I've thought about that a lot actually. A launched rollercoaster soaring over the highway, connecting the main urban cores faster than any conventional train ever could, powered by solar panels or wind turbines next to the tracks...

Just got me a sweet gig as a lifeguard at SMU

Im currently studying physics and math and the goal is to keep doing that for as long as I can- stick through a PhD and postdoc slog with little pay so i can eventually do research and be a professor. Then i can live my aesthetic dream of being a dotty forgetful professor with patches on his jacket

My slightly alternate, more unrealistic dream is to be an astronaut though. Its something a lot of people say but so far my path very much coincides with the way to go about it, which is a semi conscious decision i suppose. That said, being an astronaut is a full time career, like for the rest of your working life, and i do really want to do research. Probably my ideal would be to be a mission specialist instead of career astronaut so i can do both.

That said, the iss is nearing its end of service well before im in a position to get up there. Russia has vague plans to reservice some of the modules but im not sure what nasa is into. Hopefully they get some budget back to keep space travel sustainable...

I used to want to be an architect which is maybe the classic ne alignment but i moved away from that a bit after i did some work experience there with a friend who was a seriously top tier architect, like couldnt hope to do better than him. And it mostly looked like running a business, and an extremely difficult thing to break into in any satisfactory way. So i went to the other stuff i was good at, although im still casually into architecture

Build your own rocket and fly to Europa or Mars. I want to see people going to both of those before I die.

...and an extremely difficult thing to break into in any satisfactory way.
My brief stint into architecture ended because of this. Couldn't convince myself that I could actually manage to end up making the things I wanted instead of just buildings houses or whatever for a living. Worked out in the end because I also hate math and how literal things have to be.

I feel like everyone at NE is either pursuing or has pursued architecture at one point or another lol.

@Morganfan- So you get to look at bikini clad rich college chicks all day? Yeh that does sound nice.

Exactly what I am aiming for at the moment. Jobs at the uni are rather sparse in the fields of study I am most interested in though, theoretical physics/cosmology. I think after the graduation it is a question about idealism (become researcher in a field where you can do mostly whatever you want) or money (in the economy).

Nope, I went from studying Economy to Northern American Studies (which explains my RCT skills)

I'm leaning towards astro stuff myself, at the moment. I can't seem to get as interested in the 'small shit' but I've still got 2 years on my degree so we'll see. No idea where in the spectrum of experimental-theoretical I'll end up though, I seem to get the idea that a lot of astro stuff is somewhere in between.

Interesting to read about your dream jobs.

I got a job interview tomorrow for a job as a maintenance technician. Hopefully it goes well.

As a theme park dork, my dream job would be entirely horseshit and wouldn't pay any money at all. If I hit the lottery I'd probably work weekends making minimum wage as a ride op. Since it's a dream job and I can be ultra-specific I'd pick the Sky Ride at Cedar Point. I always thought Von Rolls were cool and since it goes down for wind so often you can get cross trained on some coasters.

Unfortunately I need a job that actually pays me, so I work for a financial planning company. I actually really love my job and the people I work with, but I'd rather be catching Sky Ride cabins. lol

Dream job would be a musician. As in, one that tours and gets paid enough live off of it. Getting there, hopefully.

Right now I work in finance. I trade stocks all day for rich people.

My dream job would have been to lay out and plan the United States Interstate Highway System. But since they already did that about 50 years ago, I think I'll have to stick with solving local transportation issues

    Screw you, Robert Moses!

Pretty much. I'm excited. Mostly for the money but yeah

I've worked for Disney for several years now, and while not my dream job per se, it's given me a lot of opportunities that I couldn't be more appreciative of. I started as a lifeguard at Disney's Vero Beach resort after being a traveling musician with my band for a few years. Never expected to stay that long, but I ended up working my way up to Recreation Coordinator and then into HR as the head of resort wide training. After being there for a number of years, I then got hired by Disney Cruise Line as the Guest Communications Manager. I started on the Dream out of Port Canaveral to the Bahamas, and more recently have been splitting my time between the Magic and Wonder as the swing (covering the other's vacations). There are only 5 of us for the 4 ships, so we rotate a lot. I recently just completed the 14 day transatlantic cruise on the Magic from Florida to Boston to Canada to Ireland and ending up in England. (Tried to visit Steve in Boston, but he was selfish and decided to move apartments on the day I was in town.) They flew me straight from London to Vancouver where I am now doing the Alaskan itineraries for the remainder of the summer season. (Currently sitting at a random cafe in juneau right now leeching off the WiFi lol)

Basically I'm responsible for all graphic design, mobile app content, printing, signage, digital screens, and the creation of the printed daily 'Navigator'. I directly report to the Cruise Director in order to update the schedule with activities each day, as well as all other on board departments to ensure their hours and promotions are correctly advertised each day. Easier said than done, as I usually work up to 5 days in advance and always have issues with certain managers being lazy and not updating their content. Additionally, things get really difficult when we do new itineraries, as the activities and hours and information constantly change on a day to day basis due to the varying locations and conditions. Thankfully these Alaskan cruises are relatively easy, as nothing much changes from week to week. While my girlfriend hates my guts for being gone for months at a time, I'm thankful for the opportunity to travel and see the world on Disney's dime. (I made friends with the Port Adventure managers, so I get to do whatever tours I want to do for free).

Ideally I'd love to be in imagineering, but it's extremely difficult to get into. I've looked into the DCL shoreside offices as well as various media roles within the company. Still currently deciding on my next move though, as I can only get so far without any college education haha. I'm going to apply for some internships with various themed entertainment companies when I return home this fall to hopefully gain more experience and add to my resume. So who knows where I'll end up next:)

I think the job you've got now is still the envy of lots of people on this site.

It's great, I'm not going to lie. But it's without a doubt the most difficult job I've ever had to do. I put in over 90 hours last week. I get paid salary - not hourly. Take from that what you will haha.

Say whut :o   I hope that's a big fat salary they pay you...
