Cascades Amusement Park
Well, although Sboarder announced his retirement from the parkmaking community last week, his Cascades Amusement Park still ranks in as a runner-up this week. One of the few 256x256 parks I've seen completed (of course, there's Euroscape)...I felt a little bit disappointed when learning that a good portion of the park was a mix of water, trees, and parking lots. Still, what I did see was some great, classic, realistic RCT2 parkmaking. Really underrated as a parkmaker in my opinion, I felt Cascades could have been a huge awakening party for everyone else. Still, enjoy your retirement Sboarder, after parks like Tropical Gardens, Six Flags Virginia (good memory eh?) and now Cascades, you have quite a resume to look back on. Good luck with RCPro, and I hope to continue to see you around New Element.
First we get a look at the park's opening plaza area. Some of the nicest theming and architecture found all through the park is here. One thing I noticed about Sboarder, is that he doesn't like to overdo his theming, he leaves it realistic, charming, but sometimes leaves you yearning for more. In this screen, I think he dropped that for a little while, and just enjoyed making this area beautiful. The yellows and tans mix perfectly, and the pathing system is brilliant. Very nice job here.
Here's a perfect example of Sboarder's style, as exhibited on "Curse of the Black Pearl" (which reminds me, go see Pirates of the Caribbean today!). The theming is evident, and the theme is definitely understood...and accomplished nicely, but it's "light" theming, not too heavy, and very realistic. Something I could definitely picture riding in real life. The liquid itself is very nice. Although it's not flashy or gaudy, something about it really drew me in, more then most other rides in this park. Maybe I'm a sucker for the RCT2 pirate theming, or maybe Sboarder really is just a great parkmaker who deserves a little bit more respect, regardless of whether his style fits the 'NE usual'.
I know I didn't do the best job in the world taking this screen here, but I was trying to capture both the "M Y T H" Floorless Coaster that I enjoyed very much, and the "Elevator Malfunction" attraction that was one of the more creative attempts of theming through the park. It ended up an awkward mix between the two, but I think the point is still there. Again, you get a taste of the realism style, a style that hasn't been seen too often since the glory days of mrICE and Segaman75. Maybe after Cascades people will finally add SBoarder's name to that list. If only the parking lots weren't quite so big, and a little less trees were used with more actual park in its place, Cascades would be a definite spot-getter on my List. For now though, I just acknowledge it as a truly beautiful realistic park, and everyone else should do the same.
