Not that I think Bush is a genius, but I couldn't have answered that question either... -

You're also NOT the leader of the "Free World", and EXPECTED to be knowledgeable in world affairs. HE is. -

Mark: What do you think tribal sovereignty means in the 21st century, and how do we resolve conflicts between tribes in the federal and state govern-
Bush: Yeah. Tribal sovereignty means that... some. (mumble) You're a... you're a. You've been given sovereignty and you're... viewed as a sovereign, entity.
* Audience Laughs
* Bush nods at Mark.
Bush: And, therefore, the relationship between the federal government and... tribes, is one between s- sovereign entities. -

All I want to say is that no politician has ever not been stumped in a debate or confrence or whatnot. They all have statements that contradict what they used to think or whatever. I am just saying that no one is perfect and I can guaruntee you I will find a clip in 5 min of Kerry looking like a complete idiot.

Yes CPF....but DUBYA has an AMAZING record of incredibly STUPID things that have come out of his mouth. Moreso than perhaps any other high ranking US political figure...in fact the closest second I can draw on from memory is Dan "Potatoe" Quayle, and well...look at who was in office along side him....makes ya think doesn't it?
Now go and ask your sister what I just said. Seeing as how she is so politically astute. -

Sovereignty is the freedom and ability to govern oneself. You can think of it as almost akin to independence. Coutries are referred to as sovereign nations, meaning they can govern themselves through self rule, as opposed to be controlled by another nation (i.e. through colonization or dictatorship or whatever).
Complete sovereignty = independence, but Bush was asked about Native American sovereignty. You may know that Indians have their own tribal committees that make a lot of ruling decisions. They can't do anything they please, of course, because United States rule supercedes it, but they still have the power to make basic rules and laws for themselves that an average person could not do.
Similarly, states can be said to enjoy some form of sovereignty in that they have legislatures that can pass laws and such, as long as those rules don't conflict with federal laws and the Constitution. -

(or at least to answer the "simple" questions.)
Time to go to the restrooom before I pee my pants.

CPF, surely you can't defend Bush's complete lack of knowledge regarding the issue he was questioned about. It was really quite sad to watch because it was so obvious he had no idea what the question pertained to in the first place. There is a big difference between getting your words mixed up (as in the case of the harming America speech, which to me is hilarious but very forgiveable) and giving the entire Native American population a collective slap in the face by obviously having no familiarity with the issues confronting that sector of the American population. I remember the first time Bush ran for president and when questioned, he didn't even know the name of the Canadian Prime Minister. I don't expect every American to know this, but surely if you are running for President you should make a point of knowing these things. As a Canadian, I found that very insulting and haven't had a shred of respect for your president since. I'm not telling you who to vote for, as many people vote for party not for person, but call a spade a spade and an idiot an idiot. Bush has only one agenda and that is looking out for #1 and he'll use fear and rhetoric as much as he can to get himself re-elected. Most unqualified American president ever...I say yes. -

^Indeed. After footage like this, I dunno how any self-respecting Republican (in or out of office, even ye teens here), can stand up for the guy. Even most of you can BS an answer to that question without using the word 4-5 times to define itself; I see it all the time. If there's one thing I learned in English class (nevermind common sense in general), it's that you don't use the word in question to define what it means. It's a circular reference if you will, and you're no better than where you started.
In Bush's case, it'd look less embarrassing if he had just said "I don't know."
How hard is that?

Ya know, as I was watching the footage and listening to the question, I was like, "oh shit... he's screwed." That was definitely a tough question... but the way Bush handled it was even worse than I could have ever imagined!
At least it made for some hilarity. Kerry should play it as his campaign video.

Whether or not Kerry can answer the question has nothing to do with Bush answering the question (which clearly he couldn't). Seriously, there are more than 2 candidates. Vote for who you want in office, not the guy who isn't as bad as the other guy. And if there are no candidates you would want in office, than perhaps it's time you used your voice to speak for your values because I guarantee there's at least one other person out there who will be grateful that their voice is finally being echoed. I know you're probably in High School or something, but it's a general sentiment not specific advice for you (although it applies there as well). A big deal is made of that fact that only half of the eligable population votes in this country. I bet a lot of those people would vote if they saw a candidate that they really believe in. Maybe big business is the only one choosing candidates for public office - if so it's because they have the confidence and the power to make their voice heard. It's about time the rest of us start staking our claim in the future of this country too. If you really believe in your values, than you should stand up for them and allow yourself to be questioned. I've probably used this quote before cause it's a favorite of mine. Socrates said that it is the punishment of those who will not rule to be ruled by those less capable than themselves. If you are unhappy with your leaders, than you need to become a leader yourself.
