My theory is that the main reason stuff like this is happening, is because with the power of social media, the news, and the internet, It has made it where everything is even more of a liability than before. The universities are trying to protect their reputation, so they tighten up their rules to do just that. The last thing a college or university wants to happen is for someone to get hurt in a hazing incident(for example) and then it be plastered all over facebook, youtube, twitter, etc.
Now why in the world they considered Pokemon card dangerous back in the day is beyond me. -

Funny thing, my school started to sharpen their rules during exam week just this week.
When people look at their phone after an exam they will be graded with a 1/10. The exams are made to test our skill at the things we had to study not about how long we can go without looking on our phones.
This wasn't one of the most hatable rules because when you put your phone in your bag you won't look at it. But now we also gotta leave our bags out of the class leaving us with like 15 minutes of NOTHING to do when we're done with the exams because we can't get another subject to study untill we can leave. and they even grade people who have ear-plugs hanging out of their shirt with an 1/10..
Things like these happen anywhere I think, I remember in my primary school we had a new playground and we decided to try new games on the new playground things. But every game was ''banned'' because someone got hurt by it -

Umm chorkiel I wouldn't consider any of that exam stuff sharpening myself but rather how it should be lol, it's always been like that here, seriously it's to stop cheating, could always pre record something on those headphones or text on the phone
. Why don't you just do what a lot of us did when finished, me included, have a nap lol, that works. I napped for like half hour after one of my exams back in the day

Back in the 90s it was tougher. No Tebowing in the halls, huh? No joke, my middle school had a rule that teachers could not break up hallway fights unless they saw blood.
I racked up a total of 27 days of suspension then and another 13 in high school. Trouble making without risk of arrest was so much fun -

If your gonna do shit just dont get caught, SIMPLESSS
School was a nightmare for me man, I wasn't allowed in a couple classes, gym class for e.g because i hit the teacher with a basketball it was accidental but trying to make that point against a teacher to other teachers just didn't happen,
I was an ass in school really, They were trying to send me to other schools but because they were in different gang areas they couldn't send me there so after getting suspended a shitload of times i got my act together for the last year, As far as im aware i still hold the record for most referalls in a year standing at 234 or 35 im not sure but normally there is 1 referal folder for the entire year so i was in 3rd year at the time but i had my own folder thats how bad it was .... what a complete assss. -

chorkiel, all of those things sound completely reasonable. It is very easy for someone to cheat using their cell phones or listening to lectures/notes using earphones. When I took finals in New Zealand, we had to leave our bags (with cell phones inside) at the front of the room. If your cell phone went off, you were automatically fined $100 or so even though it's in your bag at the front of the room. They also didn't announce test rooms until the day of the exam to prevent people from writing notes on desks. -

Last year I got in trouble for 'backtalking' to a teacher when I simply answered a question she asked me. She thought I was trying to be a smart ass and gave me detention.
We also have dodgeball banned for being dangerous yet we still have other games like spiderball which are nearly the same things. -

I think the only thing my university is remotely strict about is freaking parking tickets, and the only reason it's an issue is there's only enough parking on campus for about 3/4 of the commuters. I and classmates have even used pocket knives in class like no big deal (I don't remember the exact context, but no one flipped out), and most everyone carries them around. I know police don't monitor any of the parties so no one really cares if alcohol goes to minors - they just want everyone quiet by certain hours. Then again, in a town where professors have been known to cancel class due to good skiing conditions, can't say I'm particularly surprised. Just happy it's so laid back. -

i hit the teacher with a basketball
Lol, I thougt I was badass because I smashed a volleyball at mine ;p
I get your point they say phones away. But I don't get why someone should get a lower grade for looking on his phone AFTER the exam has been taken away from him. Ofc they should get punished but a friend of mine is gonna get send from school now because his grades are too low and now they're not too low because he didn't study for his grades but because they saw him look at his phone what time it is. Quite unreasonable if you ask me.chorkiel, all of those things sound completely reasonable. hopefully you guys think this is as good as i think it is.
Playing basketball in year 3 and a kid threw a basketball, now the ball misses the net thing and bounces off the hoop. The ball does a mad fly through the air and lands rightttt on the principals head. Her glasses fell off and broke on impact, so they kid who threw he ball had to pay for new glasses, got 15 minutes in the corner of the playground and lost the whole schools right to any sorts of ball games, because of physics basically. -

....Glad I'm on the right side of the pond. It's really terrible to see what has happened in the US the last 30-some years. It seems to have gone from a country of opportunity and example to one of rules, regulations and fear.
You can say a lot about the Netherlands, about our (often way too friendly) social system, our drug policy and since yesterday even our (former) government. However, it feels like we at least don't get carried away in fear of law suits, wars, a scratch during physics or whatever else comes to mind...
(Not trying to bash the US, I actually love it. I just think this aspect has deteriorated quite a lot, and Believe it's a pity.) -
