came out and I’d continue then.

RCT2 was released and along with some of my other parks I tried to convert the old RCT1 maps into RCT2 ones, but luckily it only worked once and that was with one of my decent RCT1 parks, for if it had worked with more of the RCT1 parks I’d probably have to be working off of too many of my old designs and it wouldn’t be too good. So I waited a little longer since that wasn’t working and instead began planning two brand new sister parks based on XIMA. The reason for two was because one of the main problems I had it RCT1 with XIMA was that the park was too diverse with way too many coasters, so I figured I’d have some of the main coasters in both parks and spread around the other minor coasters and sections to which parks made more sense. One was planned to be on a man made island off of New York and the other would be in Somerset, England. The Somerset idea came from that I found out about plans to make a Clarke Institute museum over there since that was where he was born, and I thought it would be cool if I had that XIMA park connected to the Institute via monorail, and I would build my version of the Institute on another map. Anyways, I planned these out in great detail and I began the New York park, but I was very dissatisfied from the very beginning. This may have been because it was before custom scenery was doing well and so I didn’t have a lot of variety in the park that I wanted and my archy was lacking. Or maybe I was just lacking. Anyways, I got some of the World’s Fair completed, but I ran into park maker’s block and I stopped working on it, though I continued planning both parks. Eventually I pretty much gave up on these parks and decided that with the announcement of RCT3 that it would be unlikely that I’d finish one park at that rate, let alone two. So recently I had a renewed interest in the plans and since I was very unhappy with my current progress with the park I demolished it all, sent it into the scenario editor to get new theming, and restarted work. This time I don’t have any plans of making two parks, rather I will just take the best of each park and put it in this one. However, now I’m not sure of where it will be located. I’m going with Somerset for the moment and I’ll just try to cut down on the New York based themes. I’m not sure how that’ll work though, since two of the major themed areas relied on being based in New York.

Here's the last update for a while. I think I'm going to wait until I have more interesting pics to show, probably from other sections. This is from the World's Fair section, of the ride "Atomic Antigravity Machines", themed around antigravity, mostly based on "What Goes Up" from "Tales from the 'White Hart'". Really, it's a minor ride, I'm just showing this since this pic shows what I'm going for in the World's Fair section. Specifically, sort of a cross between an old World's Fair and an English park (since I think I'm going with the Somerset location). Ignore the lost ape.
