I use Soulseek and have never had any problems with it or had any dodgy files. You don't have to pay to get decent features and there is just about every style of music you could think of if you look hard enough.
Though is this topic not against some rule that we can't talk about illegal stuff or something stupid? -

Mehh...technically so.
I'm on the fence on music downloading...
But what I don't like is p2p sites....the quality is always questionable, and its not always the version you want, and some files can be infected with viruses, etc. -

azureus(for multiple downloads)
BitTornado(single downloads)
kazaa lite (though to get the correct version, you have to get someone that actually has it - because you can't find the right version on the net - unless someone gives it you)
soulseek
direct connect++
newsgroups in general(better than you'd think)

Ares P2P is the best imo... tons of users/files (not just music), and if the song is messed up, before the download finishes it goes back and batches up the missing pieces/scrathcy sounds with the right parts... it's awesome. -

I'm surprised no one has mentioned WinMx. I've had a lot of success with it, however recently I've noticed a lot more "ghost mp3s" (mp3 file w/o audio). But no viruses or spyware issues to report. Still a solid p2p, despite the ghost mp3s. -

I used to use WinMX, and then all of the sudden I could not get a download to go through at all. Every one of them would fail - either immediately or after a little bit of downloading. I'm using Soulseek at the moment, but I'm not really liking it thusfar.
It'll take some getting used to is all, I suppose.
