News / Happy New Year! Its Rant Time!

Heh, nice debate, but I don't really agree with anyone here about rap. The new rap music is like 30 choruses in a row or a few verses and a chick singing 4 chorus verses. Eminem knows how it's done but he's extremely depressing to listen to.

If I'm going to listen to rap, it's going to be old school stuff. Though the artists Iris mentioned are good, no one can do it like the old Run DMC or DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince.

But what do I know about rap.

Well Micool, I understand your point-of-veiw, however, things ive listend to isn't the garbage put on the radio. Most of my favorite songs on rap albums are those never heard on shows like TRL.
  • Micool%s's Photo
    Well, that's good.

    TRL sucks.

Britney should host it, that's what.

Hit me baby one more time
    I can't think of a better rhyme.

Anyway, I loved the update, even if the theming guides were a bit contentless to some, they would be very helpful to others. Very well written trip report too - love it!

    Congratulations :0

DJ Skribble, Kay Slay, DJ Clue.

Oh, dear. Well, those are all shit, truly. As for mixtapes, the only good ones I've come by are those by DJ Spooky and Dan The Automator along with the Brainfreeze and Product Placement tapes from DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist.

Typically, the albums I listen to are newly created works of sample-based, sound collage, somethinerathers. Essentially, the beats minus the ryhmes and all the better for it.

Chauncey, you dont know it is a fact.
Its your opinion, which is not fact.

Personally, I don't see how some idiotic white-boy jumping up on stage with crappy beats talking about how his life sucks, while being backed by wanna-be thugged out "niggas", represents hip-hop culture in the slightest.

I do see, however, how the work of intelligent, gifted musicians crafting creative, and oft-times glorious works of art, filled with love and passion for not only "rap" music, but music in general, represents hip-hop culture to the maximum.

That isn't really an opinion, or fact, so much as an observation.

The new rap music is like 30 choruses in a row or a few verses and a chick singing 4 chorus verses.

Which is why I advise people not to listen to Jay Z, Eminem, Nas, 50 Cent, Nelly, etc, because that's all they do.

On the other hand, rappers like Blackalicious and DJ's like DJ Spooky, continuosly create ground-breaking and beautiful hip-hop, which is nothing like what you've stated. In fact, it is about the polar opposite of that.

In fact, Public Enemy even said "good person" in their raps, but does it make them idiots? No.

Of course not, because they used it in an intelligent and skillful way. Most rappers, however, insert the whole "bling-bling" lunacy, along with foul and offensive langauge in replace of true message, poetry, humor, or just about anything else worth saying.

    So wait a second Chauncey...

First you say at DNET that Eminem should get many awards, then, you say, dont listen to him?

You even said you enjoyed his tracks about killing his wife? Your making no sense here.

First you say at DNET that Eminem should get many awards, then, you say, dont listen to him?

To begin with, at the time I said Eminem deserved many awards the only Hip-Hop I had heard was on MTV and the radio.

Furthermore, he is incredibly talented. Then again, look at what he's done with it. Nothing. He squanders his talent for commercial gain and popularity.

And Kim, despite it's short commings, is an intense, personal and wonderful song.

Oh ok, so in a period of..... 3 months, you learned everything about true hip hop?

    Cool with me.

No. In 3 months I've learned everything I possibly could about true hip hop. It isn't everything, nor do I claim it to be everything, and I'm still picking up a wealth of knowledge with each passing day, however, I at least try and make an effort.

You, along with most people, just seem to turn on MTV, look at what's hot, buy the album, and accept it as good.
  • Fatha'%s's Photo
No Chauncey, I buy an album because it has what I like, not what you like. And, like I said before, true hip-hop is what whomever composes it it believes it is, not what you believe it is. JayZ, Eminem, and Nas are legitimate hip hop artists, all the artists you mentioned are as well. You cant determine a genre of music because you think some artists suck.

nice updates fatha. Cd reviews were nice, but i think you and iris overated things, yet its your opinion. THe themeing guides where nice and loved the Trip report. BTW, i really liked Tropico Horizons, it ended up #5 on my 'list' FYI.

Wonderful, good for you, but it has no reason to be liked. None.

Well i thought it was good. but the album reviews, haha. I don't like rap, but I do respect it. The theming was again okay. I hope to see more of a range of music in the album reviews though.

The closest thing to a rap album I've ever had is Rage, so I'm not an expert on rap or anything, but in my opinion, groups like J5 are far better than any of the commercial crap, like in all art forms. Not only do they can rap about stuff other than bling, bitches and hoes, but they do cool stuff like vocal harmonizing on some of they're tracks. Personally, I enjoy listening to my miniture colletion of their mp3's far more than any act like Nelly, Ja-Rule, Jay-Z, and even Em.

I'm just putting in my two cents here, not joining in on the rap debate.
