Theme Park Discussion / [TR] - Blomberg Blitz 18.11.2017 (50 pictures!)

    As the great J.R.R. Tolkien wrote in The Lord of the Rings: "I want to see mountains again, Gandalf, mountains, and then find somewhere where I can rest." Most of this doesn't apply, I don't speak to Gandalf for instance, but the first part is the important one: I wanted to see mountains, or at least large hills. I can see the alps from a artificial mountain 30 minutes from my doorstep, but that doesn't count. I want to have the whole experience. So I looked for an interesting place to go within the MVV area (Munichs public transport, for which I have a students ticket anyways) and found something. That was last week. Today my view at 7:34 a.m. looked like this:

    [attachment=26162:DSCN1056.JPG]

    Early bird, and so on. I walked to my nearest train station and arrived at 8:00 a.m. (I went to the ATM on the way) and was obviously greeted by a rather empty station:

    [attachment=26163:DSCN1058.JPG]

    I rode the U6 for a while and then made myself ready for the S7. I took this pic (for Jappy):

    [attachment=26164:DSCN1059.JPG]

    And then actually read what the information display shows: The train had some kind of problem so it wasn't able to go all the way to the end station (my destination). To substitute Taxis would be provided at the last still usable station. On the station I saw this church:

    [attachment=26165:DSCN1061.JPG]

    ...and on the train I saw this weird building:

    [attachment=26166:DSCN1064.JPG]

    Also, one more for Jappy:

    [attachment=26167:DSCN1065.JPG]

    The train stopped in Baiersbrunn and I had to change to the Taxi. On the way I took a pic of some deer that seem to be held here:

    [attachment=26168:DSCN1068.JPG]

    I only had a 7 minute window and the bus I needed to take only went every 2 hours. Lucky, the Taxi only lost 5 minutes and stopped right next to the bus stop so I was easily able to get on the bus. I stayed on it for 40-odd minutes and got off in the middle of nowhere. The roads were basically 1.5 cars wide in this area.

    [attachment=26169:DSCN1069.JPG]

    10:06 was right on time, so I had high hopes that this day will indeed be a good one. I don't really care about the way back (since I only had to catch 1 crucial bus and the connections afterwards didn't matter) and started on my journey. I had to walk for roughly 40 minutes to get to my end goal.

    [attachment=26170:DSCN1070.JPG]

    On the way I saw a lot of typical Bavarian stuff. Plus, a golf resort for whatever reason.

    [attachment=26171:DSCN1072.JPG]

    I pretty much walked on the road, but since there were no cars I didn't mind. It was pretty much a perfect path for the morning.

    [attachment=26172:DSCN1073.JPG]

    [attachment=26173:DSCN1075.JPG]

    I will now take the time to introduce the hashtag #creekporn because I have taken plenty pictures of creeks. Deal with it.

    [attachment=26174:DSCN1078.JPG]

    Also this picture, which doesn't exactly have a creek in it, but the hill on the other side of the creek.

    [attachment=26176:DSCN1084.JPG]

    At this point I reached the highest point of this mountain and saw something very typical of this region:  Meadows.

    [attachment=26177:DSCN1086.JPG]

    The goal slowly came into sight. And with it some sweet valleys.

    [attachment=26178:DSCN1088.JPG]

    I guess at least now you should guess where this is going. I liked the contrast between the green and the snow.

    [attachment=26179:DSCN1091.JPG]

    Then I passed this building. Quite a nice one, again. You can sleep there, but I don't know how much it'd cost.

    [attachment=26180:DSCN1095.JPG]

    For all the slow ones out there: My goal, the "Blomberg Blitz", is obviously an Alpine Coaster.

    [attachment=26181:DSCN1098.JPG]

    Alas, my efforts to cross this mountain were unexpectedly thwarted: The local rural bureaucracy decided to close the path. I was a bit surprised since a couple of signs clearly indicated that this was the correct way to my goal. I guess they closed it for the winter and didn't bother to show that change of circumstances on the signs. I had to backtrack for a bit but that was alright, I had time.

    [attachment=26182:DSCN1099.JPG]

     The alternate path was quite a lovely one. At first it was literally just a path of flattened grass, but it did have some nice moments, like this "gateway" through some foliage:

    [attachment=26183:DSCN1100.JPG]

    And some nice views:

    [attachment=26184:DSCN1101.JPG]

    On this you can actually see the "path" on the lower left.

    [attachment=26185:DSCN1102.JPG]

    This pic is quite nice, I think?

    [attachment=26186:DSCN1104.JPG]

    In the valley I was lied to. Seriously, this sign says that the path is "mostly sunny" but there was no sun to see anywhere.

    [attachment=26187:DSCN1107.JPG]

    I had to walk next to the road here, so I did what I enjoy best. Making pictures of creeks:

    [attachment=26188:DSCN1108.JPG]

    Considering that this is the alternate view I think you will be content with more creek:

    [attachment=26189:DSCN1110.JPG]

    Like this here:

    [attachment=26190:DSCN1111.JPG]

    Not big, but still looks kinda glorious:

    [attachment=26191:DSCN1113.JPG]

    I payed 15€, got three tickets and off was the wild ride. This Alpine Coaster was extended in 2016 and it's pretty clear that the upper part is the extended bit, since it's way better. The lower part was a bit of a bore, but well, you can't have everything. At least this one wasn't always trimme like the Kolbensattel one. Here my glorious selfie:

    [attachment=26211:IMG_20171118_111101.jpg]

    After I finished two of my three laps I decided to hike up the mountain. I wasn't sure about going all the way up (it took my 3 hours to get here and it would probably take at least 2.5 to get home) but I wanted to see how it gos. On the way up I was able to make some more pics of the Blitz:

    [attachment=26192:DSCN1115.JPG]

    [attachment=26193:DSCN1116.JPG]

    The path was somewhat step but in good condition and therefore easy to walk. I kind of dreaded the way back down, though.

    [attachment=26194:DSCN1120.JPG]

    It was nice, nonetheless.

    [attachment=26195:DSCN1121.JPG]

    I decided to engrave "NE" forever on a board on the side of the path. Well, at least for most of today.

    [attachment=26196:DSCN1123.JPG]

    Creek, this time in the snow and higher up:

    [attachment=26197:DSCN1126.JPG]

    And I stood on snow for the first time this winter!

    [attachment=26198:DSCN1127.JPG]

    I don't know, lifts that don't run have this weird, sad beauty:

    [attachment=26199:DSCN1128.JPG]

    [attachment=26200:DSCN1129.JPG]

    [attachment=26201:DSCN1130.JPG]

    Shortly thereafter I reached new heights and I wasn't a fan. It was icy and it began to snow. The road was less steep, but the ice made it annoying to walk anyways. I decided to turn back and walk the long way down. At the bottom I took my third ride and then made a couple of pics of the main attraction of the area:

    [attachment=26202:DSCN1133.JPG]

    Of course I felt compelled to make a coaster nerd shot, in which I zoom in to an unnecessary degree on a technical thing on the coaster.

    [attachment=26203:DSCN1135.JPG]

    On the way back I thought to myself "every picture with reflections in it is automatically art", so here we go:

    [attachment=26204:DSCN1137.JPG]

    A building on my way back:

    [attachment=26205:DSCN1140.JPG]

    The Blomberg. Looks like it goes on forever.

    [attachment=26206:DSCN1141.JPG]

    This time, the creek has a little waterfall:

    [attachment=26207:DSCN1142.JPG]

    And this creek has an S-bend.

    [attachment=26208:DSCN1145.JPG]

    I also saw a cat. It was orange so I felt compelled to make a picture:

    [attachment=26209:DSCN1150.JPG]

    I reached the bus stop but had 30 minutes left. So I decided to walk the next two stops. On the way I discovered that the clouds actually didn't hide anything of the mountain:

    [attachment=26210:DSCN1157.JPG]

    And that's it. I will probably come back in April or May and hike to the top.

    Well you had a nice walk. Can't do that here...

    Railway archeology! Awesome! The alpine coaster looks fun too. Nice cat.
