RCT Discussion / RCT in 2016....

No idea if this fits in general chat or RCT discussion. Since it's about RCT, i thought I'd post it here.

    My RCT year.

2016: rise of populism, Brexit, Donald Trump, man buns and I don’t know what other bullshit. The year has been rough. But I’m not here to talk about my personal experiences about all of these, but about what 2016 has meant to me in terms of RCT. And I invite all of you to join me. What was your best memory? Did you release anything you consider great?

2016 is my second year in the NE-community, and marks some great evolutions in the game, both personally, and technically. OpenRCT made a breakthrough, and there’s a lot of new talent joining thanks to reddit. For me, the year started with work on my autumn park: Keverdal Kingdom. This was my first experience with a more modern bench, as I previously have always been using a personal oldschool one, still handpicked by me and modified for every previous park. This was time consuming and tedious and a big obstacle in actually making something. Keverdal Kingdom was also my first move away from time-line construction. Every other park I made started in the scenario-editor as a forest. My first two parks on NE, Vossendal and La Fôret des Frissons both started out this way, with scenery and foliage already in place before any rides were added. Moving away from this sort of construction would really help me evolve my style and fit it in more with current trends.

During the building of KK I already knew what I wanted to do next. For some reason, I really became obsessed with Alton Towers and wanted to do my own interpretation of it. It had to include a Doctor Who Zone and Wallace & Gromit. Problem was, this was making work on KK more and more tedious as I wanted to move on. The fact that the rapids were causing trouble didn’t really help… Eventually it got sent in, and got a bronze. Nice score, but I’d hoped for more. Never mind, moving on!

Easkerton Towers was great to work on. I felt like I was becoming more part of the community at this point, people asking how I was doing with it, wanting to see screens… It was great. This was also the park that I started using OpenRCT2 with for the first time. After hearing all the good things, I decided to give it a go. Installing it was quite a mess for a computer noob like me, but when I saw the advantages, I was sold. Best evolution of the game to date. So half of ET was built using 8cars, the other half with Open. This park was another learning process for me. It was nearly finished before I let the peeps in, and that was a mistake… They got lost as if it was Evergreen Gardens! And because of the state of Open at that point, they wouldn’t get to the best ride in the park, Melancholica! So it was back to vanilla to make the final changes before I could sent it in… Melancholica really was a special coaster to build. The way merging works on Open really helped! Normally, I suck at layouts but this time I finished it in a matter of minutes. It was a sudden wave of talent, an outburst of creativity. I opened it, stats were fine and it was finished! Supporting took me a small evening and there you go… Despite some minor flaws, people still liked my park and gave it a silver. Damnit! I still wanted more!

After this, I actually had a little dry spell from RCT. I was active, but didn’t know what to do. I was messing around in a bench one day, trying to build an entrance I had envisaged for a long time. I had no clue what to do with it though. But when I remembered a failed concept for a music park in the south of Belgium with giant instruments, it hit me. Piano Park was born. This park didn’t really present me with that many challenges, apart from thinking of themes and how to integrate music into a visual style that I could apply in a theme park. It did present a more community based way of building though. Lagom had done some stuff in Easkerton for me, now he became my regular advisor, along with FredD. FredD also was my coaster specialist for this park, having modified the GCI and built the entire spinning coaster in it. Eventually, it was finished and my goal I had set out in the beginning of 2015 was in the bag: gold at NE.

Next to this stuff I did some other things as well. I had a collab going on with Thirteen, be he has vanished. I hope he comes back to finish it, or gives permission to do it with someone else. I joined Liam’s The New Block and participated in De Concurrenten, his time-line competition. I had a blast with that and hopefully can continue doing that.

In terms of releases, NE has seen a great year. Parks like BGA, FUCK, Liseberg and WoF can still count on regular visits by me, and I’m probably forgetting a lot more. The thread I made about my old collected RCT-Guide screens has stimulated a nostalgic movement, and finally gave me the chance to see the park in game that motivated me into playing RCT realistically all those years ago in 2007/2008: Ruben’s De Dwezelaer. Thank you Dimi for this wonderful gift!

What’s next? Well, I still have a zoo to built! I’m back at where I was in 2015 I guess, when I was building another zoo park! :p But this time, I’ve gained a lot more experience, skill and friends thanks to this amazing community. I have evolved so much in this game the last two years, and it all thanks to NE! If I had only known that being part of a community makes you better that much, I bet I’d have actually joined the RCT-Guide all those years ago… ;)

    Happy 2017!

I had some decent releases this past year, but wish I did more in the Olympics and most recent season.

Open RCT really upped my inspiration and motivation to build, Worlds of Fun is a completely different park as a result, as adding objects and expanding the map completely changed the direction of the park.  The original boundary of the park was just behind the CCI, so basically the entire back half was added as a result.

BiZaRrO is probably the work I'm happiest with, the style and coaster just worked out really well.  If it wasn't so poorly positioned on the map, perhaps I would have expanded it into a full park by this point, as I really did love building in that style.

Still have a ton of reviews to go back and write, parks like Knox Vegas, and Discovery Bay are just begging for a few hundred words from me.

Hope for another productive 2017, though I can make any promises at this point.

It was a productive year for me. Of course I was working on FUCK, but I thought it would only be finished end 2016 or early 2017. But thanks to OpenRCT, building became way more faster than with the vanilla version and it made me finish FUCK way earlier than I expected. I'm quite happy with FUCK, it's the first big solo park I succeeded to finish... ever! I had so much fun building this.

In the summer we had the Olympics. I only participated in one challenge because I'm not a fast builder. My submission was Herne the Hunter, a Nemesis-esque B&M invert in a spooky dark theme with a madhouse near it. I quite liked it to work around a myth, something I want to do more in the future.

Afterwards I became a bit inactive. Tried to start up a waterpark, something I still want to finish but I kinda lost motivation to build on it. In that process I also started a space park but lost all inspiration, that park will end up in the trash bin I guess. But near the end I find inspiration and motivation to work on something new, which I'll hope to finish in the coming months.
