In case any of them rot into VHS tapes. They do that over time.

In case you lose them. Maybe he's moving house or something. Things can be lost very easily. Or maybe he's taking them on holiday. Or maybe there was a theft. There are quite a few examples of why you would want to.

Or the plain fact he want s to watch the DVDs on his computer without using the cd.

Asperix is correct, it is illigal now. It wasn't a month or so ago before the lawsuit against 321 Studios. 321 Studios is responsible for making DVDXCopy, and GameXCopy.
DVDXCopy is a simple program used for creating backups of DVDs, just like you wanted to do. You can't buy it anymore, but if you arn't worried about illigal things, you can still download it over P2P Clients.

^You can still download it. WinMx, Kazaa,Soulseek...

Personally, I don't see much wrong with copying DVD's as a backup...except that it's illegal. Btw is it illegal to backup Music, or Programs, or Games?

Just to let you know, those are P2P clients, as ozone said.

I was suprised not to find it at oldversion.com, but I'll bet it's still online at some archive site. I'll keep looking and let you know if I find anything.

edit: Wow, that was rather easy...

It's not DVDXCopy, but it appears to do what you want. I can't test it though, as I don't have a DVD/R drive.

edit: yeah, sorry... I thaught it was doc who said that.
