Bringing back real photography to the topic ...

This is from a studio shooting I was doing last month. The picture does not show a professional model, but a professional classical singer and the pictures taken during the shooting are supposed to be used on her website and for concert promotion.

gir: What are we looking at in your latest pictures? Technically good photography, however I really do not get what I am looking at.

^ They are actually pictures from on-board the USS North Carolina Battleship, which is a restored WWII-era battleship that sits in Wilmington now and serves a museum of sorts. The first picture is from a communications room, the second I believe is an artillery storage room. It's a pretty cool place, and of course, there are lots of interesting things to take pictures of. :)

Make a series of pictures of it, give it a title and you have something great for your portfolio. :)

At least my guess - something along the lines of museum, weapons, war, factory - was not too bad.

these are probably way over-edited but it's more of experimenting than anything. the fourth is my favorite.

I've never shot in a theatre environment before, and it was as hard as I thought it would be.

    Hi guys,

I wanted to share with everyone my Online Portfolio (specifically theme parks) for general interest. My entire collection of theme park photography can be found on my Flickr Page. Some of you might recognise photos from my Photo trip reports over at Theme Park Review: Florida PTR and Alton Towers PTR

Any enquiries (inc. Prints, etc) please don't hesitate to PM or E-mail me @ gareth_smy@hotmail.com

    Many Thanks,

    Gareth

RCTFAN your themepark photos are excellent, I love the Sheikra shot with the storm clouds in the background.

I was wondering what camera and lenses you are using? I'm looking to buy a digital SLR for my USA travels in the summer and will be taking very similar style photos (themeparks, fireworks, landmarks etc). Do you have any suggestions between £300-£500?

    Thanks for the positive feedback!

    I use a Nikon D90 with an 18-200mm 3.5-5.6 and a 50mm 1.8.

It doesn't matter what camera setup you have but how you use it. I've seen shots taken on systems upwards of £5,000 that are over-shadowed by a compact 10mp camera. However the advantage of an SLR is the sensor.

For you price range I would recommend Something along the lines of a decent second hand Nikon D80 or Canon 400D.

This would be the sort of thing you want:

    Clicky!!!!!

    or

    Clicky!!!!!!

One thing I will say is that if you want to take night-time/fireworks shots and not be restricted to resting on bins, etc then you need to invest in a tripod. If you want in-depth answers to specific things then PM me or there are some great forums with loads of information, especially dpreview

    Hey Gareth,

nice to view your portfolio on a clean site. It adds so much to pictures not having to view them on flickr.
Browsing though your pictures brings back a lot of memories, as I recall seeing most of them here. You certainly developed your own style, which is especially visible in the abstact category for me. I really hope to see more of that kind of photography from you and of your new work. Also good luck with your new profession.

And you are so damn right on the statement regarding the unimportance of equipment. I just held a 30000€ Phase One in my hands and guess what, it does not even take great pictures on its own. ;)

    Hey Magnus,

Thanks for you kind support, Its always going to be a work in progress (i still need to get the domain name/email sorted) but now at least I have something a bit more professional to steer people towards.
I'm surprised myself at how much abstract stuff I have done without even realising it!

I'm jealous that you got to use one although I'm sure I will get my chance at some point. I've just started using their software, capture one, as an alternative to Adobe RAW......something else to put on the C.V lol.

    Hope you well,

    Gareth.

Giro d'Italia through my hometown. I'm not interested in this sport, but it's no effort to visit an event this big if it's only 200 m from my house...

But I suck at sport photography. I am too slow, they are too fast, my spot sucked, there were cars blocking the view and I was unprepared. :p
