Having previously gained rct2 Runner-Up spots at NE with Klamath Lake
and Myths, Legends & Folklore, the RCT Masters are back for a third
time with this long-awaited park from Mick, Mike, Toon, rwadams and Kai
himself. Acorn Springs Resort is a sprawling forest park, based loosely
on the continent of Europe. The park was started over a year ago, and
it's obvious that some of it shows its age. However, this ends up being
quite beneficial to the quaint, traditional atmosphere - there is
certainly nothing lacking in terms of composition and atmosphere.
The story of the park is long and drawn out -
Mick was the first to build, beginning with the entrance area and
parking lots. It's a trend for realistic rct2 parks to have large car
parks, access roads and entrance complexes, and Acorn Springs is no
exception - luckily the craft with which these amenities are included
means they do not bore the viewer. Mike was the first to build a proper
area, contributing the 'Gloucester Woods', a heavily forested area with
a main avenue of buildings and attractions. Next to go was Toon,
creating the 'Black Forest' in homage to the well known area in the
south of Germany. Shown below is the castle he built which, as Kai's
readme points out, only hinted back then at what was possible with TT's
own 1/4 tile blocks.
Kai was next to go, making the eclectic 'Thistle
Wood Falls' area - it is slightly out of keeping with the traditional
theme of the rest of the park, but what else could we expect from rct's
own pastel guru? The architecture is fun and challenging, and the
attractions are quaint as ever - but the landscaping and water use
really stand out. 'Weevil', especially, continues the tradition of
quirky rides that Kai always manages to dream up. Kai was followed by
rwadams, who took the place of the currently absent Judge. Roger added
the carefully crafted 'Acorn Springs Raceway', as well as the wonderful
'Ardennes' area (below), with authentic architecture and thrilling
rides - 'Sabotage' in particular shows off his improving coaster
skills. However, the buildings hog the limelight; Roger's buildings are
always both austere and inviting, and this area is just another in a
big range of styles he has taken on.
Mick was the last to go, adding the tranquil
'Gairloch' area which is home to a very snazzy B&M called
'Helmsdale Falls'. He must have been glad that the park was finished,
but it still took Kai over 3 months to finally send it into NE for this
award. It is thoroughly deserving of this title, though, and continues
the success of the RCT Masters in producing quality parks with alarming
consistency. With several impressive projects in the making (Master's
Pallete, Nascar) the Masters are set to continue their role as one of
the leading clubs in the community. Well done guys.
