I'm sure many of you have heard, the good ole' Govt. specifically the RIAA, is soon to start anew on it's crackdown of free file sharing, taking some rather desperate, and illegal measures.

Suing the companies distributing file sharing customers isn't working, actually, it's failing miserably.

So now they are going after customers, not all of them, that's impossible (my Kazaa says there are 3,817,133 users on right now, sharing over 800 million files) they are targeting a few, in hopes to scare all into ditching the software.

Going after a few is very hard as well, but they are going to make ite easier, they are trying to pass bills that would give them the ability to force servers and providers to reveal the identitiy of an ISP with no charges against them. They can do that already, but only if the user has already been confirmed to be a criminal.

But now they will be able to do that to anybody and everybody that they claim to be a criminal.

This is unwarranted search and seizure on the greatest level, and another case of invasion of privacy, but it could mean the end of file sharing. This could scare away everyone you get your music from.

It all depends on how harsh the punishments are. If its a small fine, then I belive p2p will prevail, but if you get five years in prison for KazaA, no one NO ONE, will be willing to risk it, spending five years in a dank cell with a guy named Bubba who rapes you every night, five years away from your family, for the sake of free music, hell no.

And it depends ultimately on whether or not the bills get passed, I don't think they will, but with all the other invasion of privacy going on, I wouldn't be suprised.

But I propose an idea, they are attacking the main file sharers, so limit what you have, delete everything you have on a cd already, and burn everything else onto one, never keep files on your computer, and you should not be a tempting target, but you never know how random their searches may be.

If all hell breaks lose and KaZaA goes into the stockades with napster, or goes pussy like iMesh, then people could just make a little pact with your friends that anyone who gets a cd, burns a copy for all their friends in secret, and anyone with a cable modem should use AIM to transfer any song straight from cd to someone else's computer.

The music industry is fighting change, they are denying a blessing, free advertisement.

A survey shows that most people download mp3s because CD prices are way too high, 16 songs for $16 dollars, thats insane, you shouldn't get into the music industry for the money, you should do it for love of music. But I know its driven by greed.

I honestly think the RIAA's plan is doomed to failure, whats the difference between sharing a music file and any other file? How would you know what people are sharing, do you watch every download, do you keep track of everyone's online activities? What is the difference between and illegal copy, and a gift? An the difference between a copy and a backup?
There is no argument on their side other than "it's against the law,"

why is it against the law? "because the music is the property of it's creators,"

no, music is expression, and we are a country which claims to grant free expression.

The RIAA isn't pursuing KaZaA because it's stealing songs from their owners, it's going after them because they aren't as rich as they were. I think they are plenty rich enough don't you, It's time to stop worshipping the stardom of music and start enjoying the fact that music is good on its own, without the artists. They will get enough credit from concerts and word of mouth, which can be provided by KaZaA better than any record store.

I have taken steps to limit my chances of getting sued though, i've gone for 976 shared files to 123 files.

I suggest you do the same until RIAA stops invading our privacy.

Don't worry, I doubt they'll ever stop P2P. Hacking millions of computers and deleting MP3's seems a little difficult.

I'm interested to see what they are going to do about the users, when only 6 million of the over 70 million users are in the US (Thats what the article in Wired said).

Now, we wouldn't want the poor RIAA or MPAA running into some Columbian's who are downloading gay anal porn and saying your under arrest, in an AIM conversation.

Yeah, that's a 1 in 36 chance you'll get picked for the users online right now. That's kinda worrying, but since I only have 64 files, I'm not scared. It's people that have over 99 that I worry for.

exactly, so I'm keeping a low profile, I've gone all the way down to 66 files by now, and those are gonna be moved to a different folder so they aren't detected in Kazaa, I know i'm being a freeloader, but desperate times call for desperate measures, I just burned 500 files onto a cd and then deleted them, and thats the fourth volume.

Let them get american criminals find out most americans aren´t criminals and let them find out it´s not just americans that use kazaa. And it´s a bit easy to hide one or two or three of those hard disks and keep a clean one don´t you think?

however, it is killing the music bussiness eventually. The free advertisement argument just doesn´t budge. Artists need money from cd´s to get the popularity for concerts. The only way to make it all work is to make a legal version of kazaa, with the ability for the artists to post their music or whatever, and sponsors for when something is so popular there can be a concert. I don´t think that´s exactly what´s happening on kazaa right now.

It´s interesting tho. Trying to solve the unsolvable. =/.

lol i have about 2000 files between me and my family.
but they are mostly kept away from the sharing thingy.
i currently use Soul Seek anyhow (thanks to some guy on these boards) very cool.

Am i safe in the UK? I have about 3500 files and I love letting people have my music and having their music. I buy a load of CD's, upload them to the computer and then let people download them off KaZaA. Surely that's not illegal, i am just swapping files with people.... hmmmm, i hate laws. They suck!

Does deleting the spyware do any good, thats what I did.

Why is it illegal though? If they sell it, then that is piracy. If you let a freind borrow a CD, thats letting a freind borrow a CD.

I think that Kazaa leans more towards the CD-swapping than piracy. In fact, Kazaa fucking is CD-swapping, not piracy. It is just a brand new age of CD-swapping.

Some people have 100's though...just move them out of your shared file. That will keep you protected, they're just in a different folder.
