General Chat / sleazy/depressing movies with sad endings

Hello I hope you enjoyed the Super Bowl.

That aside, I recently watched the movie Ricochet (1991) with Denzel and John Lithgow. I thought it was very good, but then, my standards for movies in genres I don't hate are incredibly low.

The end pissed me off however, it was so happy. I hate happy endings in general, but in a movie like this it is unforgiveable.

Spoilers deal with it

The movie tries to be sleazy, with unsympathethic characters (Aryan Brotherhood members, Aryan Brotherhood bookshop owners with picutres of Hitler and the Klan on the walls, drug dealers, hookers, and the like), and anyways, Denzel plays a cop who arrests a hitman played by John Lithgow, and as such Denzel gets promoted over the next eight years to assistant DA, and Lithgow is stuck in jail for eight years, wanting revenge. Anyways, Lithgow escapes, fakes his own death, and then goes about an elaborate scheme to humiliate Denzel, gets him accused of murder, and whatnot. Alas, Denzel triumphs in the end and folks are happy.

First of all, are there any alternate endings to this movie? Honestly, if I could change the last 15 minutes, it'd be my favorite movie of 1991. Well, I guess except SOTL.

But are there any movies exactly like this but with a more depressing ending thanks?


And on a related but not identical note, what's the sleaziest movie you've ever seen? I'm not looking for scary, or even gory, or porn, I'm looking for movies with unlikeable charactesr, and genearl filth. (side note If they're about detectives then so much the beter)

Reservoir Dogs?

Requiem For A Dream is a pretty dark movie with a dark ending. It's about this guy in Coney Island whose life is destroyed by heroin addiction and his mom's life destroyed by meth. The ending definitely leaves a lasting, almost shockingly intense feeling that is far from pleasant.
