General Chat / Any ideas on how to get rid of the bots?

  • Corkscrewed%s's Photo
We already have the scrambled code thingy you have to put in when you register (when you copy in the warped looking text in the box), but they seem to get getting past that.

    Any other ideas? :(

Require email address verification... I'm not sure if we already do though.

Exactly what i was gonna say lol.

I just enabled user email validation...
  • Corkscrewed%s's Photo
Cool. And for that matter, didn't we used to have to approve members? Somehow, that's become automatic since we switched to the new forums. That might help cut down on them, since most of the bots have had pretty obvious names.

I would think that would drastically cut down on their registrations. Is there any way to do both e-mail verification and approvals?
  • zach%s's Photo
Email verification is in effect. Approvals (although we used to do them) seem to laborous.

'k. we'll try this for now, and hopefully it'll work. thanks Zach!

just delete the topics when the bot makes it. didn't someone say that they frequent sites where they get more replies? if we just don't reply, they'll stop, theoretically.

Theoretically of corse, But in real life, It does not work, The bot will just make topics, bump their topics and spam other topics no matter what you do.

    The computer isn't real life.

Holy shit, I think Lazorz just actually said something witty and insightful for a change. Bravo! And, back on topic, I think email validation should do the trick, but if it doesn't you may want to ask SFF from WWS, he is very experienced with computers and I am 99% sure he'd know of a simpler way to eliminate these annoying bots.
