General Chat / "Out From Out Where" Review

I just got this album yesterday, and I don't know if anyone else had it, I thought it was pretty nice. It's a techno album, but more halfway towards electronica and ambience. Amon Tomin is Brazilian, and the album was printed under the label of "Ninja Tunes". It might not be the most anticipated, but it's still new and fresh, so I'm gonna give it a nice review.

Back From Space - This is a good song, with a huge array of element going into the song. If all that background stuff isn't sampled, than this guy is a God. It's amazing how much he could fit into the background of the song, while keeping elements going in and out of the foreground so quickly. It's not my favorite, but it's so crazy that I'm gonna give him a *8.5/10*.

Verbal feat. MC Decimal R. - This is most definitely my favorite song on the album. Although I have different tastes than most, I think it's the best. I like it quite a bit, because of the good sampling, the cut up voices, and the interesting sound to it. Nice bass, it has. I'm gonna say *9/10*

Chronic Tronic - Lots of bass, lots of deep sound, lots of sampling. That's this song completely. The non-sampling elements are great, and the song is so layered it's not even funny. I hear a foreground, a background, a middle ground, and a "no-man's land" where even more stuff is thrown in. Even in the quiet parts, it's got three layers to it. Just amazing. *8.5/10*

Searchers - Well, it's okay. It's not that great. The starting of the song is definitely not that great. I don't really like the guitar in the background. The middle ground elements are okay (the stuff that sounds like actual techno, instead of this bongo drums stuff with a bass guitar going on and violin going pizzicato (sp?) along with the syncopated cello). It's piece of music that definitely took some talent, but I just don't like it all that much. *7/10*

Hey Blondie - I don't like this too much. I'd say it's definitely not very good. It has a very repetitive sound to it, something I was hoping to avoid while listening to the album. But, no. I couldn't. It's just too repetitive to me. I really don't enjoy it too much, so this lands it a *6.5/10*

Rosies - I like this one a lot more than the last one. It starts off as a song that just sounds kind of happy, but then quickly moves into a darker, deeper, more filled with bass part. It's got a great thing to it. It sounds a little (not a whole lot) like "Hey Blondie", but it's just better. A very interesting sample is thrown in there too. So where do you want to go? Rosies, OK. That's cool. *8/10*

Cosmo Retro Intro Outro - Cool. Very cool sound. I like this one a lot. The elements are perfect, the sampling is great, the editing is great, the chosen samples are great, and the tempo perfectly reflects everything the song has in it. It has a great mix of treble, bass, midrange, everything. The bass isn't overloaded like a lot of songs are now, and has the most amazing sound to it. It's just perfect. Cosmo Retro Intro Outro comes from the in from the retro cosmos, and goes out with a *9/10*

Triple Science - Umm... odd. Reminds me a lot of The Orb. Dunno if anyone likes them either. But, it's dripping with an electronic background that is the foreground of the song, too. The background and the foreground go in and out with each other. The song just sounds like this million mile an hour blur going by, but if you listen, you can see how well organized the song actually is. And the vocal sample in it just finishes the song off. This song gets a nice, juicy *9/10*

El Wraith - Not for me. My mentality here goes with "Hey Blondie". Too repetitive, too boring. That's really all I need to say. Umm... so, here. *6.5/10*

Proper Hoodidge - Woah. Very towards the ambience style of the album. It's not that great, but then I see that it has like, 5 different repetitive parts of it. There's the background sample, and then all the samples change, and get a totally different tone. The elements sound boring, but then you get to the part that sounds really bubbly and bouncy (repetitive section 2) and everything changes. It gets pretty good after that. So, I'll give this song a *8.5/10*

Mighty Micro People - The final song. Yeah. Okay, but definitely not as good as some of the others (Verbal, Cosmo Retro Intro Outro, Triple Science, etc.). I wouldn't go as far as to call it bad, but it's a bit repetitive, and get's kind of boring. But, it's slow, so you don't really get bored of it, and a new element is added or taken away every once and a while. Even so, it's not that great. I'll just say *7/10*

    Overall --- *87.5/110* or *80%*

All in all, I would say this one is worth buying. It has a couple of not so great songs, but there are enough really good ones that I will still say that I like it. Go buy, or spend yourself a little time on Kazaa if you're that cheap.

    It's Amon Tobin...

Ah ha. I probably should have looked at that unusual text a little bit closer, then.

Great album, indeed. Although I prefer Supermodified, as it is a nice midway point between the almost Industrial metallic sound of Out From Out Where, and his earlier, more organic and jazzy sound.

But, he hasn't produced a truly bad album yet (although his earlier stuff comes close, imo).

Also, everything on his albums are sampled. Although he uses dozens upon dozens of samples in some places. He's a master at getting tons of different sounds to work as one.
