General Chat / Scared of coasters?

  • Wanted%s's Photo
I am just wondering if any of you coaster enthusiasts are afraid of any parts of a roller coaster. Personally lift hills terrify me, but that sense of fear makes the roller coaster just that much better.

I think I would call that feeling in my stomach during a big drop fear, but that's why I ride the coaster!

I'm not scared of any part of a coaster, but when they pull you back on a RipCord like ride, that scares me.

unfortunately i have lost any of this feeling. the only thing that can get me worried is when a ride doesn't appear to be safe. and when it's the moment that i'm riding when i first notice ...

the only part of a coaster that's ever scared me is on Superman (now Bizarro) at SFNE, on the lift. i have to ride on the right side because if i ride on the left, there's no catwalk and the Connecticut River is almost right below it. it just freaks me out.

A thing that got me going was the cable lift on Millennium Force. I sat of the left side seat so when you go up the lift there isn't any catwalk next to you. The lift is tall, fast, and steep, so it was a lot of fun to look over the edge at the lake.

When I was young, but still tall enough to ride, my family and friends took a trip to BGW and all I had the courage to ride was Big Bad Wolf and Wild Maus. For whatever reason, Nessie, Alpengeist, and probably especially Apollo's Chariot seemed very intimidating. I didn't ride a looping coaster until we went to IOA and rode Incredible Hulk, and I think that pretty much stripped away all my fears, haha. I'm still pretty terrified of Tower of Terror, but I have to say that I love it and wouldn't trade anything for the feeling!

I know how you feel man.. the wild mouse at luna park sydney tipped over way too far at one point my gfwas lucky to be alive. We told the tech for the ride and he just plain ignored us

And i've refuse to go on the coaster at the Sydney easter show every year cos its fro 19962 an looks like it'll fall apart once i step on it, even the queue line collapses soetimes lol

I generally am not afraid of coasters, but what scares me is the lift hill too, especially when it is a hypercoaster, when I was younger, I closed my eyes on the lift, but I don't scream and just enjoy the ride.

    JDP does not fear anything.

...and if something does go wrong, it just makes it that much more exciting.

Rollercoasters don't scare me much at all, it's the drop towers that get to me. I'll still ride them, but when I'm sitting there at the top, I get second thoughts.

nin, are you kidding me? That's the best part! That's when the adrenaline really starts flowing. I live for that feeling!

Funny thing is, it was the Supreme Scream at KBF that turned me into an adrenaline junkie. It my last ride of the day. My dad rode the Boomerang, and I wouldn't get close to it. My dad wanted to ride Ghost Rider, and I said no. The only coaster I had the nerve to ride was Jaguar. But the freefall on Supreme Scream (which I was bribed to ride) was such an amazing feeling. To this day, I punch myself in the gut for being afraid of the coasters there. I would give anything to go back in time to that very day, and ride all the coasters there.

But to get back on the subject, nothing scares me now. The closest I've come to fear was on my recent ride on the Beast at KI. After the second lift hill, you come onto a shallow slope into a 540 degree helix. You start off slow, but as you begin to pick up speed, the car begins to rattle. And your not going fast enough to not notice it either. You haven't been consumed by the joy of speed, so you're still aware of your suroundings. I felt a little nervous, because I didn't think that the car was supposed to shake as bad as it did, especially for how slow it was going. Incredible ride, though. A must for any KI visit.

sitting in the coaster seat and just before you hit the loop you hear this snap you look down and see your seat belt is no longer connected.

^Well now, who's fault is that?

never got an answer about that, i sure didnt hit the release button on it, im not that crazy. besides the ride operators go through and check the belts before they let the coaster leave the station.

    ^ Funny story:

So I'm at KI, riding the Beast, and my friend Jay is sitting next to me. We get buckled in, and we're waiting for the ride-ops to come around and check us. Now, the ride-ops at KI are really fun. They ask you how your ride was, and they give you live commentary. (At least the ones I had did.) Much better than Holiday World. However, they are terrible at checking your restraints. (I could care less, though. If I die on a coaster, at least I died doing something I love.) A ride-op comes by, grabs my lap bar and gives it a tug. Then the ride-op on the other side comes by to check my Jay's lap-bar, and doesn't even touch it. It looks like he touches it, but he doesn't. The conversation that follows goes something like this:

Me: Did he even touch the lap-bar?
    Jay: No.
    Me: I didn't think so.
Jay: Hey, if I get hurt, I can sue.
Me: I don't think you'd have a very good case.
[The train begins to roll out of the station.]
    Jay: Why not?
Me: I don't know if you'd be able to tell on the security cams.
Jay: You'd be my witness, right?
    Me: True.

[We ride the Beast and enjoy ourselves.]

    Me: You didn't fall out.
    Jay: Damn.

I actually think little kids are braver than most people, because they don't scream and hardly know whats going on. Well, I am afraid of heighs but surprisingly, my favorite type of coasters (right after wooden twisters) are hypercoasters.

The best example of little kids having less fear than adults is SKI RESORTS!

Watch little kids on skis! They just go straight down the mountain and crash.
