How do you change it?

I believe you are talking about the title under your name, it isn't so much a status - even though your title seems like it is. You can't change it, it is based on how many posts you have. There are also custom titles, the admins can change it to whatever they want.

the current default set makes no sense and should be discarded.

I thought the whole idea was for the 'titles' to not make any sense.

I still hate mine, and always have and always will, but no matter how many times I've complained about it in topics like this over the years asking for my Defender of the Faith title back.. Well. They just ignore me everytime

I guess only *respected* members can really get a customized one. Mine is just my old name because I killed off the underscore a while ago, but I think it would be fucking awesome if it said, "Ist Krieg."
