General Chat / Noir Flic of the Week

Hello NE folks, thought I'd institute a new feature here in basic chat. Being a film fan in general and an especially big fan of film noir I thought I'd take a little time out to share some of the great movies I've been watching with you. This one's a definate sleeper but well worth it if you can find a copy.

An Ace in the Hole (1951)
    also titled The Big Carnival

Directed by one of the all-time greats Billy Wilder this movie is about a disillusioned newspaper man (Kirk Douglas) who comes to New Mexico after being fired from newspapers in Boston, Chicago, New York. Yeah you get the idea, he's a little rough around the edges. A story breaks which he's determined to ride straight back to the top. I give this movie 3 out of 4 stars. It's a little heavy handed with it's message at times (Kirk Douglas and subtlety do not go hand in hand) but it's worth seeing just for the dialogue alone.

"I've met some hard boiled eggs in my time, but you - you're 20 minutes!"

"I've lied to men who wear belts, I've lied to men who wear suspenders but I'd never be so stupid as to lie to a man who wears both belt and suspenders!"

    Classic stuff folks. Highly recommended.
