Somewhat interesting...yes...but dumb as fuck. Are we as a nation just bored and looking for something to piss away money on? I could use a few things and so could a handful of other countries. Who the fuck would want to be trapped in an elevator for that long anyways? Damn, i'd go insane, unless they gave me a large supply of beer and an attractive woman to travel with...who needs the mile high club -

Hey guys
Waste of money?
There is actually one hell of a lot of money being poured into this. It would save vast amounts of money once one was built. The cost to lift anything into space at the moment by shuttle / rocket is momentous. Once an elevator was up the costs would fall perhaps 100fold.
The whole thing would revolutionize the space age. For the first time getting up would be easy. Space exploration would also become vastly cheaper and more viable. All the money nasa and whoever else wastes on missions would be saved and used on other things as they would no longer need to spend so much on boosters and crap.
However while I'll sing its praises till the cows come home I don’t see one being built for a good while yet. We can do it, that’s not the problem. Although Production of carbon nano tubes (very thin and very very strong tubes) is nowhere near high enough quite yet. It's just the whole human I don't believe that will work barrier.
The point that you would need a big body up there is correct but again nothing that can't be achieved within 2 shuttle flights.
Anyway my point is it's much more possible than the GP think. And it would save much much more money than it would cost.
There was infact a big conference on it the other day. will go look up the results. The russians and Chinese are also looking into building the things. There was a big artical over here in the Bangkok Post about the chinese projects.
Anyway better run

Of ALL the ideas that people have thought of, THAT has to be the most retarded thing I have ever heard of. -

Your an idiot. I would like to see your imagination come up with such a complex idea such as this one.Of ALL the ideas that people have thought of, THAT has to be the most retarded thing I have ever heard of.
Now that I look at it, this is actually quite good. Definetly not a waste of money. Anything towards space exploration is worth it. I can not believe some people thought the Mars mission was a waste of money. Understanding more and more of our universe is what we should be doing. Living out lives without doing anything towards exploration just makes us pointless in life. This space elevator will further enhance this. There is definetly life out there. Anything who thinks otherwise is ignorent. There are millions upon billions of glaxies, each containing millions upon billions of stars. If there is no planet in all those galaxies that contains a suitable environment for life, then I'll be damned. But I am just ranting now. All I want to say is this is definetly not a waste of money nor any other space mission that will either further enchance our technology or understanding of the universe. -

Mercury is the closest to the sun yet on the dark side it gets to negative degrees. -

Right now I think the cost to carry a pound of cargo into space is $44,000, with this elavator they could lower that to around $100, this is if I remember the Popular SCience article right.
It very much isn't a waste of money. -

IF they build it, fine, but I'll follow NIMBY on this one (Not in my back yard) I don't need a million ton carbon tube tower falling into my living room.
good idea, but it's kind of on the line between feasible and un feasible. especially if it will rely on the Bush Administration for any help (Then it's completely screwed).
