    Hey guys
Thanks for the comments. Get home properly tomorrow so can reply to all your comments. But Metropole that really isn't how the hack works I'm afraid. there is a very limited number of ways this can work. I shall show you guys how it's done tomorrow :)

Levis... Sorry it's not up to your crazy ass insane ride standards. but I wanted this hack to be more just part of the back story :)

Guessed as much. As I say, disregard that point, all my other points still stand. Interested to see how it was done.

Your work always amazes me, Roomie. Grats on the 10th Design, by the way.

Now you're thinking with portals Roomie  !
And 5dave, wasn't a version of that coaster image on spartan's sig? Awesome logo though.

    how it was done

timing, merging, track invisibilitizing ( :???: ), and all that stuff.

I thought you did glados very well, and the cake was cool too. overall the theming was just OK, but the hacking and attention to detail to the game made it a great design.

    yeah...what he said.

As you can see in my vote, i liked this alot. I didn't know Portal (the game) before, so it was a lot ot fun to watch some videos and to see how amazingly well you translated all that into LL. I especially liked the custom soundtrack you used, it added so much to the atmosphere. Generally, people should use custom music more often.

Right I have made it back home so can finally get on with this post :)

First things first. This hack is extremely easy and requires almost no knowledge of hacking. All you need is a copy of the game and a trainer to remove clearances.

Here's a quick example. In this image the train disappears from the blue track and reappears on black track. This is the exact hack use for the first 2 portals in this design.

    Posted Image

To do this all you need to do is
    1) Build the black track first. Using in this case an S-Bend as the transition element (It works with almost any track piece)
    2) Build the blue track through the black track making sure the S-Bend starts on the exact same square as the the S-Bend on the black track.
    3) send the train through.

That's it. Somehow this tricks the game into thinking that the S-Bends are the same piece of track and the ride jumps from one track to the other. As I said it works with other elements like corners (3rd Portal in Design) and Corkscrews (4th and 5th Portals). The important things are The track the train exits on must be built BEFORE the track the train arrives on and The 2 track pieces (S-Bends here) must start on the same square).

    Now time for some replies

i saw some early screenshots of this in one of his threads and it just looks great finished. though looking at it overall i see why prod, louis and gee voted low, it's a cool concept but i dont think it works by itself. if he had a entire park with this in it along with some more traditional kind of coasters and keep the same PoRTaL theme then it would be, in that case, spotlight worth. either way it looks just stunning and Kumba should be worried about his spot

Thanks. I know this ride isn't for everyone. But it fulfils something I have wanted to do for a while. I tend to use my designs to showcase concepts (War Of The Worlds and Battlestar for example) and my parks for my real work.

I don't have LL but this is FUCKING awesome. I love how the train go through the portals and out another. EDIT: I also love the cake shop

Thanks very much :) the cake shop was Loopys idea I think.

It took me a few minutes to figure it out, but that's a brilliant use of such an old hack, Roomie. I hadn't realized it worked like that for multi-tile pieces. Nice find, and awesome use of it.

Thanks. Neither had I until I did it completely by mistake in Pinball Wizard.

Absoluteltely spectacular! For a LL design to still cut it with all these great RCT2 designs, this is special.

You ain't seen nothing yet. I have better to come very very shortly.

just fantastic, you are god of this game roomie.I have nothing further to say..

haha thanks. guess it's nice to be a god of something. I always hoped it would be God of Bra's or God of Beer... this will do though :)

yah that was awesome! i haven't really played portal too much, just enough to get the gist of it and know some of the jokes. I thought you did glados very well, and the cake was cool too. overall the theming was just OK, but the hacking and attention to detail to the game made it a great design.really, tell us how you did it? pleeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssssseeeeeeeeee :evil:good logo too, and quit fitting based on that element in the design!

I must admit until a few weeks ago i really wasn't at all happy with this design. However my usual reliable group of testers help me loads with this and I took on their suggestions and changed a lot.
So RCTCA, Milo, Kumba, Robbie92 and Loopy please take a bow.

Wow.....I don't have LL installed. But judging from the overview this is great. I have played Portal and I think you captured the feeling of the game very well. I really don't know how to put it else; just pure RCt brilliance.Oh, compliments to 5Dave for making a very suitable logo for this rct-masterpiece.

Thanks very much :) and as others have said above about the logo I agree. I'm always thrilled when I see I have 5Dave doing a logo for one of my projects and he excelled here.

This was indeed extremely well done, and the extent of your hacking knowledge roomie is something I cannot comprehend. Great idea with the design and the execution was fantastic. What held the score back slightly for me was the part outside. It just seemed like a normal coaster outside of the labs which for me showed a bit of a lack of direction. I would have preferred it if you had stayed completely true to the concept and kept it all in the labs, or mostly so besides the loop or something. Also, I felt you could have done a little more with the coaster inside the labs. This is gonna be tough to say because I have no idea if my suggestions are even possible or whether they would require to much patience, bit it seems you did so well using the portal hack I felt it could have been done a couple more times that really captured what you do in the game, such as a hack with a coaster train launching vertically upwards, then dropping back down through a portal, then launching vertically upwards out of another portal. Or perhaps just a straight launch track made invisible, infinately speeding into a portal and out of another in a line over something representing the speed gel or something similar. Again, disregard these suggestions if they are unfeasible.Anyways, congratulations on the well deserved design, keep the creativity coming!

Thanks for the comments. I hope the spiel about the hack at the top of this post answers why some of your suggestions wouldn't work. In reply to the outside bit I took a bit of an odd direction with this and at points I didn't really know what I wanted. I think this came out a bit too much in the end and without the testers I don't think I would have got back on track.

The original idea was for the portal hack to take a bit of a back seat and the only bit which would be impossible in real life. The ride would start with a dark ride section and end with a normal coaster (Like several rides do in real life) But this ended up not really happening. That version of things was deemed too boring and too sterile by people who saw it.

In the end I added more sections to the Lab and made it a bit more like the game. This inevitably ended up making it seem a bit more confused. (In one version there was even a full sized mock up of the Borealis, The ship seen at the end of Half Life 2: Episode 2)

Anyhow I hope that at least answers some of the thoughts from above :)

actually it kinda dissapointed me roomie. you could have done much more with this hack I think.it doesn't really has the wow factor instantly. you need to take a close look first to see it.still a nice found.

As said above that's really not what I wanted to do. Hacking for the Wow factor is certainly your area of expertise. They were meant to be integrated into the ride in such a way they didn't dominate it.

^^Leo, why must hacks always have a wow factor? Surely subtlty in hacking is equally as desirable...Dave, as I told you through testing, I love this. The lab addition looks really nice, and I like how the lab part was more of an adventure ride than a coaster. I actually liked how the portal hack itself wasn't a huge gimmick and that one had to pay close attention to really notice the hack.

Thanks as always for your help during this design. And cheers for the comments.

Now THIS is the LL I enjoy. Amazing job buddy. Can't wait to see what else you have in store!

You won't have to wait too long :p

FUCKING FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU My LL disk is broken. Other than that, this is awesome and I love the actual games. I wish my LL disk wasn't broken. 8@

Awesome work, too bad i don't longer use LL. but Excellent work.

Thanks very much. I hadn't really realised it was 10 until I saw the write up. And if you don't use LL then go and install it :p it doesn't take up much space.

I agree. I had completely forgotten you could do custom soundtracks in LL until RCTCA reminded me.

To elaborate, this is the same concept that allows merging to work. It's been done for years with single tile pieces, but I could never make it work with multi-tile ones, so this is certainly an interesting find.

This looks awesome! Really cool logo aswell. To bad i can't check it out ingame. Custom parks never work for me in RCTLL, if somebody know how to fix plz pm me or something, cause this is worth looking closer at.

Thx for your help. I'm sorry though, to tell you it wont work for me since I got the deluxe version (meaning i can't install the "Drexler patch") :(

i really wish i could like this, roomie. it is technically incredible. really, really well done. however, it holds none of the atmosphere of portal, and as a massive fan of portal/the whole HL universe, i was largely unimpressed with the presentation of the labs. as we know from portal 2, it's mostly underground, and the typical roomie landscaping/foliage just gets boring after so many releases from you.

overall i get the feeling that this would have turned out better in rct2. this is coming from a massive fan of LL, so no element of prejudice.
  • Roomie%s's Photo
    Haha fair enough Sammy
However since this was made before portal 2 I don't understand how you can really take that into account. And if it was how in the world would you yourself have built in underground?
  • Kumba%s's Photo
Any reason this did not get any points?

Congrats again on the design Roomie. I love the way you pulled off the hacks. I stumbled on it a long time ago while working on DRC (so yes it can be done in RCT2), but never thought of good use for it. I really can't think of a better use of it then what you did here :)
  • RCTMASTA%s's Photo
The rankings recalculate after any new points are given I think, which makes the system go offline for a bit.

This is one where I think I'm going to load LL for. Congrats on the design but I would expect nothing less from you. Well done
