RCT Discussion / RCT is a puzzle I can't solve.

No, no, no, I'm not dead, I'm sure the entire site was worried.

Jokes about my almost-certainly-unnoticed-absence-since-I-hardly-did-anything-here-anyway aside, I come to you with virtual bent knee and virtual hands raised to the virtual RCT god.

This game holds a special place in my heart. I love it to bits, I play it whenever I can steal a bit of time (which is getting more and more infrequent these days *virtual sigh for visual effect*). I lurk on this site quite a bit, I check out all the screenshots, open all the new parks, yadda yadda yadda.

And then I try to build for myself. I tell myself I shouldn't and can't hold myself to NE standards, that I've gotta just start building and that level of perfection will come in time.

I just can't build anything, period.

I've tried completely copying work from this site. I could do it, but I couldn't change it in any way without destroying it.

I've tried just starting from scratch and dabbling. Maybe a decent entrance (undoubtedly you've seen the screenshot for it, horrible resolution and all), but nothing ever comes from it.

Countless great ideas were had, tried, and flopped. I've got a mess of save files, most of them failed projects that barely even got off the ground.

Keystone Glen, which is currently the best park on NE*, was a fluke. That park began as aimless dabbling and somehow I built something that I still consider my best work. I've gotten nowhere close to that level again, and that park was small, poorly designed and severely lacking architecture.

I can't build anything that looks like it could believably be a real structure, nor can I build anything interesting.

Anyway, hyperbole is fun but I've used my month's quota. I just need help getting off the ground, and I need it badly. I don't know where to go next, and so I appeal to you, dear citizen, to somehow tell me how to RCT.

*best park built by me, anyway.

EDIT: Also, why do I suddenly have a flag? And why does it correctly identify me? Creepy.

Patients and practice, also dont limit yourself by what you see or what others think.

Yeah, what g force said. I've noticed more experienced doctors are often better at rct, due to all the patients they've had.

Look at Rivers of Babylon. Build like that. Easy and beautiful.

    I'm with you man.

Here is the key to your woes! Try this contest. It's small, you can even just do a small design. Be determined to complete the project by the deadline. Pushing yourself will be worth it!

If I have no plans/ideas in mind and just want to play around and see what happens then I usually start by building a coaster. It's far less daunting than starting with architecture. How do I decide what coaster? I usually set myself a challenge, e.g. can I incorporate weird elements yet still make a credible layout? Use an underused coaster type? Make a ride from a specific company/time period? When you've got a layout down it will become obvious where to start with landscaping and laying out paths, where buildings should go etc... The way the coaster looks may give you ideas for a theme too.
