Yeah, but personally, I'd hit up every other theme park there before I did the Six Flags. Marvel Super Hero park? Yes please! -

^Did you hear about the hotel that got over 5 stars? With expensive stuff like that, spending a day at SF Dubailand would be spending chump change. Unless they make it really lavish. Like massage chairs on the coasters that run while you wait for the ride to start. Once the ride op pushes the button, the chairs turn off. Or 5 star service at every consession stand, or brand name clothing at each gift shop. Uber-clean restroom facilities trimmed with gold. Speaking of gold, how about a coaster train inlaid with gold? The price for a one day pass to this rich-man's park? 500 dollars a ticket, at least. -

^Keep dreaming...
The hotel you're talking about is the Burj Al Arab. It's that white weird-shaped building build on a men made island. 7 stars, one of it's kind. It has a tenniscourt/heli landingpad on top of it. I suck at tennis, but I'd give anything to suck at it at the Burj.
I like the idea of taking a crap in gold.Edited by Coaster King, 23 December 2008 - 01:57 PM.

The real idea behind the tourist trade isn't really to build up the tourist industry in Dubai. It brings in jobs, which bring in people. And those people need doctors and lawyers and teachers and bus drivers and... It was the same with WDW. Orlando was hardly worth mentioning before Disney came to town. Now its huge metropolitan area with its own international airport and professional sports teams.
Everyone is concerned at how many tourists this is going to bring in, but just watch how many people go to live there in the next 30 years.Edited by Midnight Aurora, 23 December 2008 - 03:55 PM.

Dude, Barcelona for sure although Madrid is even better.I'm having a hard time right now. Where to buy a villa. Barcelona or Dubai? Looks interesting. And big.
I've been to dubai 3 times. It''s the best example I've ever seen of an "it" destination. I know it sounds dumb but there is simply too much money being thrown at this place.
Thing is, I imagine that quite a bit of market research and projection has been done and that the people behind this know what they're doing.
I reckon the main problem is that Dubai doesn't know whether it wants to be a high-end or a family destination and it ain't possible to be both, unless you're Vegas. Sure, families go there but at the minute that's not where Dubai's tourist trade is and no way will 50 year old tycoons be going to Six Flags Dubailand, even though most of them will be investors in it.
That said, this park will be amazing. I know that because I know there'll be a shitload of money pumped into it. -

ok, the only REAL reason dubailand is a bad idea: rising sea levels.
Outside of the fact that dubai is dangerously close to sea level and in danger of being submerged in a few decades, this is actually a sound financial decision for six flags. I'll clarify this statement: IF IT WEREN'T FOR THE FACT THAT THE REGION WILL BE UNDER WATER IN LESS THAN 3 DECADES, BUILDING THE WORLDS MOST MASSIVE COLLECTION OF THEMEPARKS IN THE WORLDS LARGEST HIGH-END TOURIST DESTINATION COULD ACTUALLY BE CONSIDERED A SOUND FINANCIAL INVESTMENT. Is this really that hard to understand? Dubai has been switching from an oil based economy to a tourist based economy for the last 15 years, and at a frightening pace. And just FYI, the fucking climate is fucking perfect, then planning is the best in the world, the execution and notoriety has reached critical mass, and they are making BANK off of these investments! You guys are IDIOTS to think they are "relying" on oil at this point, and just being BRATS about the placement of a new park you'll never go to because it's too far away and now there'll be even more coaster points you'll never earn. Boo frickin hoo, cry me a river you insufferable nerds.
The only smart people are daisy and MA. And yeah, they've definitely thought about the family vs high end. They are using zoning to seperate it out, just watch, it'll work. -

Damn, Blitz didn't bunch me in with Daisy/MA. I did mention there was a possibility they would succeed, too! Make me feel special, damn it! -

Dubai will be fine, Blitz. according to some theories, the Earth is expanding. As long as it's expanding as fast as the sea is rising, Dubai should be alright.
(I don't necessarily buy in to this theory, but it's got enough to it to make it worth discussing... Some of the related videos show evidence of his theory on other planets, too. Worth checking out.) -

Neal is creative, but dumb. Common sense, logic, and empirical evidence put "expanding earth" to rest a long time ago, and apparently, still does. Not that contrary theories are a bad thing, but neal never presented a strong case, just admirable animation skills. -

Heh, i remember my pop showing me some Expanding Earth videos and reading off some "evidence". I just thought the guy was off in his own little world making sense of the things around him so that he could make peace with how things work, but then again, I guess we all do that in our own varied ways. -

Well, consider me convinced, Blitz. But I'm still going to bring it up at parties to piss off geology majors. -

So now it looks like most of the announced parks are canceled or on hold. Surprise.
