My roommate and I are having a disagreement regarding the end of Star Wars episode 6. Frankly, I can't tell if she actually believes her viewpoint or is still insisting on it to avoid admitting she is wrong.
Anyway, what is the cause of Vader's death? He is extremely weakened from the final scene and chooses to take off his mask to see his son before he dies.
Is it because:
A) He was killed by the emperor, who damages Vader with the lightning as Vader carries and throws him over the ledge. This weakens him to the point of death.
orHe was killed by Luke, who weakens him to the point of death with a lightsaber wound, specifically cutting his wrist off.
Below is the youtube link.

Thanks for participating, I'm at least curious to know if I've been misinterpreting this for all these years, and otherwise I win the bet. -

A
Vader was weaked by that lightsaber wound but as shown by Luke, that's not enough to kill...
It was definitely the lighting...

I always thought he dies because the vader mask is what allows him to breathe. He can't breathe properly without the mask. -

Definitely A, and ^ didn't help his recovery. IIRC, his limbs are mostly robotic, so the lightsaber wound probably didn't matter much. -

I've never watched it in it's entireity either... I've seen the whole film lol just not in one go lol. -

I think the lightning not only damaged him as it would a "normal" jedi (one without the life support suit), but it also damaged Vaders life support suit as well, making it unlikely he could have survived long enough to make it to someplace where they could have repaired it.
EDIT:
In other words, a Jedi without a life support suit might have survived, or at least survived long enough to get to a Bacta Tank -

You need to get out more. Even if your not a fan, it's such a pop culture icon that everyone in the world age 10+ should have seen it at least once.wouldn't know, haven't seen it.
I definitely agree with A. B isn't logical because Luke cut off the hand of Vader's robotic arm (the one he got after his fight with Count Dooku). So it wouldn't matter if he lost the whole thing; it wouldn't kill him or weaken him. So yeah, definitely the Emperor. -

I love Star Wars!!!!
"What was the cause of Vader being weakened to the point of death?"
"The Emporer killed / weakened him with lightning" ---- is correct. heheheh

honestly.. this is the answer. I think he was 'dying' before that, but what really killed him was him taking the mask off. More from memory though, I only watched a part of the ending. -

I think it's a combination of both the missing hand and the shocks. He was obviously weakend after the hand was lopped off, then he was shocked by the emporer. Before luke took his helmet off, luke said, "but you'll die". Vader says "nothing can stop that now". So, he was on his deathbed before taking off the helmet.
And, how the heck does luke know that vader can't live without his helmet? In empire, vader takes his helmet off, at least the top part.
