General Chat / What movies have you seen this year?

  • cg?%s's Photo
I am sure that upon reading the unbearably cryptic subject line “What movies have you seen this year?”, you were all incredibly intrigued as to what the purpose and point of this topic may in fact be.

Perhaps you thought that this might be yet another ignorant rant against all of your lame-ass musical tastes. Alternatively, you may have thought that this was yet another rambling bit of left-wing propaganda. Then again, you may have thought of something entirely different. However, I am quite positive you were not thinking that this might be a topic about what new-release films you have seen within a cinematic theatre during the course of the past year (beginning January 1st, 2003).

Alas, that is why I am indeed so wondrous, for this is most definitely a topic about what new-release films you have seen within a cinematic theatre during the course of the past year (beginning January 1st, 2003).

My list is as follows, from what I can remember anyways:

    The quiet American - 8/10

    Spirited away - 9/10

    Winged migration - 7/10

    Lost in translation - 7.5/10

    American splendor - 6/10

    Capturing the Friedmans - 5/10

    Swimming pool - 7/10

    Whale rider - 6.5/10

    The hulk - 4/10

    Tomb raider 2 - 2/10

    Dirty pretty things - 6/10

    Northfork - 7/10

    Peices of April - 7/10

Anyways, that is all I can come up with, and I doubt it is too incomplete. I have not gone to the cinema nearly enough lately, a fact which disgusts me greatly. This is why I am thinking about getting was is essentially a season pass to the local Art house, which costs $175 for two people, and you get a year of free movies, and free refills of popcorn, soda and candy. Unfortunately, their alcoholic products are not included, and unfortunately, I would be too young to take advantage of such an offer, if it were indeed available.

Dear lord, this is perhaps my most wordy post in ages. Well, whatever, you post your lists (or just list your top 10, seeing as I posted about the same number of films myself).

Also note that the ratings listed above, are based entirely on what I thought of the movie, when the movie faded to black, and the credits started rolling. They should not be thought of as a definitive look at my opinions of the movie, least of all in relation to other films.

Edit: I forgot three movies, which I have since remembered:

    Finding Nemo - 7/10

    Bruce almighty - 5/10

    Intolerable cruelty - 6/10

Edit, again: As I said below, I saw The station agent last night. I'll give it 8/10, I think.

Edit, yet again: According to the IMDB, The man on the train is comming out on DVD this week, in the United states. This news brought about my remembering that I had seen it, and I had loved it. 7.5/10.

Oh dear, all this time spent typing and all for it to end up in the wrong forum. Of course, I knew this would happen, but was far too lazy to do anything about it. Could somebody please move this to its appropriate area?

    ^You're welcome. :)

As for me, it was a rather dismal year in terms of going out for entertainment.

I saw a grand total of three films in the theatre, and while I have rented some, that's not the point of the topic.

With that said, here are the three films I saw, in order.

-The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers
-Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones (IMAX)
    -Finding Nemo

Yep, that's it. No X2, no Matrix 2 or 3, or T3. Nothing else. Still, I think that's a pretty good list for only 3 films, especially the new ones of Towers and Nemo. I'd seen Clones a few times in the original format anyway.

With Gavin here, I'm amazed we went to both LOTR and Nemo, as he was present, and even more surprised we made it through both films completely!

I'm hoping to rent Matrix 2 and then go see the 3rd in the theatres, but if it's that or Return Of The King, then I'll wait for the latter.

    Thanks for the topic cg?...

    Kai :huey:

That's only stuff that was released for the first time in 2003. I've seen alot of stuff from other years this year... but they are too many to bother listing. Unfortunately, there isn't alot of independant or smaller stuff I've seen yet because I don't really have an arthouse near me, and the closest is in a pretty seedy part of town. So I'm going to have to wait for DVD to see thing such as American Splendor, Lost in Translation, City of God, Elephant, Gerry, Northfork, etc.

I don't really get out to see movies much. The theater around my house is the only one in about five cities so they have no competition and charge $9.50. Luckily, matinee shows are $6.50 and at night for students is $7, I think. Anyway, I think this is it:

    Finding Nemo
    Pirates of the Carribean
Lord of the Rings: Two Towers (twice. I'll probably end up seeing RotK twice as well.)

That's it really. I feel bad for even posting as Kai's list is basically mine. I thought I'd seen more though. Ah well, I'm definately going to see RotK and I may get to see Revolutions before it's taken out of theaters. (After all, I can buy my own ticket now! :w00t: )

The whole year? Egads. New movies only. I can't even begin to count all the movies I've seen for the first time on video or in classes or other screenings during the year.

    About Schmidt
    Adaptation
    Narc
    Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
    Far From Heaven
    Identity
    The Hulk
    Matrix Reloaded
    The Italian Job
    Terminator 3
    28 Days Later
    Pirates of the Carribean
    Step Into Liquid
    Freddy vs. Jason
    League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
    Underworld
    Matchstick Men
    Thirteen
    Seabiscuit
    Kill Bill Volume 1
    Matrix Revolutions
    City of God
    Mystic River

There's probably more I forgot but that's most of them. There's still a lot I want to see and even more that I have no desire to see. I would recommend Thirteen, 28 Days Later, City of God, Mystic River, Adaptation, Matchstick Men, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and Far From Heaven.

So I'm going to have to wait for DVD to see thing such as American Splendor, Lost in Translation, City of God, Elephant, Gerry, Northfork, etc.

Please tell me, when is the "City of God" supposed to come out on DVD? It's been about a year since I saw it, I really want to buy it.

Nate I seen the city of god DVD in the UK about 2 months ago and in a magazine I brought a while ago that had a review on it.

Haven't seen the film but thinking about renting it out if its still in our blockbuster.

Yesterday evening, I went to our local art house* to go see The station agent, a great little movie. Of course, most people like to add 'about a dwarf' to the end of that sentence, but why? This isn't a movie with a point, it isn't even a movie with a plot. It is simply a movie about people, living. It's quite a touching film, with some great writing and acting and music. Go see it!

*I continuously call this place our local art house, however that is dramatically underselling it. It is in fact an amazing movie palace dating back to the 1920's, filled with some of the most amazing interior design I have ever witnessed in person.

It was saved from destruction by a bunch of liberal, communist, anti-American, pussies (much like myself), to play the kinds of films they like (and are so hard to find), great independent and classic cinema.

Of course, we now have a genuine art house that's opening up here, with a full seven screens of indie-goodness. Yay!

Let's see... I, too, don't seem to get out to the movies as often as most people do.

Besides the fact that I'm drawing a blank to any movies I saw before June, here's the list in order of viewing:

    -The Italian Job (7/10)
    -Matrix: Reloaded (6/10)
    -The Hulk (4/10)
-Dumb and Dumberer (It was entertaining but 2/10)
    -Pirates of the Caribbean (9/10)
    -Lost in Translation (9/10)
    -Matrix: Revolutions (6/10)
    -Master and Commander (8/10)

Anways, I have a shit memory, but I will try to list the movies that I saw in theatres:

    X2
LOTR: TT (I saw it 2 times i believe)
    The Hulk
    The italian Job
Finding Nemo (i dont normally go to see cartoons.. but everyone said it was so good. I wasn't that impressed.)
    Pirates of the Caribbean

Thats all I can remember, but I have seen many more by renting them.
  • Micool%s's Photo
Forgot that I also saw Bruce Almighty, Dumb and Dumberer and Scary Movie 3. All stupidly hilarious (SM3 was easily the best of the trilogy, and not all of BA was stupid) but under forgettable circumstances, I guess.
