RCT Discussion / What is real?

  • cg?%s's Photo
    Dear Roller Coaster Tycoon community,

Recently, I've been thinking about reality, and, specifically, the human search for "reality" through art.

Momus asks: "Which is more real, real or fake?", and replies: "Fake." This leads to the question: "Which is more fake, real or fake?".

The question that should be asked is: "Which is more real, an artistic representation of reality, or an artistic representation of fantasy?" The answer: "neither."

What is truly real is an artistic representation of nothing.

Paint on a canvas existing purely as paint on a canvas. Music on a compact disc existing purely as music on a compact disc. An amusement park in a game existing purely as an amusement park in a game.

I call this ideal of reality "Dogma 05", to replace the old ideals of "Dogma 95." It, too, will be a movement, and it's pledge will be: "I solemnly swear to forever rip off Mala."

    Sincerely,

    Chauncey Gardner.

    Dear Roller Coaster Tycoon community,

What you read was a statement of purpose. This is a statement of execution.

The rules of the "Dogma 05" movement shall be as follows:

    1. I shall not attempt to construct any park within Roller Coaster Tycoon which attempt to be realistic*.

    2. I shall not attempt to construct any rides within Roller Coaster Tycoon which attempt to be realistic*.

    3. I shall not attempt to construct any structures within Roller Coaster Tycoon which attempt to be realistic*.

    4. I shall not attempt to construct, or use, any other elements which attempt to be realistic*, or enhance the realism* of Roller Coaster Tycoon (such as custom scenery, supports, etc.)

Any work that one builds, or has built, following these basic, and essential, principles should be labelled "Dogma 05."

*The usage of the terms "real", "realistic", "realism", etc., signify the classic ideal of realism, not the ideal presented above.

    Sincerely,

    Chauncey Gardner.

PS: In addition to strict "realism", the Dogma 05 movement frowns equally upon the "semirealistic" and "semifantasy" styles so common to this board.

heh, chauncey, as sad as it is but i'm afraid this is pretty much useless around here.

it makes perfect sense, but i disagree with it completley.

Of course. This was written for people with intelligence.

"As long as the roots are not severed, all is well, and all will be well, in the garden."

It makes perfect sense, but i disagree with it completley.

What would be the point of posting ideas if everyone agreed with them already?

So, we can go back to playing RCT 1 w/out expansion packs and trainers and hacks and such now?

So, we can go back to playing RCT 1 w/out expansion packs and trainers and hacks and such now?

If you'd like, although, I am not sure what that has to do with what I, or anyone else, posted in this topic.

    I understand it completely.

Sounds like an interesting RCT philosophy.

To explain, for those who don't understand:

In reality there are limits, limits which cannot be breached, and which every human understands completely.

In art, and gaming, there are no such limits, but most people don't seem to realise it. They keep inline with the realistic limits they place upon themselves in their day to day life, unless it is absolutely required of them to do otherwise. Surprisingly, they'll even transgress the limits of the art form, or game, so as to better follow the limits of reality.

I propose that people do the opposite.

I call this proposition "Dogma 05", which is a joke title. I'm not sure how many people will get it, though I did reference it's source in the first post.

Are you not limiting the artist's expression by proposing the end of realism within RCT?

I partly disagree with what you're saying. I think that in order to not get stuck within the existing boundaries of the art form in question, you need to take something from outside that medium and force it into the medium in question. Parkmaking started (I think) with people doing recreations of real life parks, which forced them to experiment with RCT and push it beyond the boundaries that existed then, in order to make the recreation as accurate as possible.
As you say; "Surprisingly, they'll even transgress the limits of the art form, or game, so as to better follow the limits of reality." It certainly isn't surprising to me. If they hadn't pushed the limits, they wouldn't have reached their goal, so it's only logical that they would go beyond these limits.
When pushing limits, however, you also set up new limits, and if you get stuck within any limits, your art stagnates and eventually becomes outdated and uninteresting.
I do agree that people should try to go beyond the existing boundaries, but I don't think ignoring reality in order to do so is the right way to go, because you risk to just get stuck within the limits of RCT if you do.
(example of this; I usually draw inspiration from photos and other people's drawings rather than from my own sketches when I'm making a park, because often when I make the sketches I have in mind that it will be for RCT, and I don't draw freely, instead I draw it as it might look in RCT, which doesn't help me push any boundaries)

That's the whole point! To free oneself of the boundries of reality, and get stuck in the boundries of art! To me, this is a much more pure, and "real", means of expressing ones self through art, or, as it may be, RCT.

haha, cg is making fun of me :'(

know what's funny? My computer DIED the other day. And thus, I no longer have the "coaster that weaves around the giant maze" thing anymore. And that makes you, like, one of only three people that actually saw it

Yes, I know, but this topic is officially outdated, and has been replaced by "More Roller Coaster Tycoon theorising", which documents the latest mutation of the ideals expressed here. I'm sure you could build a park keeping those ideals in mind, and retain your style, as could everyone else on this forum.

Actually, this topic should probably be closed, or deleted, or something.
