General Chat / 2014 in film

I hate superhero movies, which the general Hollywood public seem to love. One exception is maybe the Dark Knight, but that was because of Heath Ledger.  

Batman Begins was pretty good as well, and admittedly I enjoyed The Dark Knight Rises too. Christopher Nolan's doing... I don't know if it counts but Kick-Ass was also a great movie.

90% of the superhero movies are formula movies though. It's the same every damn time.

Don't forget sarcastic/cynical character for comic relief. And be sure to insert more fighting.

Well, I've probably (definitely) seen more than 40 movies in my life, but I've only seen about 5 in theaters in the last 6-7 years and I don't watch netflix or anything. Let's see: I've only seen Prince Caspian, Harry Potter 7, Inception, Avengers...plus a few others in theaters. Before that I don't remember. 

I never go to movie theaters.

I saw two new movies.

4,5/10 - Revenge of the Green Dragons (not a bad idea to make a movie about gang crime in the Chinese immigrant community, but definitely bad execution)

8,2/10 - Gone Girl (David Fincher does it again. This movie blew everyone in the theatre away, as expected. But the movie itself is always unexpected.)

I'll give this a bump...
 
Here's my current 2014 list:
1. Interstellar 9.9/10 - Blew me away.
2. Gone Girl 9.5/10 - Rosamund Pike.
3. X-Men: DOFP 9/10 - Best X-Men film by a landslide.
4. Captain America 2 9/10 - Marvel's best.

5. Edge of Tomorrow 8.6/10 Did not expect to like this.

6. 22 Jump Street 8.4/10 - By far the funniest film of the year.

7. Boyhood 8.3/10 - Life in 2 hours and 45 minutes.

8. The LEGO Movie 8.2/10 - Unexpected but awesomely wacky.

9. The Babadook 8.2/10 - Legitimately scary and my favorite horror since The Conjuring.

10. The Grand Budapest Hotel 8/10 - First Anderson film, can't say I was disappointed.

11. Dawn/Planets of the Apes 7.9/10 - Didn't quite live up to my expectations.

12. Guardians of the Galaxy 7.8/10 - Fun.

13. Oculus 7.5/10 Unique and thrilling.

14. Godzilla 7/10 - Still somewhat torn by this movie.

15. Snowpiercer 6.8/10 - I enjoyed it for what it was.

16. Noah 6.6/10 - Dull.

17. 300: Rise of an Empire 6.5/10 - YAY CGI Blood!

18. Neighbors 6/10 - I laughed once or twice.

19. Maleficent 5.7/10 - I fell asleep through parts of this one.

20. Amazing Spider-Man 2 5.5/10 - scenes were enjoyable but ultimately it sucked.

21. Transformers 4 4.5/10 - I still can't believe I sat through 3 hours of this.

22. The Nut Job 2.5/10 - Couldn't even tell you why I watched this...

I'm with CSW here. So far I've seen Guardians of the Galaxy in theater... And that's it.  I've watched Gravity and Rush at my house. 

 

Last few years I remember Watching Kick-Ass (thanks to Nin), The Avengers (In Theater) Argo, Skyfall, Casino Royale. Beyond that, Despicable Me, at least one of the Ironmans, Blindside I think. Maybe a few more.  Oh, whichever Batman was filmed in Chicago and had the Joker. Saw that. Last movie I saw in theaters besides Avengers was I Am Legend. 

God Help the Girl 8.2/10

Fun movie-musical, great songs, really catchy. Story was eh, but the actors blew me away with their voices.

 

Interstellar 10/10

Holy fuck. I was speechless for 10 minutes after I watched the credits, then I just spent the rest of the night lying on the ground outside looking at the stars. Everything about the film was incredible: Soundtrack, cast, acting, directing, plot, research, concepts, etc. Everything. I could go on and on. I regret not seeing it in IMAX but I'll take that as an excuse to go see it again. Brilliant.

I didn't like Interstellar that much. It had way to much story for the movie, had some weird moments (everything Casey Affleck did) and the casting of the last hope of manhood was pretty weird. Acting wasn't THAT impressive and the plot had some holes. I'd give it a 8/10, Inception was better.

I watched Godzilla yesterday and it was awful. Why where there giant mutated nuclear beatles and why is Godzilla suddenly the good guy? Why is there a character that is always in the background looking like he is watching two girls one cup?

Yeah destroying New York city in 1998 was pretty cool of him. 

It was 1998 Godzilla that raped the franchise's ideas, the 2014 Godzilla is a return to the tone of the original movies. The newer movie is definitely flawed, but I liked it for the reason above, as well as the cinematography, the use of silence and the excellent suspense in some scenes. In that aspects Godzilla 2014 destroys most similar action movies of the past decade - Pacific Rim, The Avengers, Man of Steel, any of the Iron Men, whatever. I enjoyed it.

1. 8.5/10 - Interstellar (not perfect, sometimes confusing (I'm lucky to understand the timetraveling in this I guess), but just way too damn interesting. Loved the concept, loved the visuals, loved the music, loved most, really)
2. 8.3/10 - Fury (best WW2 movie since... Das Boot maybe? Beautifully filmed, gritty, almost perfect)
3. 8.2/10 - Gone Girl (just a fantastic movie, keeps you on the edge of your seat)
4. 8.2/10 - The Wind Rises
5. 8.2/10 - The Grand Budapest Hotel
6. 8.1/10 - Boyhood
7. 8.0/10 - Her
8. 8.0/10 - Twelve Years a Slave

10. 7.7/10 - Nightcrawler (Awesome. Intense and entertaining. Beautiful shots. Cool urban scenery, constantly reminding me of GTA V)

27. 5.4/10 - John Wick (very predictable action movie - only the cinematography stood out positively. And maybe the The Raid-esque choreography.)

31. 4.5/10 - How to Train Your Dragon 2

32. 4.5/10 Revenge of the Green Dragons (nice idea, but it tries to be a lot of different things at the same time and fails at every one of them)

I saw The Theory of Everything last Friday and I was pleasantly surprised. The cinematography was a little repetitive and sometimes annoying, but Eddie Redmayne's acting was terrific. Not to mention he was perfect for the role; I can't think of anybody else that looks more like Stephen Hawking or could have pulled it off as well. Bravo to him. It's also ridiculously sad.
