Not really sure if this has topic has been done before. I was too lazy to look, but either way, post the lyrics to your favorite songs here. Also provide the song name and artist, and why you like the lyrics. Obviously, you have to have at least paid attention to the lyrics in a song.
So here's one of my fav's:
Old Time Rock 'n' Roll by Bob Segar
Just take those old records off the shelf
I'll sit and listen to 'em by myself
Today's music ain't got the same soul
I like that old time rock n' roll
Don't try to take me to a disco
You'll never even get me out on the floor
In ten minutes I'll be late for the door
I like that old time rock n' roll
Still like that old time rock n' roll
That kind of music just soothes the soul
I reminisce about the days of old
With that old time rock n' roll
Won't go to hear them play a tango
I'd rather hear some blues or funky old soul
There's only one sure way to get me to go
Start playing old time rock n' roll
Call me a relic, call me what you will
Say I'm old-fashioned, say I'm over the hill
Today's music ain't got the same soul
I like that old time rock n' roll
Still like old time rock n' roll
That kind of music just soothes the soul
I reminisce about the days of old
With that old time rock n' roll
I like the lyrics of this song mainly because it speaks to me in the same way that it spoke to him when he wrote it 30-some-odd years ago. Today's music isn't that great. I prefer to listen to classic rock from the 60's 70's and 80's. Most rock beyond '89 sucks, aside from the artists from the 70's/80's who kept making albums (Metallica and Def Leppard come to mind). -

That attitude only helps to blind you from any and all new music that might be worthy of your attention.
Stop listening to the radio and start poking around online. I find it hard to believe that anyone can't find a band that's fairly new (first album post millennial) that they can't get into. Even my parents who pretty much refuse to put up with almost anything post-1990, love the Shins. Maybe that's not your style, but the fact is if you can't find music today that you don't like, you're not trying hard enough (particularly if you think Def Leppard have done anything worth listening to since 1979).

Time by Pink Floyd
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town,
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.
So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking.
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.
Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines.
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way.
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.
im not putting the rest of the lyrics cuz they have nothing to do with this part of the song i dont think
AND
Shine on You crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd
Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun
Shine on you crazy diamond
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky
Shine on you crazy diamond
You were caught in the crossfire of childhood and stardom, blown on the steel breeze
Come on you target for faraway laughter, come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!
You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon
Shine on you crazy diamond
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light
Shine on you crazy diamond
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision, rode on the steel breeze
Come on you raver, you seer of visions, come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!
Nobody knows where you are, how near or how far
Shine on you crazy diamond
Pile on many more layers, and I'll be joining you there
Shine on you crazy diamond
And we'll bask in the shadows of yesterday's triumph, sail on the steel breeze
Come on you boy child, you winner and loser, come on you miner for truth and delusion, and shine! -

I wasn't aware Def Leppard made anything worth listening to.(particularly if you think Def Leppard have done anything worth listening to since 1979).

I love you, Ride6.
Synapse to synapse... the possibility's thin.
I'm dressed up for free drinks and family greetings on your wedding date.
The figures in plastic on the wedding cake that i took were so real.
And i kept a distance... the complications cloud the postcards and blips through fiberoptics,
As the girls with the pigtails were running from little boys wearing bowties their parent bought...
"i'll catch you this time!"
Crashing through the parlor doors, what was your first reaction?
Screaming, drunk, disorderly... i'll tell you mine.
You were the one but i can't spit it out when the date's been set.
The white routine to be ingested inaccurately.
Synapse to synapse...
The sneaky kids had attached beer cans to the bumper so they could drive up and down the main drag.
People would turn to see who's making the racket. it's not the first time.
When they lay down the fish will swim upstream and i'll contest but they won't listen when the casualty rate's near 100%,
And there isn't a pension for second best or for hardly moving...
Crashing through the parlor doors, what was your first reaction?
Screaming, drunk, disorderly... i'll tell you mine.
You were the one but i can't spit it out when the date's been set.
The white routine to be ingested inaccurately.

Todays music is fantastic. There are some great bands around. I love 60s, 70s, and 80s music as well, but the 90s had great music as well as today. I will state that I do believe that from 1997 to 2004 I felt that there was a dip in the quality of music, but there still plenty of good music around, as there always has been.I like the lyrics of this song mainly because it speaks to me in the same way that it spoke to him when he wrote it 30-some-odd years ago. Today's music isn't that great. I prefer to listen to classic rock from the 60's 70's and 80's. Most rock beyond '89 sucks, aside from the artists from the 70's/80's who kept making albums (Metallica and Def Leppard come to mind).
But anyways, no whole songs from me, but just certain lines...
The Beach Boys - God Only Knows (1965)
"...If you should ever leave me
Though life would still go on believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would living do me?
God only knows what I'd be without you"
James Taylor - Shower The People (1976)
"You can play the game and you can act out the part
Even though you know it wasn't written for you
But tell me, how can you stand there with your broken heart
Ashamed of playing the fool
One thing can lead to another; it doesn't take any sacrifice
Oh, father and mother, sister and brother
If it feels nice, don't think twice
Just shower the people you love with love
Show them the way that you feel
Things are gonna work out fine if you only will..."
Peter Gabriel - Mercy Street (1986)
"looking down on empty streets, all she can see
are the dreams all made solid
are the dreams all made real
all of the buildings, all of those cars
were once just a dream
in somebody's head
she pictures the broken glass, she pictures the steam
she pictures a soul
with no leak at the seam
lets take the boat out
wait until darkness
let's take the boat out
wait until darkness comes
nowhere in the corridors of pale green and grey
nowhere in the suburbs
in the cold light of day
there in the midst of it so alive and alone
words support like bone
dreaming of mercy st.
wear your inside out
dreaming of mercy
in your daddy's arms again
dreaming of mercy st.
swear they moved that sign
dreaming of mercy
in your daddy's arms..."
Oasis - My Big Mouth (1997)
...And round this town you've ceased to be
Thats what you got for sleeping with the enemy
Where angels fly, you won't play
I guess you've gotta take the blame for my big mouth..."
Thrice - In Years To Come (2002)
"...I want to write the perfect song,
and play it just for you,
while you are tangled up in sleep
I need you more than i'll ever know,
until i stop breathing,
my lungs will take you for granted."

So, um.. What has 7 arms and sucks!??Def Leppard
right.
I think some lyrics that stick with me the most are my friend's, in particular:
"Took my lover on the highway
And what remains of her body
Is in the desert of Arizona"
"Stone dead drunk in the trunk of a former baby boy
who never quite outgrew his preference for the young"
and
"His fruit felt heavy in her stomach"
I don't hear lyrics when I listen to music, but sometimes phrases just stick with me.Edited by penguinBOB, 06 June 2008 - 03:55 PM.

Just below the surface
Of an ordinary town
Burn the devils underground
Murder fills the skies above
My eyes upon the earth
Why didn't I realize?
See for the first time
In my life defending
All that remains
Drowning in flames
The same old story
But the names have all been changed
The fatal mistake you made
Was of all the hearts you'd slain
How you left alive my bloody valentine
Gravity unshackles you
And now you float away
Looking back upon your grave
You can't outrun your shadow
You can only shut the lights
Pluck out your wicked eyes
See for the first time
In your life defending
All that remains
Drowning in flames
The same old story
But the names have all been changed
The fatal mistake you made
Was of all the hearts you'd slain
How you left alive my bloody valentine
Aiming at the enemy
I only smash the mirror
Pluck out your wicked eyes
See for the first time in your life defending
All that remains
Drowning in flames
The same old story
But the names have all been changed
The fatal mistake you made
Was of all the hearts you'd slain
How you kept alive my bloody valentine

Have you come to die
Or have you come to learn?
The deeper do we dive
The longer to return
Said we won't survive
So now we have to burn
Crashing through the sky
I'll be coming home
And there's a look upon your face
As if there's something out of place
You disappear without a trace
Now you're going home
And I've seen the ghost that never dies
Stoking the fire behind your eyes
I read the words between the lies
I've seen the serpents in disguise
This moment speeding by
Is never to return
Running out of time
For lessons to be learned
Said we won't survive
So now we have to burn
Crashing through the sky
I'll be coming home
And there's a look upon your face
As if there's something out of place
You disappear without a trace
Now you're going home
And I've seen the ghost that never dies
Stoking the fire behind your eyes
I read the words between the lies
I've seen the serpents in disguise
Teardrops in the rain
They all look the same
Dancing down the drain
A signal out of range
And I've seen the ghost that never dies
Stoking the fire behind your eyes
I read the words between the lies
I've seen the serpents in disguise
And when I get those angels calling
Where did you go, I need to know
What is in my mind
This side of the waking world
Straight to the back of the line
By their design this happens every time
I lose my mind
Cause you're so bright I go blind
Send us a sign, mercy for my kind
This side of the waking world
Will I be ready to find
When I hear those angels calling?
Where did you go, I need to know
What is in my mind
This side of the waking world

Deify by Disturbed
All my devotion betrayed
I am no longer afraid
I was too blinded to see
How much you've stolen from me
You wanna' know why I feel so horrified?
I let my innocence die
You wanna' know why I can't be pacified?
You made me bury something
I won't be sleeping tonight
I only wanted the blessing made
Now I've been labeled a renegade
It seems so clear now what I must do
You're no immortal
I won't let them
Deify you
They view you as the new messiah
Deify you
Renew belief in some demented man
You wanna' know why it seems the passion's died?
We've all been living this lie
You wanna' know why my will's been fortified?
You've made me hunger again
Good luck sleeping tonight
The song is actually about President Bush, but I think Jesus fits the bill nicely.
EDIT: I took Ride6's advice and looked around for some current music, and I didn't find much. Disturbed is okay, but it's not great.Edited by Xin, 09 June 2008 - 07:50 PM.

That night I remember what you slipped in my glass
We came rewinding when
I foamed at the mouth while the lights winked at me
And now my shape is kept
The rain it can't hide, wash the pain from this hex
Is it so permanent?
Did she catch a left eye when it blinks three times
Or once just to seal you in?
In your drunken breath did it stain like us
In place of poison heat?
I gotta rid this world of your intention
Swap the corpse in the casket
Give me that corpse please
The one that tore nightly
I really want it now
Fold the arms slowly
Don't want you to hold me
It fits just like a glove
Does he make you feel alright?
When I seep inside your truth through suspicious little coughs
You sank your nails inside a key while the door you shut closed up
The black stockings you kept smell of wet cigarette
Torn of lust that you could not keep
I have slept inside your fault to have you keep me here on this leash
For the rest of your pets I will feed to this theft
As we consummate the vows of defeat
And when you pray for an end to this I do believe this is eternity
Give me that corpse please
The one that tore nightly
I really want it now
Fold the arms slowly
Don't want you to hold me
It fits just like a glove
Your closet is bulging
White marrow withholding
Does he make you feel alright?
Give me that corpse please
The one that tore nightly
I really want it now
Fold the arms slowly
Don't want you to hold me
It fits just like a glove
Your closet is bulging
White marrow withholding
Does he make you feel alright?
Never heard a man speak like this man before
Never heard a man speak like this man before
All the days of my life ever since I've been born
Never heard a man speak like this man before
Watch me now
Say it, say it, say it loud
Say it, say it, say it loud
Hold your heavy burden
In a pocket full of drink that I have drunk
Spit the remnants in your direction
This is the closest to any kingdom that you will come
I'm starting to feel a miscarriage coming on
It's numbing a stump clearing in my throat
And I just can't lose grip of it
She fumigated my mental hygiene
I'm all out of pulse but I know you can resuscitate me
Never heard a man speak like this man before
Never heard a man speak like this man before
All the days of my life ever since I've been born
Never heard a man speak like this man before
Never heard a man speak like this man before
Never heard a man speak like this man before
All the days of my life ever since I've been born
Never heard a man speak like this man before
Watch me now

Set It Off Like Napalm - Emarosa
Out of place, put him down, he's all strung out
Don't hold your breath for too long, this moments fading out now
Our souls have caught on fire
Well I don't really wanna walk that line
I don't really wanna cross that line
Lets make this now or never
Fade it out, the storms that I love
The heat is getting stronger and I plan to take advantage,
No matter what they say
The tide is slowly going out.
Oh god, please open your eyes, it's time to finalize
Lets make this now or never
Set it off and let it burn
Take your form let it be the scariest, let it be most furious.
I am the boy who sets your girl on fire
And when she dances oh she knows it's right.
Well send them all to hell. -

So bad, yet so bad.
13. I Lit Your Baby On Fire
I spent all my money on drugs, and couldn’t afford to fly
I took a greyhound bus, you and your brat sat next to me
It wouldn’t shut up, so I lit it on fire
For 30 seconds it was louder, then it shut up
[Chorus:]
I lit your, I lit your, I lit your, baby on fire [x4]
You came back from the bathroom and smelled something burning
You realized it was your baby and I started to laugh
You asked the driver to pull over, but he laughed at you too
You yelled at me, so I roasted some marshmallows on your kid -

Dread And The Fugitive Mind by Megadeth
Let me introduce myself I’m a social disease
I’ve come for your wealth leave you on your knees
No time for feeling sorry, I got here on my own
I won’t ask for mercy, I choose to walk alone
What’s yours is mine and what’s mine is mine too
If you shake my hand better count your fingers
What if I do get caught? what if there is no judgment?
If I’m right I lose nothing, if you’re right I lose it all
I ought to get caught because I’m doing something wicked
I’m guilty haunted by my fear and the only consequences
Are dread and the fugitive mind
You built walls to protect you so no one will infect you
Pursued by those out there that vanish in thin air
Come a long way to find what you really left behind
You don’t know when the end is but it’s coming fast
What’s yours is mine and what’s mine is mine too
If you shake my hand better count your fingers
What if I do get caught? what if there is no judgment?
If I’m right I lose nothing, if you’re right I lose it all
I ought to get caught because I’m doing something wicked
I’m guilty haunted by my fear and the only consequences
Are dread and the fugitive mind
The song's great, and I interperet the lyrics as sort of a metaphor for my life.
And gir, I found Disturbed at Barns & Noble. In the music section they have a thing where you can search for any CD ever made, and I was looking at Metallica's more recent material. Then you have the Similiar Music button, and that took me to a list that had Disturbed on it.
