    I think your merging problem might have been because you forgot to change the car ride to Boat Hire Mode.

    ^dont think so, never had that problem before and I never put the track into boat-hire-mode before. I got a solution though, should be build in episode 110.

    Also, in English we just call them gas pumps (which I think is a pretty clever idea on your behalf), at least over here in the States.
