Ask the Experts / Why don't more people play the game disc-free?

  • Shaman%s's Photo
GOGcom offers a download of RCT2 for only $10, and you can play it without the CD. It's WW/TT, sure, but I don't understand why everyone doesn't just get it instead of complain about compatibility. Not every store sells CDs of RCT2 anymore. All of us newer players are going to have RCT2 Triple Thrill from GOGcom. Don't like the scenery? Don't use it. You guys are only limiting the advancement of the game.

So why is it like this?

I have 3 RCT2 discs, why would I want to spend $10 on a download just to play without a disc and clog up my OBJDATA folder with scenery I don't need?
  • Arjan v l%s's Photo
Well... let me explain MY reasons why WW and TT are not welcome.
I have TT and WW as well, but i don't use it anymore.
The reasons are: There are only a few objects interesting from WW or TT and i can convert those with obj editor, so they can be used without WW or TT.
I've allready converted some interesting items ,like some animatronic scenery from TT.
Those can now be used without the need of TT or WW.
Also ,TT and WW take up space in the objdata folder, wich i rather use for the custom scenery that's available here. ;)

doesn't triple thrill pack not compatible with stuff?

^I'm probably wrong but I think RCT1 Gold is incompatible with drexler, but TTP can handle hacks/CS?

I'm fine with my original gold that I got when I was seven.

Uuuh yeah. I use it just fine.

There's a single disc containing the expansions, that's the one that's incompatible.
  • SSSammy%s's Photo
ahh the reason we're racist against it is because the expansions probably thought hitler was a cool guy.

    lol.

RCT Gold is fine (it's what I still have/use), it's RCT Deluxe that's the problem. RCT2 should work with trainers and CS regardless of version or region.

As a member of the absolute best, longest lasting, and only active RCT community left, I find this comment incredibly misguided.
  • MorganFan%s's Photo
Yeah, I tried using Deluxe, and it fucked up too much.

Well here's the issue I'm seeing... when someone wants to see a submission in RCT1, but they don't have the proper expansions, they're out of luck; but suddenly when they don't have the proper expansions for an RCT2 park, it's the submitter's problem.

And space for the extra objects shouldn't be an issue unless you guys are playing on 16gb hard drives or something. Last I checked, people toss around half a terabyte for pocket change. My objdata folder is only 187mb and I download plenty of parks with CSO.

I only mean to point out that RCT2 TTP solves the issue of compatibility. And it frees up the CD drive. And it's downloadable to any computer from just one purchase. And it can't be lost or misplaced or damaged. And it's the exact same game as what you're playing now, plus a few extra things that you wouldn't have to go to the trouble of converting.

    You're missing a point here.
It's not about lack of room on the HD.
It's because the game has his limitations.
If you reach about 4000 objects in the objdata folder, then you'll notice some issues in the scenario editor (scrolling the small scenery tab up ,makes it go down and vice versa) in some cases.
If you reach about 5000 items in the objdata folder, then you can't scroll the small scenery tab anymore (in all cases), thus you're unable to create a new scenario.

Now you know why we don't want or like WW and TT. ;)

...five THOUSAND objects? How much do you need, considering most CSO is colorable and you're limited to a few hundred in a scenario anyway? Who legitimately uses five thousand objects?

EDIT: I just ran some numbers. The maximum number of objects a scenario can contain is 720. Assuming the inconvenience occurs at around 4000 files, you could create 5 fully-maxed-out scenarios with plenty of room to spare, and each scenario having unique items from the other.

Considering that: it's likely you won't use all 720 (or even 400) of those objects; most CSO is colorable; and that there's certain objects that are popular and used as a base item set because they fit several themes well, just points out that anyone who reaches 4000 items in their objdata folder just doesn't keep it clean and won't get rid of stuff they'll never use, not to mention all of the exact duplicates you could have. There's even a program that will organize it for you, folks.

If you keep downloading new parks you'll easily hit the 5000 at some point.

Honestly it's pretty easy to explain.

The add ons for rct1 ARE USEFUL.

The add ons for rct2 are NOT USEFUL.

You said the fact we don't have the add ons holds back the advancement of the game.

We say everything rct2's add ons have is waaaayyy outdated and whoever uses it holds back the advancement of the game as much cooler stuff can be done nowadays with the custom objects users have created. Most of the stuff from the add ons doesn't even fit in with the normal rct graphics and looks weird.

So why would any of us spend 10 bucks on stuff none of us needs as it doesn't improve the game at all.

It's as simple as that and I don't think anyone here will ever buy the expansions again unless they're new.

well I have triple thrill pack, but I can understand people not having it. there is really nothing remotely realistic or interesting in tt/ww, and the stuff that is, has been converted into regular objects already. most of the stuff in it is incredibly tacky and would probably never look good in a park. and a lot of people here play rct with whatever disc they bought before they started playing seriously on here so if they happened to buy tt/ww then they use that but if they didn't they're not going to go out and get it if its unneccessary.

and for the record, there are actually a fairly decent amount of ww/tt parks released here, at least one spotlight (tilted acres but probably more- phantasmidisney whatever or something I think) and a fair handful of others too. although most of them (i think) have been converted into regular rct2 by now.

The irony in this pic is that you can actually skip the second disc and just use the 3rd after the 1st considering LL already contains CF/AA. It's just funny that they pressed a useless disc and didn't check what was going on them at all :p
