I'm trying to reinstall RCT2 on my desktop computer.  For a while I had the game working then all of a sudden it stopped working, causing the computer to freeze and reboot itself.  It was suggested I uninstall it and reinstall and since then I've been getting this error message:

    Component transfer error

    ---------------------------------

    Component: minimum

    File group: minimum

    File: D:\data2.cab

Error: data error (cyclic redundancy check)

It's been suggested that perhaps something in one of the Windows updates is interfering with something in the game.

Can anyone help me out?  I'd really like to get back to the park I was making.

Do you get this error while playing or while installing? An installing error usually means your disc is fucked. Try pirating a copy to see if you can install it that way.
  • thirstydeer%s's Photo

Both.  On my laptop I can't install it because of that error message.  On my desktop I have it installed and have been on-and-off playing the game.  I haven't touched it for a little while and all of a sudden when I sat down to play it over the holidays I got the message trying to run it.

Know anywhere I can get a pirated copy?

Just google man, I guess I can find a link if you really need it

Thanks for the suggestion.  I searched around and found a bunch of CD cracks designed to allow you to play the game without using the CD but that doesn't help my problem.  My problem is I can't re-install the game via CD onto the computer.  At that point I can use the crack to keep playing it but till I get the game installed again it's useless... or am I not understanding you right?  Maybe send me that link you're thinking of if you think it'll still help?

The suggestion wasn't to google a no-cd crack. It was for your other question.

So am I right in assuming there is no fix to my original post?  That is, that I can't seem to install the game using the CD and need to find a way around that?  I was working on a park - my best one by a long shot - and I don't want it gone.

If you can install a pirated copy, but not your disk version, then that'll confirm that your disk is the issue. If you can't, then it would seem to be a windows issue. Try it if you want more help troubleshooting.

I haven't been able to find a pirated copy of the CD to install off of to test that theory.  All I've been able to find are the no-CD files so that once the game is installed you don't need the CD to play the game.  Can you point me to a pirated copy?

Not without getting myself and the site in trouble.

aim me thirsty if you have it

Like itm said, we don't allow the distribution of pirate copies of RCT here, that includes in private messages. If you wish to divulge in any illegal activity, you'll have to do it off the site.

    Give Chris Sawyer money guys.

... at this point he's not going to get any.  The game isn't sold in stores... at least not around where I live.  Anyway, sorry if I caused trouble I was just trying to find a way to get the game working again.  I'll check out sites like Kijiji and Craigslist to see if I can get a used disc cheap and hope that works.  If anyone can suggest something that doesn't violate policies I'd be happy to hear it.

You know there are other options than CD right? GOG and Steam both carry the game. If you were to pirate you'd likely end up with a setup.exe file, not an ISO image file. Sooner or later you're dealing with a digital version, not a disc version. You can get the games for as little as $3~6 on GOG or Steam via sales.

I could really care less about the piracy considering I've bought probably 3+ copies of each game over the years, but it's quite difficult right now with the Bay having been down for so long. If you don't know what you're doing you probably won't find a good torrent anyway.

You can still get discs on Amazon, albeit used. Shops over here (well GAME) sell RCT2 still.

I bought it via Steam.  Unfortunately the problem with that is I can't filter out the WW and TT scenery/objects/etc because I don't use the expansion packs when I make parks.  The only RCT2 option was buying the Triple Thrill pack.

The other issue I'm trying to solve right now is what folder I put my saved object data/saved games/etc.  Anyone know about that?

  • Stoksy%s's Photo

Program Files -> Atari -> RCT2. If you use a workbench then filtering out WW/TT objects won't be a problem, it's usually quite obvious if an object is from the expansion packs anyway [have been using it since the beginning and have yet to have any issues].

  • thirstydeer%s's Photo

Unfortunately that is incorrect in this situation.  Because the game was installed via Steam the files and folders aren't where they would be if I installed the game via the CD.  That being said I figured it out.  I opened a scenario, saved it as a saved game, and then did a search on the start menu for the folder it is in.  Now I'm back on track with the game.

I do have another issue in the sense that because my small scenery objects list is so long in the sandbox that I can't scroll down.  My hope is to move all the TT and WW objdata into a separate folder and then the list will be small enough to work.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and efforts to help me.
