Don't like the idea. I'm not sure why, but it just seems odd. And unnecessary, that amount of money could, like, clear 3rd world debt or rebuild iraq or something. -

I dont like elevators, nver have never will. They dont feel safe to me. I can imagine this, and im with deano, it sounds quite stupid and useless really. Would be a great target for terrorist too. -

This story is pretty hold; it was first published on one of those Popular Science type mags a year or two ago. It's a pretty cool idea that actually could work a lot better than most people imagine. The hard part would be building it. After all, if it can survive going through the ionosphere, the chances of something hitting and breaking it are pretty small. Anything that would break the shaft would also do pretty good damage to the Earth anyway. -

Sounds pretty cool but I don't think it will be up and running by 2020, my guess is not in any of our lifetimes. Also, how would they build it through the atmosphere? If I remember correctly, it gets pretty damn cold up there. -

Waste of money. Although it sounds pretty cool, I think we have more important things to spend that much money on. -

WTF? All that heat is caused by friction with the air. Yes wind resistance can cause heat when you're traveling at about 10 times the speed of sound!how would they build it through the atmosphere? If I remember correctly, it gets pretty damn hot up there.
The SR-71 Blackbird spy plane had to have a titanium body to put up the with the heating from 2 hours at mach 3. Something that isn't moveing through the atmosphere anyfaster then the earth spins wouldn't have enough speed to really heat up.
If we could come up with an economical way to build it I would be all for it. As it stands at the moment we're screwed since the only good way to do it requires a large body in space to attact to so that it's momentum can work as a counter-balance to earths gravity. The problem would be lowering a cable from that since as it is steel cable couldn't hold its own weight vertically for more than a few miles and when you need about 200 of those 5,000 feet units it just doesn't work.

Hot? It gets cold you dumbfuck... that's why mountains have SNOW on them.how would they build it through the atmosphere? If I remember correctly, it gets pretty damn hot up there.

People need to actually read the story before posting about it... -

You've been to SPACE! Wow!If I remember correctly, it gets pretty damn hot up there.
Anyway, yes, I remember reading about this in the PS magazine as well Corkscrewed. I personally think it too as a waste of money, and an extremely high on list target for terrorists. I don't see it really happening. And if it does, build a coaster off it. -

"Edwards believes a space elevator offers a cheaper, safer form of space travel that eventually could be used to carry explorers to the planets."And unnecessary, that amount of money could, like, clear 3rd world debt or rebuild iraq or something.
So, according to this guy, we would actually be saving money on this in the long run. Theoretically, I suppose. I guess problems could occur.
Anyway, I like the idea, as far-fetched as it may seem. -

So I read the Popular Science artical a year ago. yippy. The problem would be lowering a cable from that since as it is steel cable couldn't hold its own weight vertically for more than a few miles and when you need about 200 of those 5,000 feet units it just doesn't work.

The meathod of construction still doesn't exist, nor does the material to build it from. -

I think the idea is pretty neat...but how fast would the elevator travel? Would it be like a week trip? Or upwards of a few months? -

that would make sense, thats not how we do things here.Don't like the idea. I'm not sure why, but it just seems odd. And unnecessary, that amount of money could, like, clear 3rd world debt or rebuild iraq or something.

PM did an article on this like a year ago, said they would need self building carbon nano tubes. Me, I don't like the idea of any nano technologies that build themselves. Ever read PREY By Michael Crichton? ( I think that's how his name's spelled)
Besides, it also seemed require catching an Asteroid, and most likely bringing it closer to earth to put it in orbit. Real smart, The pilot gets one vector wrong and we're all SCREWED.
Only when you're going throughit at several thousand miles an hour. By the way, what's the name of this school that needs it's copyright 1400 books replaced?the thermosphere some atmoshere thats high up gets really hot. I learned that in skoolÂ
Also, they wouldn't use cables, probably some cog rail type system, (like at pikes peak) Or a magnetic system (with the car wrapped around to the track real good.)
