What are you favourite underground bands/artists? Name one and type a small description. Only one band per post.

Skindred - You may think that Reggae and Metal shouldnt be put together. Well your wrong. This band fuses the two genres together with great skill. Benji's vocals can switch from melodic to metallic while the riffs kick some serious ass. The band are continuasly touring Uk and Europe and I think they played a few gigs over the pond in the USA. Just waiting for a second album... Songs to hear - "Babylon" and "Bruises"

Hell Razah - not really a band, but more of a solo underground hiphop artist and also a member of 'Sunz a Man', the WuTang inspired eastcoast rap group. Bangin' tracks such as This iz for my G's and Whether You Like it or Not

This guy is incredible. He's being recognized for keeping a '90's' style of rap, the good old years. Far from commercialism, he doesn't front, he speaks nothing but the truth. He has lots of hot beats and a great flow. There is actually a rumor going around that he's being scouted by Shady/Aftermath.You can sample his debut album, "A Sample And A Drum Machine", Here. Many people refer to his debut album as an instant classic, mostly because it is.

    K-Os
He is gaining tons of popularity world wide for being the most refreshing hip-hop artist ever. His lryrics and beats are like nothing you've ever heard. "You said you shining, but that really means you reflect/ I absorb the light within my poures and then connect" is just the beggining of what you can expect. He has a great voice for singing, esspically the chorus'. He is definetly worth checking out. His debut album, Exit, is a classic.

    Kamau
Really worth checking out. He doesn't have a full CD out yet, but he does have an EP (which you can only buy on the internet). His lyrics are incredible, the best I've ever heard. If you want more information on him, visit the "Rock vs. Hip Hop" topic.

I have a lot more, but these are the current best.

Mohammed Rafi - He only has one song called "Jaan Pehechaan Ho". The best Bollywood piece of art you will find any where. It doesn't matter what kind of music you prefer, but you WILL like this, I guarantee it.. anyone would, and I'm not just saying that. It's completely awesome. :)

    progressive forever!

    Liquid tension experiment
    Marillion
    Fates Warning
    Queensryche
    Savatage
    Dream Theater
    Trans-Siberian Orchestra
    Gamma Ray

funny thing about gamma ray, it is actually what is believed to be the inspiration for the creator of the guilty gear series (fighting games for the playstation2).
Here is a site with some of their songs: http://www.gamma-ray.com/
i personally think their vocals needed some work, but their drumming and guitaring aint too shabby (still peanuts compared to john petrucci of dream theatre, that guy is god).

What i call underground is gabber music. Right now Evil Activities is my top #1. Their tracks are just wonderful. Very melodic, intros arent too long, every track is totally different than the other one.

    call it......................

Ouch, I haven't heard of any of these bands..!?

I think that's kind of the idea ;) Go download some of Dallas Orbiter's stuff, though, because it's fun. Also check out the stuff Blitz linked to - it isn't that bad :p

They're not exactly 'underground', but some of the new music here in the UK is damn funky and i've actually started listening to the radio again to check it out:

Franz Ferdinand - i'm not a girl, but i'd still dance to it ;)
Keane - damn piano gets me every time
    Snow Patrol - endlessly singable

Deano must be having the time of his life at the moment, music wise :D
  • Rage%s's Photo
    Ok not exactly underground....

    Propagandhi
Tracks - Back to the Motor League, White Proud Stupid
I started listening to these guys last summer. I would highly recommend them to fans of Anti-Flag, Pennywise etc. I didnt like them the first time I heard them but their music grew on me and now I cant enough but maybe thats just me....

the only band i really like, and, can't seem to find anywhere (except the internet), is 'stars'. they're from montreal, and, um, make really pretty pop music. a bit like morrisey, meets momus, with a bit of slowdive, and, a great deal of the happiness these bands lack. pretty music, but, i think i could find it if i looked hard enough. why? it was in the top 10 of the local paper! so, it has to be available locally, where, though?

also, on! air! library!, but you can find their records, well, one, which is a split with the album leaf (who may not be very well known either, actually, but, they toured with american analogue set, and, recorded an album with members of sigur ros, and, the mum twin which left mum, which will be comming out soon, i hope).

honestly though, i have no idea how popular anything is anymore. i have lost all touch with such nonsense. i just listen to pretty music, because, it is pretty.

    anywho.

i blame borders, and, best buy. i go in there, with all my indie snobberishness (perhaps that isn't a word, perhaps it doesn't matter), and find buttloads of slowcore (low), sadcore (arab strap), postrock (wendy + carl), mathrock (aloha), shoegaze (mira), emo (rainer maria), idm (four tet), and, other things i never knew you could find at a chainstore. it scares me, really.

i also found out 99.99% of all my most favorite so-underground-it's-scary goth bands, are signed to massive major label contracts in germany! i want to move to germany! bowie did, mum did, so, why not?

oh yeah, sparks! they've been wondrously obscure for the past couple of decades (four, actually), producing the best glam, newromantic, and, at the present, strange, electronic-classical-pop, with a newwave sensibility, and, a distinct hint of both andrew loyd webber, and, tim burton, you'll ever likely to hear!
  • Rage%s's Photo

Franz Ferdinand - i'm not a girl, but i'd still dance to it ;)

My english teacher know every band member through her daughter. You know their first gig was in a girl's bedroom, that was my english teacher's daughter's bedroom :D My claim to a claim to fame.
