Really, let's be honest, that post is complete bullshit. This is not bashing, alright, but seriously. "A new Coldplay?" I think not. They have NOT derived from their usual formula. The songs are still the same as they wrote them on Parachutes. Really, there is no progress in their three albums. If they want to have any credibility, they need to change things up, if they want to stay successful and keep going platinum, keep it the way they are. Sadly, they are chosing the latter. Their music just can't hold my interest for long, considering everything sounds the same.
If you would actually care to listen to the album particular tracks such as "White Shadows" and "Talk", you would hear a few other influences. Such as Electronica and Dance. I'm sorry, but on X&Y there is no song that sounds remotely like Don't Panic, or Shiver, or In My Place even. The instrumentation and influences are hugely different on this album. -

Yes but in an attempt to change their sound, Coldplay have lost focus on what actually matters; the melodies and hooks.
Hell, I heard Fix You the other night, aswell as Speed of Sound, where are the fucking hooks? Fix You seemed like a poor attempt at a post-rock formula and Speed of Sound is just non-descript to the point of banality. -

http://www.pitchfork.../09.shtml#radioIt's good to see a group working so hard to create something different, unlike certain other English groups, who are content to stick their platinum-selling formulas. But we're not naming any names...cough cough...COLDPLAY! Oh weird, what a strange sneeze!

I've decided that it's ok. OK in the same way that Push The Button is ok.
The best function it serves is to be my first album beginning with the letter 'x'. -

Calling my post bullshit is just ignorant of you. Seriously. Adding a constant synth line to the backround of all the songs on the album doesn't count as "new instumentation" or infuences in "electronica and dance."Really, let's be honest, that post is complete bullshit.

I still don't realise why people can't just appreciate music is subjective. There is no "best album ever" for instance, everyone's opinion is different. Having said that, do remember that it is extremely cool not to like X&Y, because, Coldplay are like, commercial now. -

Now? NOW?Having said that, do remember that it is extremely cool not to like X&Y, because, Coldplay are like, commercial now.
Don't you realise that lots of people who aren't keen on X&Y still like A Rush... quite a lot? Coldplay have been 'commercial' (if you mean famous/successful) since Parachutes, and that doesn't stop people from liking that album...
Bloody hell. -

Discussions about things like music would be a lot less interesting if everyone was being PC and putting "IMO" after every single statement.I still don't realise why people can't just appreciate music is subjective. There is no "best album ever" for instance, everyone's opinion is different.
But of course, that is just my opinion, and everyone has different opinions, so everyone should just keep their opinions to themselves and no one should discuss anything ever again. -

Oooh, so Chris Martin found a DRUM MACHINE! big deal. Just because they put a synth here and there doesn't change the fact that they're still resting on their laurels with boring drone. you can't honestly tell me that they're "taking risks" with this album?Really, let's be honest, that post is complete bullshit.

I definetly hear a move towards the more colorful end of Postrock and Electronic (say, Stereolab, Cornelius, Sea and cake, Nobukazu Takemura, etc)... BUT... only extremely barely. I could easily forgive people for missing it, really.
Not sure what I think about the album, really. A certain part of me (the kind which likes those 4 bands mentioned earlier) like it better, but most of me is like you guys, all "Parachutes was a great, if light-weight, pop album, but this is just crap". -

How is it ignorant? There are other things that make it have electronica influences in terms of instrumentation. For example, a drum beat, or the type of effects used. Even the harmonies at time at a little to make it electronica. And furthermore - they use Dance patterns. They even used a dance riff from a Kraftwerk song.

I'm sure every artist has copied another one. Except of course, the pioneers of genres. But for bands such as Coldplay, they may look to artists for inspiration, in terms of rhythm, harmonies, and in Coldplay's case, Riffs.Oh, so now they're ripping off other artists?

I've got it!! Sometime between A Rush of Blood and X&Y, Chris Martin was taken on a remarkable journey of inner discovery when some guy called Rufus took him back in time - to the 80s - to teach him an important lesson about what really matters in life. Because it turns out, Coldplay's third album is more important than anything - sometime in the next five years, Coldplay will end third world hunger, nuclear proliferation, and unite all of mankind in the blissfully bland and pristine land of peace and monotony.
Of course, "Rufus" was actually a deranged fan who lost his mind trying to headbang to The Scientist, and his "time machine" was an old Reliant Robin which he used to drive Chris to the "80s". Or more speficially, an Iron Maiden concert.
Chris Martin, however, like most people put in such trying circumstance, was unable to discern the difference.
Long story short: He's all about the synths and the drum machines now. You know, really cutting-edge computer-music.
Maybe he's taken inspiration from Franz Ferdinand, another rock band who have "dance-patterns", and therefore render Autechre COMPLETELY fucken obsolete.
I'm not sure what you're trying to imply here, but I'm pretty sure I resent it. What you don't get, Deano, is that I couldn't give two fucks about your hopelessly bland taste in music, what I actually object to is your bullshit assumption that anyone who disagrees with you is either:Having said that, do remember that it is extremely cool not to like X&Y, because, Coldplay are like, commercial now.
"Trying to be different"
Or
"Trying to be cool"
Since it's oh so "trendy" and everyone hates Coldplay now, you would think that the first point would be rendered obsolete, but there you go. As for the second point, there were a lot of people, me included, who hated Coldplay from the very beginning. I'm pretty sure you'll find my opinions of the bland... Sorry, I mean, "band", from back before time, if you use the search feature of this very site. People don't like Coldplay because people genuinely do not like Coldplay. I still don't understand why you can't appreciate that music is subjective. There is no "best album ever", everyone's hipinion is different.
Actually, my opinion is completely irrelevent: I've not heard of album. Speed of Sound, however, is pretty bad, and the video, which features all the band members attempting to spazz out and then discovering they're too polite to pull it off, is absolutely hilarious. They sound more like U2 than ever before, which can never be a good thing.
Big difference between taking inspiration and outright ripping off a riff, man.I'm pretty sure every artist has copied another one.
The real reason I've posted, however, is this:
I've been wanting to listen to some Sea and Cake for awhile now. Recommend me an album so I'll know which one to avoid.Sea and cake

... Sorry, sorry, was this entire post rude of me? Oh, ever so sorry. My mother's been attempting to school me on manners. It's actually a nice learning experience for the both of us. For example, she never would have GUESSED it was possible to have a fork jammed in THERE and live. -

Sure: One Bedroom. It has the most beautiful songs, the most complex arrangements, the most interesting production, the most "fun" grooves, and, you can actually HEAR Sam Prekop's voice! And what a wonderful voice. The real reason I've posted, however, is this:I've been wanting to listen to some Sea and Cake for awhile now. Recommend me an album so I'll know which one to avoid.
The only dissapointment is the "Sound and vision" cover, which sounds exactly like the original song does (only with updated technology, and Sam Prekop's distinct voice instead of David Bowie's distinct voice, which, I guess, means it's an improvement). -

I purchased the album today, and so far I like it. The album doesn't have the same stand out tracks that "A Rush Of Blood To The Head" features (See: God Put A Smile On Your Face, Clocks, Daylight, Warning Sign and A Whisper), but the album works well as a collective piece. The only sound that fails from X&Y thusfar is X&Y, ironically. The cover does not work though. It took me a while to deconstruct the message on the front, only to reveal what I expected it to be. Make Fair Trade was lackluster though. Good album. Not as good as A Rush Of Blood To The Head but worth my money.
