General Chat / Holy Shizzle, RCT Still lives?

  • Dirk Pitt%s's Photo

I know you are an RCT site, but I thought perhaps you would evolve towards that path since RCT is over what, 14 years old now? It's natural to evolve to something new especially if NL2 has the potential to be an 3d RCT playground style of a game instead of that RCT 3d crapshoot.

Glad to see RCT still going, my teens years was greatly enjoyed by RCT and I'm glad others are still maintaining their work on the game and enjoying it, especially for an such old game.

Anyways, if the NL2 people on here would point me out to some good fan sites similar to the old NE, lead me the way.

    Thanks!

Shogo - I just don't think members have the time to talk to each other on a forum anymore. With the current social media obsession, people want to do things that require little time, share status, repost things, like things. All things that take the tiniest action. Actually posting something requires too much effort for most people nowadays, which is a shame. Its the reason why parks don't get a lot of attention anymore.

DP - I get what you are saying but if you think about it, we have been present here for over 12 years, in that period we have evolved once. From LL to RCT2, and even then LL is still present. The reason we evolved to RCT2 was because a lot of people took to it. No one really took to RCT3 so we didn't evolve, no one here has really taken to the NL series, so there is no reason to evolve. If a large majority were wanting us to implement NL features then sure we would evolve, but there is no need if no one wants it. Plus, to use NL2 like we do RCT people need one hell of a powerful computer and capability to know how to use CAD or 3D modelling tools. Not many people here have that combination.

Best NL site I know would be https://nolimits-exchange.com/

  • Dirk Pitt%s's Photo

Yeah I was here from RCT 1 to CF to LL to RCT2 and did some work on RCT2 until I left for college 8 years ago. I was on the original Danimation site before NE as well. I actually worked with iris together on my fictional theme park company, Two Flags, that was all the rage/trend back then in the old days before he left to form NE.

Just thought I would come here to see if NE evolved to adopt NL2 as the next RCT type of game. Just a innocent query no need to be a bit brash about it. As I said in my first post, I've been out of the loop for a while and this new forum software you guys have doesn't make it easy to search or sort through topics in categories so I thought I would just post and see what was up with the RCT world if they have moved on to something else.

    Thanks.

  • Louis!%s's Photo

I wasn't being brash about it, and I am aware of who you are and that you have been out of the loop. I was just saying that considering we haven't moved on to other RCT games beyond RCT2, moving to a totally new game would be a bit drastic considering our lack of people wanting change, and that if people desired the change, we would start to phase ourselves over to NL. I would've figured, seeing as you were here in the previous transitions, that you would understand the reasonings behind the lack of changes to new games, and understand that i'm not being brash about it, i'm merely explaining why we haven't changed.

If I was trying to be unfriendly, I wouldn't have linked you to an NL site with a decent community. And I wouldn't have tried to give you an explanation as to why we haven't moved on.

well i suppose, and it's coming from a narrow perspective from a guy who has no life whatsoever and has 30,000 something posts on other internet forums, but i find this hypocritical

one can play rct and build to perfection and whatnot, which is hundreds of hours of your life, but commenting something that only took 30 seconds to write isn't worth the time

  • Louis!%s's Photo

That's where I sent him. It's you that is active (or used to be) there isn't it?

Precisely. The difference is that playing RCT is a) something you do for yourself and b) gets you credit in the community. Posting doesn't have the same effect, and that is the only reason I can see for why people don't comment.

I'm guilty myself, I sometimes don't comment on things, but that is normally when I don't even have time for RCT. Hell, I haven't played RCT in weeks, just like I haven't commented in weeks, but now I have the time, its the commenting on things/being active in the community that is taking my priority.

You could argue what is greater for the community to survive/who does more for the community? The people that create the content, or the people that discuss it? The people playing RCT or the people posting comments/talking in the forums?

  • Xeccah%s's Photo

well, yeah sure an rct site would be destroyed with the lack of rct, but at the same time people a lot of times dictate their work on how they think others will feel about their stuff and whatnot, so critcism is needed for those individuals

this isn't condenscending at all though; hell, i'm pretty much one in that group

I was for a while, but have not been in quite some time. Basically since the release of NL2.

Thanks for pointing me there. Just curious since it sounds like you played NL1, do you think its worth it to get NL2 for the purpose of playing it as an RCT game, as in building an theme park, or is it too complicated and too many custom things would have to be added in to make it worth it?

I've been looking around more about NL2 and it does look like some people create flat rides that actually works, but I've seen few NL2 creations with pathways, shops, queue, etc. Most of the creation are just set in a unrealstic blank woody/hilly/watery/etc landscape which is not what I want to do in NL2. The game itself to me is teetering on the brink of being another RCT game for the purpose of theme park creating or being an better copy of NL1 and just staying as an coaster design game. I suppose as more time goes on, hopefully more people will build non-coaster models to add in the game for others to use since the game was just released in August.
  • Ling%s's Photo

If you want to do anything that isn't building a roller coaster and its supports, you need extensive experience with 3DS modelling, and usually the higher-tier submissions are more 3DS than roller coaster. There are no park guests and no management, but the coaster design system is alright. I preferred Newton2 in NoLimits 1.8, and while I've heard FVD++ has gotten better I was never able to figure it out. I might go back to it someday but NL2 is just very frustrating and unintuitive if there are exact/specific things you want to do. Creating very general, wide splines is very easy but fine-tuning is impossible.

  • Dirk Pitt%s's Photo
Hmm, interesting, thank you for your perspective on it. Guess the demo vid shows it off better than what it really is. I could put a lot of time into it and model everything since I do use 3ds but I rather not since that's not what I would enjoy and would be time consuming for what I want to accomplish and get out of the game.

Thanks, perhaps I will try out the demo and see what it's like and if its worth the time for me to enjoy the game as a whole.

    Hello all,

To 99% of you, you probably don't know me, but I lived through the golden ages of RCT way back then when Danimation was THE site for RCT everything.

I'm probably the only person that remembers (and was a staff member of) Cav's RCT Depot which was the very first fan page of RollerCoaster Tycoon. That sight was before Danimation and RCT Station (and way before NE).

  • Mike Robbins%s's Photo

Do you guys still have coaster clubs today? I remember back in my days we had all these groups making parks together with 4-6 members working on a single map and releasing it under a group name, those were quite popular back then.

I was one of the founders of RCT Masters.... a LONG time ago! 14 or 15 years come to think of it!

  • Dirk Pitt%s's Photo

Well hello Mr. Robbins, One of the most famous park makers from back in the days... How are you doing? Coming back to RCT?

Nice to hear back from you!

  • Roomie%s's Photo

Well hello Mr Robbins. Long time no see. I'm also back from way back when :) (Would have been Roomraider back then though)

Although i hate to do it I must disagree about Cavs. The First Roller Coaster Tycoon fan site was the first RCT fan site and went online late 1998. In fact if i remember correctly they carried the first interview with Chris Sawyer announcing the game.  Had a pretty active forum and broke most of the early news about the game. Then came Daves and Cavs RCT sites I think. Maybe RCT Express. Not sure of the order there though.

The way back machine doesnt go that far back for any of them :(

  • AvanineCommuter%s's Photo

I love how both posts about me adress Mike Robbins with "Well hello Mr. Robbins." :D

  • posix%s's Photo

    Good job Roomie :)

  • Mike Robbins%s's Photo

I remember you, Roomie... I remember Dave's now that you mention it. And no RCT comeback for me!

  • Sephiroth%s's Photo

Asian Adventures was one of my favorites back in the day.
