Adding the .dat file into your objdat folder only adds the object into your repository of available objects to choose from. Each map can only allow a certain amount of obejcts you can use within the individual map. You must select the objects you can use by going to the object selection screen under the debug tools dropdown menu if you're using openrct. Otherwise, you'll need to use an external tool to manage the available objects with a program called parkdat.

I go to the object selection screen in the debug dropdown but my new file is not listed as an option to select,it's just not there for some reason.

Did you try restarting the game or making sure the dat isn't the same as another object already in the folder? -

Make sure you have it placed in the right objdata, I know my old comp. had two folders in different locations. Make sure you're looking in the right scenery tab, and for the correct name as under case gets shoved to the bottom. If you didn't copy to all languages the name of the object could be off too. Make sure it's in the folder as just a .DAT file - so not in a folder, etc.
