General Chat / Jessica Lynch

The author of this is a bit upset and wanted to let go of some steam... Due
to some "foul language" reader discretion is advised.

Jessica Lynch. Hmm... where to start. For those who have absolutely no idea who she is, I'll break it down for you. Jessica Lynch is a Private First Class for the US Army. She was part of the 507th Maintenance Company which is based in Fort Bliss, TX. She was deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom. A convoy which took a wrong turn in Nasiriya (Iraq) and was ambushed by Iraqi soldiers. Jessica Lynch was taken prisoner. According to reports I've read, an Iraqi citizen went out of his way to give the US information to her whereabouts, which ended up being in a hospital. A team of US Army Rangers, Special Forces, Navy SEALs, Marines, and Air Force pilots risked their lives for her successful and safe return home. Jessica Lynch was beaten pretty severely. Her arm was broken, as was both her legs, along with a spinal injury. So now she's back home, safe. All is well, she's made it thru surgery and will be making a quick recovery. Turn on the TV, and there she is. America's Hero. A living, breathing, inspiration to every female in America.

America's hero has just received a FULL SCHOLARSHIP TO THE COLLEGE OF HER CHOOSING, STATE FUNDED!!! The media reports that she is being offered more than $8,000,000 in endorsement money. Wow. The radio announced that her parents are reading through Hollywood movie scripts. The Lynch family is also offered a free, all expense paid vacation in Maui by whatever hotel. What. The. Fuck. Someone please explain to me what magical thing this chic did to deserve all these hand outs?

Lets go over that again. FREE Ride thru College, $8 million in endorsements, Hollywood movie, free hawaii vacation.... all for fucking up and taking the wrong turn. What kinda shit is that. How can anyone justify rewarding someone for screwing up??? Ok ok ok, maybe I'm being a little bit insensitive. Let me back track a little bit. I totally realize that she has been through absolute HELL and BACK. Being tortured by Iraqi soldiers has got to be the worst feeling of pain imaginable. Being a female, it must have been twice as unpleasant, and I wouldn't doubt that she was raped. Yeah, that's gotta suck. There is a very good chance I will never ever, in my entire life have to endure the pain that she has been put through. I totally commend her and feel she truly deserves the Purple Heart that will be given to her, along with the praise and gratitude that her comrades and higher ups will give her. That being said, this has gone way too far. This chic signed on the same dotted lines as any other US Armed Forces member, including myself. She knew what she was signing up for, right?

    Or did she?

In an interview with her, she stated the only reason she joined the Army was for the Montgomery GI Bill, which was to take her through school so that she could become a teacher. She attempted to evade Iraq as best she could. I believe her direct quote was "This is not what I signed up for." Everyone bask in the glory of America's Newest Hero. Oh are we forgetting that she wasn't the only POW? What about all the other POWs that will come home, are they going to get a free ride too? Surely if a female POW received free college for being captured that a Male will as well. Did the soldiers of Vietnam or desert storm get to pick their free college? Nope. What about royalities from movies? Vacations? Better people have endured worse things and received no rewards. What about the thousands of men and women out there STILL FIGHTING because they didn't fuck up and take a wrong turn? What about the Rambo-like Special Ops person who has single handedly blown up 12 tanks with a butterknife and killed 42 elite republican guards using sand? What's he gonna get? How about we take all that college money, and spend it on care packages for deployed troop? Our American Hero has a Montgomery GI Bill which will cover most of her colletge, she'll survive, after all that's the reason she signed up for the Army. Just to add insult to fucking injury, it was reported on BBC that SHE WAS THE DRIVER. If this is in fact true, I think she should go to jail for murder. Not following directions is what gets you and your mates killed. Air Force pilot's have gone to jail for not following directions and blowing up the wrong target, what makes our New American Hero more special than they? Most of you will say its not her fault. I should be blaming the media and not her. Well you're absolutely right, the media is hyping this whole situation up. It becomes her fault the moment she accepts any of these handouts. She doesn't deserve them. Period. She did her job, whether she signed up for that part of her job or not. You don't get handouts for doing what you're supposed to do. She's no HERO. The real HERO'S are the ones still in Iraq fighting. The real hero is the Iraqi citizen who tipped the US off as to her wherabouts. Now that's a hero.

    ~written by Jonathan P. King, USAF SrA~ R.I.P. April 12, 2003

Author failed to mention how this hero held her ground by covering her
head under the sheets when her rescuers showed up on scene.

I totally agree with that article.

I totally agree with that article.

    Hello.

That's good ol' George W. working his magic...
    What a cunt...

I love these idiot kids who join the ARMY thinking they will never see combat. They never realize that once they sign that dotted line, they are signing their life away to the U.S. Armed Forces. It's a commitment stating that you are willing to die defending your country and it's assets. Unfortunately half of the current armed forces are just stupid reserves who don't know a the difference between a gun and a slingshot...

Fuck anyone who takes advantage of the GI Bill. I hope you get sent to a thirdworld shithole and die. I have uncles and grandfathers who fought viliantly during WWII, Vietnam, and Kosovo for the U.S. Now I see that the U.S. is losing men left and right in Iraq. I see that the math is correct due to the large amount of reserves that never thought they'd be in a war situation and are scared to death in the field and end up dying.

I know this is a fucked up statement, but whether you support the war or not, you know I am somewhat right. As far as this stupid bitch getting all of these things for being a POW for a few weeks...

Give me a fucking break. Kids who get raped and molested, now they deserve free rides, not this stupid bitch.
If I think of American heroes, I think of the CIA and FBI. The guys who's good deeds are never recognized.

    End Rant...

I have a record for being disastrously misinformed, but i'll say this anyway. I read a long article in the Guardian about the Jessica Lynch rescue, which basically explained how a lot of the supposed happenings had been exaggerated - the majority of the Iraqi soldiers had left, the doctors were treating her well and they had already tried to return her to American troops but had been shot at by said troops.

Whether this is true, I don't know, but I would think a respected broadsheet would not make something like this up and the sources were sound.

If that's the case, then I can understand this person's argument.
  • sircursealot%s's Photo
Agreed. This happens all the time, sadly. You die or get hurt, suddenly you're a hero. Sure, if you take a bullet for someone or die fighting, you are a hero, but oh, let's say...you fall down a well, you're a hero. Yay! Remember the crew of the Coloumbia, a few months ago? Well, people were going around saying they were brave heros and such. Sure, they did great things for their field, but nothing astounding. What makes them better than the living astronauts? Nothing. So if I jump out onto a busy highway, and get hit, injured or killed, I'm a hero? Bullshit. You ain't a hero till you bring victory to your cause. Saving a life, making a new discovery, etc. But there's nothing heroic in fucking up and wussing out. No matter how badly you're beaten.

    Just venting.

I like the GI Bill because I do believe that all the troops should get something for (cliche coming in 3...2...1) defending our country, or in some cases, fighting because W. told them to. I have nothing but respect for our Armed Forces. In my opinion, Lynch as well as the other POWs should get some kind of extra compensation because they were put through the worst...however, Lynch is getting just way too much, and all the other troops that have seen action sure as hell better be getting a cut of the pie too.
  • Ablaze%s's Photo
I agree with the article too. The heroes are the ones still standing, fighting for the country. They should be getting rewards, because they are probably badly injured but want to stand up for themselves and fight. If somebody has been captured and risked the lives of other members of the army why should that person get a reward for that? She has just put a team of US Army Rangers, Special Forces, Navy SEALs, Marines, and Air Force pilots to go out just to get 1 person.

    ??? Its fucked up.

Its a longstanding tradition in America to honor those fallen in battle, those you die in a courageous battle for freedom and what not, but I do agree its going a bit too far

we're not just honoring those who charge into battle with full knowledge they are going to die and die a heroic death, we start honoring those who are simply just stupid enough to stand up under fire, or accidentaly drive into an ambush, and even if they survive, how is getting raped and beaten by iraqis different from ebing raped and beaten by the KKK, I don't see any of these big memorials going out to all the black women they maimed, or how about the IRA in NOrthern Ireland, what about all the Americans they took, out

No only WOMEN in IRAQ get honored, because thats what gets to the people, its propaganda in the truest definition of the word.

Next time be a bit more clear. There's more than one George W.

    George Bush Sr.
    George Bush Jr.
    George Washington

Its this simple: the American media likes to keep interesting stories, so they chose to blow all this out of proportion in order for a few days of headlines.

Holy shit, I thought that too, and didn't notice it was Mike robbins until you posted something

Well, if I had known about this bullshit prior to the reading of the article it fucking would have been me, but I gave up watching the news two days into "Operation Iraqi 'Freedom' ", and haven't looked back since.

Now, why the fuck are you stealing my thingy Mike Robbins!? I chose that because everyone I picked, wound up becomming "popular", and I thought that would never catch on, bastard.

Of course seeing as 99.9% of what I post is negative (mainly because I don't agree with a lot of people here, and usually find it kind of pointless to post "I agree with you completely", whenever I do), it fits and shit. Whatever.

Go back to using Posted Image or Posted Image or whatever you were using before Mr. Robbins... or else!

I agree with the article. Frankly, it's unfair that her story was exaggerated and she was given all this coverage and hype and benefits while others just like her or who have been through worse will never have a story about them.

The media can be very sick at times, and this is one of many instances of that. It's nothing but propaganda. She was never shot or stabbed. She didn't "bravely hold her position" like we picture her. Just because she's a "cute" teenage girl who was "bravely rescued," she gets news and all this shit. And frankly, it's happened before. That's part of what screws up America.

Sad, really. I wonder if she feels like she deserves this, or if she's sort of reluctantly taking this.

i'll give her the benefit of the doubt and say she was reluctant.
keep the blame on US of A.

    1. What does Bush bashing have to do with anything in this topic? Or must the bitter liberals always take a cheap shot whenever they get the chance?

    2. Yes it's a big media oppertunity, and she deserves recognition for fighting for the US, but 8M in endorsements, free ride thru college, and free vacations are a little [lot] much. I wouldn't get too bent up or lose sleep over it, though.
  • Corkscrewed%s's Photo
And must the crazy conservatives always make stuff out to be like a liberal vs conservative war? :p What ever happened to working together?

Anyway, I place most of the blame on the media here.

Yes. And I was just inquiring. Since it seems like it's the media's fault and not Bush's.

    Hello.

It is mostly the media's fault, but Bush is still a douche bag.
