Hey ride6! No one's responded yet, just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

I got a Gretsch Catalina Maple kit a few years ago that I've been happy with. It's just a shell pack -- 22" Bass, 10" and 12" rack toms, 14" and 16" floor toms, and 14x6 snare. I never could get a good sound out of the snare that comes with it for some reason, so I eventually upgraded there but it's otherwise a pretty nice setup. I think I paid $750 for that. They also make an Ash kit for a little less that's an even better deal I think because it has a usable snare. Make sure you get the version with the 16" floor tom if you do because there's two different sets. 14" floor toms sound kind of weak to my ears. Also, since you're looking for a kick pedal, I highly recommend the Gibraltar Intruder direct-drive bass pedal. Super smooth and it's got a lot of oomph to it. It's a little pricey, but it should last forever so it's worth it I think. There's a lot of great pedals out there I'm sure, but that's the one I got and I'm very happy with it. They make a double pedal version too if you're into that.

All in all though, I guess it depends who's going to play it. If you do find a drummer, chances are they're going to have their own kit anyway and you'd be better off spending the extra money on a good set of drum mics to make it sound good. But if you want a kit to learn on yourself (and it's way worth it I think :) ) than I recommend one of the Gretsch Catlina kits like I said. And eventually a brass or steel snare for rock music.

We only need good drum overheads, everything else we have for mics are already the industry standards, which means that even if they're not perfect, they're certainly NOT the weak spot in the set up.

I've been learning kit and I'm finally, slowly, getting somewhere with it... but it's difficult to play guitar, sing lead and play drums at the same time. ;) There's a limb shortage going around...

Thanks for the advice though! I'm a big fan of Gretsch drums in general and have had the Catalina kits at the top of my list for what I would get, but it's always best to have 2nd opinions because I've only played one kit (and very little at that!) that wasn't a store model (which are almost always thrashed and never tuned properly).

ps- Really glad to see you Ed! Hope we can catch up sometime.

ah, sorry i forgot to reply. another option you could consider is the tama silverstar. they just came out, and have really nice birch shells, top notch finish options, and a really nice price.

Tell me about it! Heh. I'm experiencing the same problem myself right now. I just wanted to mess around on the drums and record some backing tracks to finish up my song demos and low and behold, I actually like playing the drums a lot and it's a hard choice now whether to switch fully or keep playing guitar. Not to mention it's a lot easier to find a good guitar player than a good drummer. What you need to do is come move to California so we can take turns. Problem solved.

    :mantis:

Or not.. but I think that's a good solution in theory. Find a drummer who also wants to sing and write songs so you don't have to compartmentalize your music talents completely. That's what I'm trying to do anyway. Easier said than done of course.
