I just watched that save again - definitely not a save, when it hit him he's still on the bloody floor! And I have a picture from the papers as well if you don't believe me.
Petrov - dida did far worse 2 years ago in terms of cheating on penalties. -

It's not just schools. You can find no hint that there is even a tournament called the European Cup, let alone any news about the final, on espn.com this evening. There, with that being said, I lay the rest of this screw-up on my wonderful high-school education, which continues to enlighten me with the most philisophical subjects, the purest of classics, and gives me the greatest sense of the world as a whole.
Anyway I watched from 90 minutes on at school today with...my English teacher, of all people. He is from the UK and had the game taped, but didn't know the outcome yet...so when I asked "Did you hear about the game in Istanbul yesterday" he almost flipped out. Luckily nothing was given away. It was pretty entertaining to see his reaction to Dudek's save at 118 minutes.
European soccer is pretty cool. Far more entertaining than most American sports. -

In the Korean/Japanese world cup of 02, South Korea retook a penalty where the keeper wasn't even half what Dudek was off his line...also ac shoulda re-took the saved penalties...how far was dudek off his line!!!
Such a lack of consistancy. =[ -

You just don't know when to drop it do you. I don't know what paper you get but it wouldn't be this picture would it...I just watched that save again - definitely not a save, when it hit him he's still on the bloody floor! And I have a picture from the papers as well if you don't believe me.
It can't be though because it blatantly shows Shevchenko less then 2 yards from Dudek and Dudek still on the floor (well duh! he just saved his header) and his arms out stretched instinctively. Oh and what happend? He saved the shot! But of course it was just a bad miss wasn't it.
And as if that's not enough there is a little colum to the right of it, that you can't see in the picture, and the first paragraph reads:
"GORDON BANKS rates Jerzey Dudek's double save from Andriy Shevchenko as high as his stop off Pele."
Also, just incase you were going to try and resume your argument that he hit the penalty straight at him...
'Cos Dudek would obviously want to stretch his arm out to full length if it was straight at him wouldn't he!
And just to add salt to the wounds Bruce Grobbelaar said he thinks Dudek did a better job then him in the penalty shootout AND Poland legend Jan Tomaszewski said "The double save Dudek made from Andriy Shevchenko at the end of extra-time was world class and he won the European cup with his penalty saves.
But of course you could have scored it and you know better then all these ex-proffesionals.
Save yourself more embarrasment and drop it. -

Of course everyone's going to praise him. The fact is, the first save off the header was absolutely incredible, top class, the second the ball was hit at him. As a goalkeeper, I know that in order to pull off the best saves you need the shots that allow you to do that. If the ball is heading right at the furthest reach of a jump and stretch of your hand, for instance, that's when you're going to pull off a good save. Or perhaps even when the ball is hit straight at you and luckily enough deflects over the bar. Anyway the argument wasn't whether or not it was a good save, it was whether or not it was a poor miss. However you look at this - and you cannot deny this - Shevchenko missed from two yards with only a realtively small goalkeeper in the way. You cannot say that was a reactionary save - human reaction times do not allow for him to react quickly enough. Yes, he'd recovered and positioned himself well following the incredible save from the header. It was a good save, put together with the save a second earlier an outstanding bit of goalkeeping. That doesn't however mean it wasn't a poor miss.
As for the penalty, if you take out the keeper completely and think where he's hit that, it's utter shit - closer to the middle than southgate's and at the perfect height to save - as penalty saving is one thing I do very well, I can inform you that goalies want the ball at that height because it's where their arms naturally stretch to when jumping. That Dudek managed to save it, even though he'd gone the wrong way, shows how bad the penalty actually was.
Just to emphasize what I mean, are you saying that it wasn't a miss? From two yards out? Here's all his options:
I'd expect the "best striker" in the world to score from there along one of those red lines. All he needed was a cool head and a side foot into the far corner. -

It was a great save.
What is jerzy dudeks job ? To get in the way of the ball. What did he do....He got in the way of the ball....
Therefore it is an AMAZING SAVE

Exactly ^.
Deano you change your point of argument with every post. First you said Shevchenko was utter shit, then he was just shit in that game, then Dudek didn't make a good save, then Shevchenko made a bad miss. I don't know where you are going with this and I don't think even you know.
Shevchenko isn't utter shit.
He was not the worst player in that game.
He did not make a terrible miss.
Dudek made some great saves.
What part out of that can you not understand?
Doesn't the fact everyone on these boards and in the world of football disagrees with you worry you slightly?
Enjoy your blissful ignorance. -

Ok, I admit I said he was utter shit on the spur of the moment - about half an hour after the game, I was still really hyped up. It's been annoying me for some time how everyone says he's so good yet I've never seen him impress. Wednesday was definitely another example from my point of view. The one sentence out of those that I disagree with is "he did not make a terrible miss". The best striker in the world does not miss from 2 yards, surely you must agree with that? He should have scored that. And I personally don't think his penalty was up to much either, for the reasons I outlined in my post. Where I disagree with Scarface is that he didn't get in the way of the ball - he couldn't possibly have reacted that quickly - the ball hit him. His positioning was amazing given that he'd just made a save but the ball hit him.Shevchenko isn't utter shit.
He was not the worst player in that game.
He did not make a terrible miss.
Dudek made some great saves.
What part out of that can you not understand?
Petrov, I support Lewes FC, thanks. And was supporting Liverpool on the night. However much I tried to support Milan for purposes of banter in the bar, I just couldn't cheer when they scored and took off my Milan shirt at half time. There's just too much english blood in me I guess. -

Okay, I admit, Shevchenko should of scored and on any other night he would of, it was Liverpools destiny to win the CL this season and Milan were plagued with bad luck, Dudeks save being the epitome of these circumstances.
Of course, I'm not taking anything away from Liverpool, but Milan didn't deserve to lose on 15 minutes of football. Though thats why football is such a beautiful game, even the impossible can be achieved.
Being a Milan & a Newcastle fan, you can imagine how devastated this season been on my nerves! It's been awful. -

Oh, and on an entirely seperate note, Kaka' was simply outstanding when Crespo was on the field. For me, that performance affirmed his status as Europes best youngster. I mean, the pass for Crespo's second gave me a hard on. So good. -
