Where do I start? 2 days ago I played in what most likely will go down as the most memorable tournament of my life, I guess I'll start from the top...
I live in Miami and last week me and my Day went up to Gulfstrem to play some $2 games and a mini when I ran into a friend who told me about a Charity Event/Tournament he was going to hold featuring Tom McEvoy. I have always wanted to play with a pro so I decided to look into it.
So me and my Dad register and go to this event which started with Tom giving a seminar for a couple of hours, then he played a live Mini turbo Tournament at Poker Stars and pulled off a second place finish in front of the approximately 55 people, then lunch and finally the Tournament (No-Limit, 4,000 starting chips, 2 Add-ons worth an extra 2,000 chips each, and a 4,000 chip re-buy).
Thx to my friend Sergio who ran the event I got to be at the table with Tom McEvoy when we started. On the first hand I was on the big blind for 50, a few folds over to Tom who bumps it up to 175, everyone folds to me, I have ducks, 22, but I like to play pairs and my blinds when I can, also there was a bounty on Tom's head. Flop Qc-6c-2d. I hit my set and decide to try a slow play so I check to Tom, he fires 225 "Maybe he's on a draw?" I make what I now think was a weak re-raise to 500, he calls. Turn 9c puts a flash out there, I check, Tom fires 800 this time, "oh boy, that might be his flash, but can I fold a set?!" I can't with so many outs to fill, I call. River 5h for a board of Qc-6c-2d-9c-5h (I think, im sure about the Queen, duce and 3 clubs tho) again I check to Tom, he checks too and turns over AQ for to pair, top Kick and I flip over my winning set to beat a World Champion of Poker.
After that I was going downhill fast, I just could not catch anything and soon used my 2 Add-ons and still was down to 1,100 in chips for a an extremly short stack. I waited a little and then got 1010 and went all-in, 3 players called and I was so lucky coz every card was lower then an 8! So I qudedrople up and now have a near average amount of chips with about 18 of 40 players remaining. Tom who was at another table was knocked out at this time. So now I have some chips to play with and I won a couple nice pots and my stack became pretty decent, but then I decided to gamble a little with about 12 players left. I had AQ suited and called to see a 4 player flop of Kd-8d-10h, the player under the gun goes all in with a little more then half my stack and I decide to gamble on my big draw vs him and push my bigger stack all in so we can be heads up, it works, but I miss my 20 outer draw (He had a pair of tens). The good news was a 2 players went out the next hand and we were down to a 10 player final table.
They announced that the 9th place prize would be a WPT official chip set that I had my eye on the moment I walked in. The other prizes were entries into other big Tournaments this month that I might not be able to go to anyways due to finals week at College.
So with another extremely short stack (2chips) I am hoping one more player goes down and I can land 9th place and the chip set. I get my wish on the first hand and it's down to 9 players and hey, I can also say I made the final table.
Now are you ready for this hand? I move all-in, in the dark! and stand up. 3 players go to a flop of 6-A-9 rainbow, one small bet thats called all around, then the turn... another 9 pairs the board... I was in seat 6, seat 5 made a huge bet and seat 8 thought about it... thought about it and said "I fold" and tossed his cards at the center of the table where they hit some chips and made a little contact with my hand "Your hand is dead" I hear a player say, then a floor man agrees my hand is dead. My hand did have contact with his, but it was clear which cards were mine (No I did not have a chip protector, I think I will start using one tho...) so anyways curiosity got the better of me and I look at my hand... A9, I had a full house mocked! wow was I pissed, I would have probably flipped the table and gone totally insane if it was not for the amazing fact I was happy to take 9th place and that awesome chip set and I would not have had that many chips left anyways.
So for a 22 year old like me that was one amazing day of poker that I will never forget. It was great playing with Tom McEvoy, he's a very nice guy and even listened to some of my corny poker jokes and give a few chuckles. -

So you tossed a hand that could have been bank and kept you in? Considering how much everyone else put down...
A little more ambition does a body good, ya know? =P -

You might want to read it again Blitz coz I did not do that, they folded my hand.
Sorry about the lingo, I copied it off a post I made at a poker site...
In laymen terms:
1. I beat a World Champion out of about half money he had in the game.
2. They decided to DQ my last hand because another plays cards touched it by mistake knocking me out of the tournament.
Heres an Analogy for #2: You go to vote and are in the process of filling out your ballot when a guy walk past you trips. One of the mans hands touches your ballot. A poll work comes over and informs you that you will not be able to vote in the election because your ballot was interfered with.Basically I got fucked and was taken out of the tournament, but I did win a great prize for finishing in 9th so I was not as mad as I could have been.
Tho my Dad might have gotten even more unlucky with how he got busted out of the tournament when he went all in thinking his opponent had barely any chips left, but it turned out the guys arm as blocking a huge stack of chips... and had Pocket Aces, lol. He's been in a pretty bad mood since that mistake. -

Yea, to clarify in clear English, Kumba is saying he went to a tournament where there happened to be a pro poker player. He played at the table with the pro, beat him out of a hand, and eventually made it to the final table, where he went all-in without looking at his cards because he was content with getting 9th place and winning the chips. Another player tossed his cards when folding, these cards made contact with Kumba's cards, and by rule this means Kumba's hand is dead, meaning it is folded and cannot win the hand. This meant Kumba lost his chips and finished in 9th.
Hope that clarifies for those of us who can't comprehend Kumbaish. -

I don't know anything about Poker lingo, but I didn't have any trouble interpreting what went on. Like anything else you just sort of put a placeholder wherever there's a term you don't understand and hope by the end of the sentence it'll make sense anyway. Which it pretty much did. And I'm pretty sure judging from Blitz's comment that he understood just fine too. Cause my comment is pretty much the same -- what the fuck kind of a game eliminates you because some jackass threw his cards at yours? That's just fucking stupid. Who cares if you were happy with 9th place, you won the hand. If your hand is ruled dead, and you're all in, I don't see why they wouldn't have to scrap the whole round and start over. But oh yeah, I guess that's poker. Some game.
Congrats though. It sounds like you know what you're doing and had a good day overall. -

I wasn't as clear in my intention, but atleast ed gets me =(
and yeah, i understood that your hand became "dead", I was talking about you throwing it down and standing up in the first place. I may be misinterpretting that, though. -

Sounds like the guy who carelessly tossed his cards at yours should have taken ALL the punishment for that act, and you NONE. If those are the kinds of bullshit rules they have in pro poker tourneys, I would never enter one, and if I were you I would have been waiting for that guy in the parking lot with a tire iron. (yeah, im that nuts- J/K - or am I?
)
Anyway, speaking in a broader sense, whats to stop someone from "accidentally" tossing his cards on someone else's at any time? A person could do that on purpose, and make it look like an accident, just because they are pissed about something. Theres no way to determine if someone were to do that intentionally, or unintentionally. Total Bullshit
Oh yeah, and congrats on winning that chipset, KumbaEdited by ride_exchanger, 06 December 2006 - 09:08 AM.

I´m not a poker player, but I enjoyed the review, and it indeed seemed you had a great day (and a nice chip-set) Kumba!
To the comments about the accident with the touching hands:it seems very tough that also Kumba was punished for this, but I can understand it quite well: honest (as well as dishonest)Poker, like many card-games, falls or stands by players not having any "codes" amongst each other to give signs about their hands. And the rules about that have to be very strict. How could anyone be sure that it was not a sign between the other player and Kumba to give him some information of any kind?
I have been playing bridge for quite some years on a rather decent level.
In competitions it was all strictness also: Once I decided to play, when I was not halfway recovered from a severe cold (did not want to miss the rest of the competition and did not want to let my partner down).
but whatever I tried I could not stop myself from frequently having to cough. We were winning fine, but our competetitors repeatedly called in the ref, complaining that my coughings were coded signs to my partner during the bidding......and we were disqualified for the rest of that tournament. (even if my partner and me were known in that world during years and known to never ever have done anything against the rules, while our competitors were fairly new) So, not only me, but also my partner was punished for it.........It was a bit hard to swallow, but I could understand it nevertheless.
This sentence from Ride-exchanger will be the clue to it :Theres no way to determine if someone were to do that intentionally, or unintentionally.
Now, that was years ago and we happily won some other tournaments thereafter, but by
now I just still play bridge for pure fun - like RCT-, so that while playing we can even have social talk and jokes and an occasional glass of wine, and if couples are suspected to play unfair, they are only friendly asked to stop that behaviour........
And compare it to H2H: those poor Bandits winning so much and having most points all during the season.....comes one crappy player in the play-offs with a park that is just not good enough to win, and the whole team is "punished" and cut off from playing any further , yes life can be tough.....
Thanks for the story Kumba, it was a good read. -

Poker is like sexual intercourse. Sometimes you get lucky, but sometimes you have to shell out a few bucks for a long night of fun. It all depends on the cards you've been dealt. Naturally, it is important to keep your hands in plain sight during both activities. STD's are like money. Whoever has the most gets lucky the most often, if you know what I mean. Then, once you get your winnings you're kind of like a female stripper in a weird way because you get fifty bucks and blow them all in one night. -
