General Chat / Wisdom Teeth

I could've sworn that there was a topic already started for this, and I looked through 5 pages of topics to find it, but couldn't. Oh well.

I got one taken out yesterday morning. Yes, I said one. Only one.

So they stick me with novacaine, which I always hate, and then things are fine. I'm listening to the music they gave me, and they're just cutting away at tissue. I could've taken a nap were it not for the fact that they had their hands in my mouth. Then they started pulling on the tooth (upper left) and I started to feel a bit of discomfort. Nothing too painful, so I just went with the flow. They tried and they tried, but could not get the tooth out. So they decided to take an x-ray. And then they brought in "the" dentist. El presidente of teeth. Even she couldn't get it out. And by now, the novacaine is starting to wear off. So they start drilling around and cutting my gums and stretching my cheek to its limit. And everytime they pull on the tooth, pain shoots up my jaw and into my temple.

Two and a half hours later, I'm missing a single wisdom tooth, and my left cheek is swollen beyond belief. As it turns out, the tooth was twice as developed as it should've been for someone of my age (18), and it had reached a point where it was just as connected to my jaw as any of my other teeth. This lead to the decision that I see an oral surgeon in a month to have the other three removed while under anesthesia.

For the past 24+ hours I've been doped up on pain pills, and I've only recently been able to lower the dosage enough to stay conscious.

What a fun two days this has been!

    Nice...

I had all 4 removed when I was your age. My dentist knew what he was doing, so they sent me to a surgeon to begin with. All 4 teeth were impacted, so they drilled them into dust while I was knocked out. I asked if I could keep one, but they said they drill them into dust and suck them up with the suction.

A friend of mine got to keep one of his, talk about cool! I would have drilled a hole in it and strung it on a necklace. Talk about an awesome way to impress dates!

I find it funny that your dentist was surprised by the fact that your tooth was worse than they expected. Do you have x-ray machines where you live?

Hope you get to feeling better!

    http://forums.nedesi...showtopic=17285 it was pg 7.

Sucks that you were awake, I was knocked out when they took out my first and then same thing for the next 3. Must have been hell being awake...

They don't have to pull mine because they already pulled like 4 teeth for the braces. Which is kind of cool, because those were the canine and they were easy to get out.

@Guy Smiley: They had taken an x-ray when they took my braces off and had sent the results to the dentist for review because the ortho had noted that it may be time to remove the wisdom teeth. The dentist then recommended that they to a two-part procedure: left side first, then right side a month later. This would allow me the ability to eat and drink after each procedure.

But it didn't exactly happen the way they had hoped. And now I'm on a diet of soup, pudding, and ice-cream. :p

    Thanks for the support guys!

Where are your wisdom teeth actually located?

I hate all type of dentists, even a check up scares me, i hate pain. When you get them romoved do they put you out if your like desperate for it? Or is it only svere cases?

Will they have to take them out if you have a big mouth? I can put my whole ist in my mouth pretty far back and my hands medium sized. Or do they take them our of anyone?

    Im petrified now

Yeah I had all four taken out at once and I had to go to hospital to be knocked out. The only annoyance was the aching afterwards would prevent you from sleeping and you could only eat liquids for a few days :(

I'm naturally missing teeth (as in they didn't form, not that they fell out), and fortunately I'm missing three wisdom teeth. And four molars.

Your wisdom teeth would be located behind your very back molars. They should be covered with gum tissue, so you don't normally even know they are there. They are visible in x-rays.

Had mine cut out when I was 15 or so and had to go to an oral surgeon to get it done. I just remember waking up and leaving the office sort of confused. Also I was pretty nauseous for a couple of days, as pain pills don't sit well with me.

i have good teeth, as my father didnt look after his at an early age so payed the price, so he forced us to be little teeth nerds. :D

vering slightly off the topic of teeth,
what gir said about not coping well with painkillers,

ibuprofen make me seriously ill, like cant sit up for fear of vomiting everywhere,
so i had to have less than half my amount of painkillers, in the form of paracetamol. when i broke my collar bone. and you cant get any kind of cast on your shoulder, for some reason. so im on half my painkillers, i go to sleep with these two fucking sharp edges of bone sliding around inside me, and i wake up, horrified to find my arms hehind my head, in a kind of relaxed way, it was agony getting it back to my side, and of course, as luck would have it, i had my year nine SAT tests this day, and had them al week.
they offered to postpone mine but i thought screw it ill go into school with my clavical sliding aboot and do my maths SAT (i like math)
and it was either agony at home, with nothing to do, or agony at school, with lovely maths to concentrait on, (i had a scribe for all my exams :D)
    so i chose school.
    fun times.
about 3 months after that, i broke it again.
and i was uber paranoid for about 3 months after that.

    im a normal kid now.
    sorry for the off topicness.
i suppose it tied in with painkillers, at least.

Just about everyone's wisdom teeth have to come out at some point or another. Usually in your teens or early adulthood. They're like an apendix. You don't need them, but when they start to cause problems, or if problems might arise in the future, they have to come out. Two of my wisdom teeth are actually sitting at awkward angles, so that's what prompted the ortho to consult the dentist.

The procedure depends on the dentist. My dentist assumed that a local anesthetic and some pulling would get the job done. Other dentists prefer to break the tooth into pieces and pull it out that way. Some dentists even recommend that you see an oral surgeon and have them removed while under anesthesia.

No matter what procedure your dentist recommends, the results will always be the same: Mild to severe pain in the location where the tooth was removed. For this they will prescribe you pain medication. They will probably prescribe you an antibiotic as well, to aid in the healing process. You'll be asked to replace your gauze at periodic intervals until the bleeding stops, and around 24 hours after the procedure you can begin rinsing with a warm saltwater solution.

Your diet will be minimal in the first 24 hours. Believe me, you'll be in too much pain to want to eat anything, or you'll be asleep. If you do manage to eat something, eat pudding. You don't have to chew it, it tastes great, and most importantly, you can fit it in your mouth. (I still can't open my mouth very far, so I'm stuck on a soup diet.)

Other than that, it really isn't all that bad. Once the pain starts to subside, you'll be up running again. I took one pain pill this morning and I haven't needed one since.

Got knocked out and got all 4 removed when I was 17. I was eating solid foods by the end of the day and didn't need the pain killers. I was playing my trumpet by the end of the week.

It's not that bad if your dentist isn't retarded.
