VIXIVI - Sweet Kiss & Faraway Dreams

A rather obscure "demo" (according to the Metal Archives it's a demo, but it's over an hour long) of Christian Symphonic Black Metal artist VIXIVI, composed of one guy, Andrez Hansen, aka Zestigma, also in Bleedience and Inevitable End.

It's very experimental, and literally musical ectacy.

Track list (with times courtesy of Metal Archives):
    1. Sorrow 04:58
    2. Skygge 01:56
    3. You Are 02:37
    4. For Evig 04:55
    5. Suffer 01:36
    6. Haunt 00:30
    7. Take Me 03:29
    8. Creation 03:30
    9. Silence 01:02
    10. Through The Landscape Of Death 04:29
    11. Perfect Version Of Man 02:14
    12. Open Your Heart 03:47
    13. Frozen Spirit 03:35
    14. Renew Me 03:39
    15. Sweet Kiss, And Far Away Dreams 02:53
    16. Infest 01:05
    17. Nar Morket Kommer 07:33
    18. This Endless Pain 03:21
    19. Come You Spirits 03:14
    20. Recieve 02:51
    Total playing time 01:03:14

It's the only black metal album to crack my top 10, or even top 30 probably, it's pretty much death metal from #2 down, but it is SUCH A FUCKING GREAT ALBUM.

No one else I show it too seems to like it though.

Here's a download link from Metalarea (great website), you have to register to download stuff though (it's worth it). http://metalarea.org...t...5&hl=VIXIVI

Not sure what my 'favorite' album is. Far too many could hold that position and my favoritism towards or against them drifts depending on which ones I'm listening to at any given time.

But I can say that the most important album to me is OK Computer by Radiohead:

    1- Airbag
    2- Paranoid Android
    3- Subterranean Homesick Alien
4- Exit Music (for a film)
    5- Let Down
    6- Karma Polic
    7- Fitter Happier
    8- Electioneering
    9- Climbing Up the Walls
    10- No Surprises
    11- Lucky
    12- The Tourist

Opened up so many doors for me both as a beginning musician and as someone who was stuck in my "classic rock phase" for a couple years (those couple years that just about anyone who truly loves music goes through when you're convinced that nothing worth listening to is coming out today, because nothing 'new' getting played on the radio is worth a shit). This album was the first one I bought not because of the radio, but instead because of the internet... It's symbolic of a change in the way I searched for 'new' music and my beliefs about radio and modern music.

The next most important albums would probably be either Dark Side of the Moon or Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd as those formed how I listened to music. The way I dive into the melodies and try to pick apart which instruments are where in the mix and what exactly is going on; not just enjoying the textures and sounds but exploring them and questioning how they were created. I guess it's not surprising that I picked up guitar after listening to Floyd for about a year... I actually wanted to go for bass because I knew a few solid guitarists, but one day my day came home with a cheap, used Harmony guitar he'd bought from a coworker for $12 and that's how it all began.

    TRACK-BY-TRACK REVIEW!

    New Born:
"chilling piano introduction" i read somewhere, i could see where they were coming from. sounds very much like an ice cream truck. anyone could see how they chose this to open the album, the "chilling" piano arpeggios leads staight into an epic fuzzed-up guitar riff, soon to be joined by the bass imitating the guitar part. twenty-four bars later, we are still alive and we are welcomed by an awesome bass riff, with a sharp guitar partial chord overlay. Fit. when we reach the chorus, same basic layout as the epic guitar riff, except obviously with some brillaint singing over the top. next we have a little guitar solo, with the arpegios picked out on guitar with the technique i use all the time but have forgotten the name of ^_^ back into the verse, then another chorus, then were back home with the guitar riff.
one of the reasons i love this album is that they changed alot of the musical rules here. the riff is repeated 3 times, wouldnt be so wierd in 3/4, but it is in 4/4. shnazzy. ill try not to get too musically technical here.

    Bliss:
some serious arpegiator action here. starts off nice and quiet... almost lulled into a false sense of security with the gentle, tranquil piano arpegios, until... WHAM! the guitar/synthesiser/bass/drums hit you. to try and explain the chord structure i love here:
    1-2-3-1-2-3-1-1
dont see that all to often. usualy some staight 1-2-3-4 or something to that description. next we are in the chorus, nice and in your face, an almost desperate tone to his voice as he asks for "all the peace, and joy in your mind" i love the way muse put everything into their music. this song is so epic. next we are back into the verse with the bridge-pickup-selected chord riff, abck into the chorus, then we have a breif quite section, a single line repeated from the verse, then we are thrown back into the chorus. even before i saw the official video for this song, i had the feeling of falling when listening to this track, well maybe not so much falling, but moving extremely fast. then a calm outro with the piano arpegios from the start.

    Space Dementia

it isnt hard to spot the blatent rachmaninov influence here. a chilling pedal-sustained section, giving the imediate impression of space. then we are thrown into a hammering piano verse following an ascending scale. bellamy almost screams into the microphone on this song. ALOT of fun to sing alone :p already this song is so freaking awesome. then we reach the chorus, more synthesised than the verse, following a 3 note looping arpeggio. from the line "... and, tear us apart.." it is an exact clone of one of rachmaninovs peices.
then we are back into the verse. same hammering chords. tooo-ooo sweet.
chorus again, but instead of the verse, we are lead into an extention of the chorus, which is "ooh"ed and "ahh"ed over, untill we reach the epic finale of this number, a chaotic guitar outro.
no doubt one of my favourite songs ever.

    Hyper Music

another track where we can clearly see the inspiration. this songs riff is very simelar to the rage agains the hachine song... ive forgoten its name now... never mind. its very simelar to a rage agains the machine song, but unique enough to set it apart. we start with a very atmospheric intro, with noises like a pick being scraped along a string slowly, and more quick scratching as we gear up for the riff.
this is a brilliant song. just the right tempo to jump along whilst playing it.
as we get past the freaking brilliant riff, we are lead into a tasty bass line traveling up an ascending scale, then back to the begining. over this we have very simple 3 note guitar chords. then we hear the opening guitar riff again, then its into the choru. the same riff as the second part of the intro, but this time with words on top :) sweet. we hear the verse again, then the chorus once more, then its a great outro, following the same structure as the chorus but with more bellamy plaing around on guitar :D

    Plug In Baby

this song almost needs no introduction.
this very distinctive riff moving in triads through the harmonic minor scale, the ostinato is quite simelar to bachs "toccatta and fugue". listen to it and youll understand :p nothing else really to explain. its in 4/4. the verse is 8 bars long. there is a 2 bar lead up to the chorus, 16 bar chorus. 8 bar riff, 8 bar chorus. yeah this is getting boring for you guys :p okay, this song is supposed to be about geneticaly modifying puppies so they live forever. pleasant :p
this song is becoming a signature of mine at band practice. :p
ive you wan to hear an okay rendition of this track, head over to oor Myspace its worth a listen.

Ill do the rest later in an Edit.

wow this is an insanely hard question for me, being that all i do is constantly listen to music 24/7, and always check out new bands lol.

but some of the most influential albums to me that i can think of atm are (in no particulat order):
    -'The Tide' by Oceana
    -'Relativity' by Emarosa
-'On Letting Go' by Circa Survive (pure amazingness btw.)
-'When I hit the Ground' by Ace Enders
-'What I have to give, let it be given' by After the Sirens
-'Come now sleep' by As Cities Burn
-'Alls well that ends well' by Chiodos
    -'Viva La Vida' by Coldplay
    -'X&Y' by Coldplay
-'For Those who have heart' by A Day to Remember (!!!)
-'Homesick' by A Day to Remember (!!!!!!!)
-'Plagues' by The Devil Wears Prada
    -'3D' by I See Stars
    -'1985' by In:Aviate (AMAZING)
    -'Moths' by Lower Definition
    -'Illuminate' by Lydia (simply beautiful)
-'The Red Tree' by Moneen (so amazingly deep and heartfelt music and lyrics)
-'As if everything was held in place' by Of Machines
-'TRANSLATING THE NAME EP' by SAOSIN !!!!
-'Safety in the Sea' by Sever Your Ties
-'Louder Now' by Taking Back Sunday
-'Self Titled' by Vision and Valor
    -'Composure' by Waking Ashland
-'Dreams' by We Came as Romans
-'The Awakening' by Underneath the Gun

and probably the most amazing and important album to me of all time has to be:

-'They're Only Chasing Safety' by Underoath.

the emotion packed into this album, combined with the insanely catchy hooks, and layers of guitars caused me to fall in love with it immediately. this is the album that got me into music, and i still listen to it frequently.

but yeah, all of those albums i just listed are amazing, and i listen to most of them on a regular basis:]
i highly recommend any of those albums to everyone.
