I found that doing something distracting or simply something you enjoy is a good way to take your mind off your troubles. If you have any hobbies (playing an instrument is a good start) or things you like doing, try that. Either that or do some work around the house that requires a lot of your focus. If nothing else there's nothing like spending the night with a few friends to brighten your day. -

+1 to Star gazing! I love doing that.
Other suggestions, listening to upbeat music (no emo shit), playing a sport that you may like, go out for a drive, if all else fails.....masturbate? -

Anything enjoyable in large doses.
I'm really into music, so if I'm in a depressed mood, I'll listen to depressing music for hours and days on end. If I'm in a good mood I'll listen to upbeat music. So basically you need to do things that reflect the mood you're in.
But I really buy into Gwazi's suggestion. Flirting with cute girls is always a great pick me up. -

Finding new music really cheers me up. If im feeling down a good scour of the net for new tracks always cheers me up. but that might just be me -

exercise. A short burst of cardio boosts all of the body's systems and even if you are tired immediately afterward you'll be much happier and more energetic throughout the day. Bonus points for some social activity along with it, be it competetive sports or just hitting balls around for half an hour on a tennis court with friends. -

If you've been spending a lot of time around people, spend some by yourself. (Not necessarily alone, but not as part of a group.) Or, if you've been spending a lot of time alone, go out and spend some time with a group of people you're comfortable with.
(If you're an introvert like me, these cause most bouts of depression.)
Other suggestions: eat raw vegetables or fruit (citrus especially), cut alcohol and caffeine consumption, exercise. (All of these are chemical solutions to the problem.)

Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best...
And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...
If life seems jolly rotten
There's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps
Don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing.
And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...
For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.
So always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath
Life's a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true.
You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.
And always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the right side of life...
(Come on guys, cheer up!)
etc. etc.
-enjoy!
