Round 2 - The Space Race

    1950-1969

The race for the stars is on — but the battle begins right here on Earth. In Round 2, you'll design a park inspired by the environments that defined the Space Race. Will your guests stroll through mid-century America's futuristic optimism, or step behind the Iron Curtain into the disciplined world of Soviet innovation? Choose your side. Build your vision. Capture the spirit of a world divided — and united — by the dream of space.
    Objectives
    • Your park must be set between the years 1950 and 1969, or themed to that era.

    • Your park must feature a launched roller coaster.

    • Your park must include a reference to the Space Race or Cold War, between the USA and USSR.

    Voting

Before voting, please ensure you have viewed all entries below. The first question asks you to evaluate which park or parks have met the above Objectives the best. The second question asks you to choose the park or parks with the highest Quality. You may vote for multiple parks in each question. The poll will be closed in approximately 72 hours, after which the total vote for each park will calculated and the park with the highest number of votes will be declared the winner of the round, granting its creator(s) entry to the Grand Final.

Race To The Moon InError On May 20th, 1969, in a universe not too dissimilar from our own, Apollo 11 starts to roll out of the Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center. But what's this? A message from Mission Control? The Russians have already landed on the moon? Are you sure? Aww man! Well I guess our job here is done then. Time to wind down operations and turn this place into a fully functional theme park then. Recoup some of the costs at least. Yeah, yeah, let Kubrick know he can stand down too. Builder's notes: I am aware that the time setting for this park would mean that the Vehicle Assembly Building would not have the flag and Bicentennial star painted on the side as they were added in the 70's, but they were too good to leave out. If you can spot the other deliberate historical inaccuracy then you get a bonus point!

Our insider on the scene is on the lookout, and was able to obtain this excerpt of top-secret information: "The [REDACTED] has now reached a high level of development, and it's being successfully used in the operation of [REDACTED]. • Description

It is the turn of the millennium and the USSR is still around. The space race has taken an exciting new turn. To commemorate the early days of the space race, NATO and the USSR are having a race around the far side of the moon and back to Earth to see which side will have control of the moon for the whole of the next century. The race starts at an artificialized landscape in the Gulf of Mexico. The stakes are high. You are on the side of NATO and it is up to you to see how you can adjust the speed of our respective rocket train in order to complete the race without being too slow or going too fast and blowing up the train. Complete this objective for the good of everyone on Earth. We can't expect and don't want the Soviet train to crash. We're counting on you.

The guests will be watching on two stands, one for NATO and one for the Soviets. Potential riders should choose their respective cultural side and be aware of the serious potential risks.

To play: Adjust the increments of the lift hill speed. If you aim too high, the train will crash. Aim too low and the ride will stall or complete the circuit too slowly. The last time you complete the ride will be the last counted race and if you fail, then the Soviets will control the solar system.
