Description
As Cerro Plata and its railroad began to gain notoriety in the region, Brent’s ambitions were derailed. The 1973 oil crisis led to a large decrease in tourism, and the town lost the tail end of the 1973 Season, with barely any visitors the next spring. Desperate, Brent and his team searched for what they could do to save their summer season. One idea stood out - hold a rodeo at the town, and make it a regional event.
Building further on this, a friend of Brent donated some old carnival rides, the local community gathered to provide concessions, and volunteers put in many hours to build everything for the event.
That July 4th, Independence day, people from all over the region came to see the festival celebrating the town. Adding to the festivities, a historic 1870s locomotive that ran on the railway, named “Auburn”, steamed to life once again, hauling a special wild west excursion train. Through the efforts of Brent, the ghost town staff, and the community, the town had been saved. -
