Trainer

A memory trainer is program that allows the player to cheat in a computer game by modifying the game whilst it is running. The term ‘trainer’ generally applies to simple programs that edit or freeze a single value in the games memory, for example to increase the number of lives a player has. However in the context of RollerCoaster Tycoon the term ‘trainer’ generally refers to a much more advanced program predominately aimed at editing the player’s saved game whilst it is in the game’s memory. It is easier to edit the saved game whilst it is in memory as it is not encoded and there are less checksums used for error and cheat detection.

Almost all RCT trainers use the Windows debugging API to modify the saved game. The Dragons IOA v6 Trainer for LL is the only real exception to this as it uses code injection to insert additional menus into the game’s code.

The Beast Trainer

The Beast Trainer is a popular trainer for Loopy Landscapes, it is no longer updated.

The Beast was the first trainer to introduce the Zero Clearances operation and it was also the first to allow object stacking and track merging without knowledge of hex editing. 8Cars and Codex both have features in some way derived from The Beast.

Codex is a trainer aimed at parkmaking and not playing the scenarios. The trainers main use is to make things that are not normally possible by modify objects after they have been built. All objects can be raised, lowered and duplicated. Certain types of objects (e.g. ride track) have more properties that can be modified by the trainer.

The trainer also makes hex editing a lot simpler and can be used to make track invisible.

DragonsIOA Trainer

DragonsIOA was a very popular trainer when it was first released. It has largely been surpassed by Codex and The Beast now, but it still has several unique features.

Version 6.0 was never finished but it is the only RCT trainer to feature in-game menus and the only LL trainer that can remove height restrictions for rides on Windows XP. The beta version has a bug meaning that the ‘Ride options’ dialogue cannot be opened if there is a ride with a name longer than 8 characters1). So to remove height restrictions apply the hack on an empty map and then load your park, the height restrictions will be removed until you restart the game.
