This thread is to take a step back, ask "Why did they do that?", or say "Whoa, that's really cool!", and embrace some of the parks of the past.
I downloaded a lot of old RCT1 parks last night and have since taken a look at all of them. I found some really neat little quirks and fun things in each and I've made a conglomeration of screen shots and would like to take the time to point out things and ultimately show some apreciation for our RCT roots. However, this is just a tiny sample of each park, and an even more minute sample of pool of old parks there are out there. So yeah, have a look, read my comments, and have fun!
Conglomeration (1024 x 1538, 1.002 KB)
A--A nice helix, it's weird because it looks like it is continuous.
B--Glass roof over a UFO ride.
C--Screwy pyramid hack. Pretty cool, wish more people did stuff like this with the Hex Editor (I think), but more subtle.
D--there is no D
E--This is a very interesting concept...
F--An old use of coster-tecture with some interesting scenery choices around it.
G--Interesting. Pretty cool looking if you ask me.
H--Ed, why on earth is there a diving board (a very good looking one at that) on some random rocks in the middle of the water?
I--SPIDERMAN! That is sooo cool.
J--I found this bush to be an interesting quirk. It's so random.
K--For some reason those bone archways really work there. Pretty neat how they do.
L--I really liked these "holes," if you will.
M--That mess is just.. well, amazing.
N--Interesting land choice.
O--The way the wood turns is pretty neat looking, also note the scenery underneath the drop, kinda odd.
P--I like how the pyramid is built up on the land like that. The whole screen is pleasant.
Q--AIRTIME!!
R--Thought it was cool that he continued the stream underground...
S--Wierd name for supports.
T--Thought this was sweet looking.
See if you can figure out which parks the screens are from. I was going to put that down, but it's taking long enough putting this together as it is... -

Parks like these just arent made anymore...
I recognise some of them, like Blitz´and RRPs park wars thing, and Eds area in that old NE collabo. I love those parks.
About screen "S", I believe that name is the result of some hacking that tricks the game to let you exceed the ride limit or something. -

Yeah, I remember it happening to me when I used the Saved Game Modifyer way back when. I thought it was odd that they didn't bother to rename it. -

"Ed, why on earth is there a diving board (a very good looking one at that) on some random rocks in the middle of the water?"
Well, if you were stuck on a tropical island in the middle of nowhere, once you got sick of eating coconuts, and playing badminton with the monkeys, etc -- wouldn't you build a diving board out on the rocks? I know I would.Actually, I think somebody told me once they found a diving board just like that. Or maybe I just dreamed about it. It's some weird stream of consciousness thing I do when I'm theming parks.
What park is P from? -

I love how you got the picture of the spiderman logo in the flowers, that was just the icing on the cake for that design. Great coaster by the way, that was.
Also, interesting topic...we should have more like these. -

I've always been a fan of the "SACF Helix" myself. You can find it on almost all of his wooden coasters....

i use the helix that Gigaforce posted quite a lot. (check the woodie in Arnos Springs and the screens of VDF)
I think the SA helix is awesome tooahhh the good old LL days.....

Hehe both of those are cool (although I prefer the set-up on timber wolf's far helix to the one in that screen, giga).
A nice variation on the js helix: -

You mean like this Cg?
(note a very old pic and it doesnt look like this in the final version)
A helix im using in VDF on a woodie -

You know, aside from the SACF helix, I'm really not a fan of helixes on rollercoasters. I don't think they're very fun to ride through, kind of monotonous. They have aesthetic appeal when you look at them from an isometric perspective, but I tend to avoid using them myself. Even the SACF helix, while cool to look at with that added vertical asymetry, probably wouldn't be all that fun to ride through. -

They might not be fun to ride, but they look brilliant. Timber Wolf just looks...well, wow. -

Actully if they're done right helixs can be quite fun. Just look at all the positive reviews of Beast out there. I would say the positive/vertical-G build up of a helix works particularly well to launch you out into airtime causing hills of some sort, like on Cornball Express. It whips into the helix giving airtime, then it crushes you with ever-increasing force against the side of the train before breaking back into straight and throwing you skyward over the ending bunny hops.
And admit it, in rct helixs are pretty. I like them, but I don't use them all that much.

[While we're on the topic of helices] One time, when I was bored, I made a woodie with 3 helices just like the one in GigaForce's post, but much smaller.
That SACF helix looks cool.
