Ask the Experts / Vertical track split

  • heartlinecoaster%s's Photo

    Hi All,

Thought I'd finally nailed track splitting with forwards and backwards sections in ORCT2, but I'm struggling to make it work on my latest creation.

The effect i'm going for is a slow vertical lift that cuts short into a backwards vertical freefall. My current split/merge point is made by 1 piece of vertical going to steep and then back to vertical. I don't particularly mind having this weird kink in the lift as long as the transition from forwards to backwards is in the vertical position.

This didn't work. It always stays in the forward section bouncing on the end of the chain. Even with a fast chain that clearly propels it beyond the split point, it won't do the backwards section.

Is there a way of making this work?

    Thanks in advance.

Hey, do you have a screen of your setup? It's a bit too confusing to go off your text.

Only in test phase at the moment, so here's the basic idea:

    Lift section in black.

Did you build the black track section last?

So there are a few things you need to do:

    1. Remove the chain lift completely

    2. Set the operating mode to "Freefall Drop Mode", which can be done by enabling "Show all operating modes" in the cheats menu.

    3. Unfortunately, with your current setup, the black "lift" track doesn't actually line up with the cyan vertical spine piece.  So you'll either have to re-arrange your lift, or just do a setup like this:

Notice how the lift and drop is all lined up here.  You can change it like I said, but it must actually merge correctly.

    4. Because the drop actually goes lower than the bottom of the lift, you'll need to make sure that the track is merged in the correct order, so that that train actually follows the path you want.  This can be done by changing the order of the elements in tile inspector.  Or building them in the order that allows for the correct path to be taken, however I am unsure if this is possible.

Here are the elements you need to re-order in tile inspector:

Making sure that the vertical track piece is on top of the vertical to steep slope piece we've used for the lift.

    5.  Make sure that the track on the forward to reverse section on the left side of the screenshot is also ordered correctly, which can be done just by building them in the right order.

Note: If the entire train doesn't travel onto the reverse track section at once, the train will actually split.  This can be fixed by increasing the speed of the train slightly, so the entire thing crosses over and possibly lengthening the runoff track if needed.

Here is the file in case you want to see it in game:

Let me know if you have any questions.

    I did.

Thanks for the example G Force, unfortunately freefall mode isn't quite what I was after. I'm trying to get the lift in the forwards direction and the drop being backwards.

On opening yours, it was dropping back into the station, so I followed the tile inspector bit to make yours work again. Following the same logic on my own with the piece ordering hasn't helped though.

Hmm, I'm actually not sure that is possible without creating a new ride type... At least as far as I know. Maybe there is some higher level shoestring you can do to reverse the trains manually. But that is beyond my knowledge.

The tile inspector trick should work so long as the circuit is complete and built correctly. If you're still struggling I could maybe take a look if you want.

I thought it might be limitation in doing the split in the vertical plane, I glanced one mention of that being the case in a very old topic.

But now your one does it in the opposite direction it seems more feasible.

Because the track is going the opposite direction, I'm actually not sure how to merge into a vertical track spike in only one direction like you're hoping too.  I'm sure its possible but I don't know you would pull that off unfortunately.

    Sorry about that.
