....Glad I'm on the right side of the pond. It's really terrible to see what has happened in the US the last 30-some years. It seems to have gone from a country of opportunity and example to one of rules, regulations and fear.
You can say a lot about the Netherlands, about our (often way too friendly) social system, our drug policy and since yesterday even our (former) government. However, it feels like we at least don't get carried away in fear of law suits, wars, a scratch during physics or whatever else comes to mind...
(Not trying to bash the US, I actually love it. I just think this aspect has deteriorated quite a lot, and Believe it's a pity.)
The laws may be more strict, but a lot of the general atmosphere is far more 'live and let live', and not at all as judgmental as most Europeans. Which is hard to believe when you see some American politicians, but those stopped representing the people a long time ago. -

I sure hope you're right, 'cause if you have a serious candidate for presidency that dares to claim we (the Netherlands) kill our elderly and after those kinds of lies he still appeals to some people something's wrong. I really don't see how those kinda people get any support at all, but I fear they do in America. -

Sad thing is that statement barely made the news here, had to get it from nieuws.nl. He dropped out of the race though, the only one left running against Romney is the guy who wants a populated moonbase.. -

The fact it barely made the news in America is the very problem. The media should bash politicians like him for launching those kinds of lies into the public until they'd no longer stand any chance. The fact someone like him is the ''runner up'' for the republican candidadship for presidency of one of the most powerful countries in the world is quite frightening.
P.s. that last statement about Romney doesn't make it any better either. -

The other day, I got sent to in-school-suspension for communicating through a door that connects two classrooms.
The Class on the other side of the door was gym, where nobody does anything. I got in trouble, "on account of disrupting a class".
What have they come to that they need to put kids in ISS for doing barely anything more than nothing?
I guess it must mean that American youth are behaving better than before, and in result, the enforcing staff (police, school admins, etc) has tightened its grip, and needs to fill up the 'problem student' spots that have since become empty or very bare.
I have a theory that states that every trend in one generation is the effect of influence of previous generations. I could try to go deeper with this topic, but I'm so tired. -

Comet, I agree with you a 100% America is becoming pussified and people are way too over sensitive about everything . Although I view the pussification differently. I always sit down and talk with my grandpa and he tells me stories about the old days, back when people didn't tip toe within the constraints of being politically correct. For example, I was reading an article in a college newspaper about how an intramural team had to forfeit a victory against a predominantly Asian American team because the Asian team felt alienated since the fans of the other team were chanting "USA! USA!...". Another article I read was about a man who's deed restrictions prohibited from flying the American flag. For the smallest things- jokes, comments, whatever, people are always quick to turn it into an act of hate and call upon some organization to make a big stink. My own race is big on this and I find it frustrating. It feels like every day I flip on cable news and I see Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson with the entire NAACP brigade protesting because someone cracked a joke or made a comment that they deemed as racist and hateful. Granted, obviously I am opposed to genuine racism and hate, but 9 times out of 10 those two things don't play roll (perfect example: this youtube video). Personally, I don't even get offended when white people use the term "nigga" (depending on the context of course). I am very passionate about this whole topic and could go on and on about it. I am just sick of how everyone is so concerned with hurting other peoples feelings these days over the smallest shit, and therefore, are afraid to speak their minds.
Comet, as a member of Miami University's Greek Life, I also agree that Greek life nationally is experience a major pussification that parallels the cultural pussification of the United States. Honestly, sounds like wherever you go to school, you have it worst than we do if your chapters are getting suspended or put on probation for that sort of hazing and driving kegs to a formal. Different houses at Miami University swing between probation and suspension on pretty much a semester-to-semester basis, but typically its for a blatant offense. My major issue is the fact that IFC and Panhel now feel the obligation to stick their nose into every aspect of Greek life. Parties, rush events, philanthropies, formals, etc- nothing is safe from the watchful eye of IFC. Everything must be approved and sanctioned now. Apparently, my school's Greek Week used to be a really fun week, not anymore with IFC putting the clamps down on it. Plus, it feels like the larger the house, the larger the magnifying glass IFC has on your chapter. Granted what I am saying so far has been strictly complaining, but let me just clear this up by underlining the fact that IFC's relation with Greek Life was not always like this. Back in the 80s and early 90s, IFC lets the Greek community run wild at most universities. Although that sounds risky, it worked back then and there were no issues. In fact, I am almost positive there were also fewer arrests and citations made back then. -

Wow. My school is damn amazing then. I can't tell you how many times teachers have heard me say Fuck in class when nothing happened to me. Might be an Honors track thing, and I have class with preps ( i'm not a prep by no means). -

Thanks for bumping this Shotgun cause I completely missed inversed post. I agree with everything you said, and it's all really unfortunate. You touched on a major part of it which is all the groups and organizations that we have these days that in my opinion contribute nothing to society but still view themselves as peaceworkers. Going along with the USA chanting you mentioned, back during Linsanity when one of the ESPN writers titled his article 'Another Chink in the Armor', and Jeremy Lin and every Asian I talked to actually just thought it was hilarious that the guy would do that, yet some organization took it upon themselves to get the guy fired and say how insulting it was
It's just way too easy nowadays to make money off of contributing absolutely nothing to society, by suing people for pointless shit and bitching and complaining. Now this is kind of getting into a different subject, but I really don't think that things like women rights organizations and all these different racial organizations should even be around at all. Black people are just as racist as white people are, and women have just as many rights as men do, so why do these things even exist. I feel like the people that represent these demographics as leaders of these groups are actually in the minority on how that group of people feel as a whole. Criticize me for saying this all you want, but if a white person calls a black person a nigga I really wish they would just take it and say 'you're right, I am', as a white person would take being called a cracker by a black person. And if a woman feels she's being treated differently at a business I wish she could just either take it or move to another business, just like a man would do if he was treated differently for working somewhere like a jewlery store. I don't understand why we need to be suing each other over this stuff -

So, let me explain something to all of you who don't get it. If something is against the rules, and it wasn't enforced before, but suddenly it is, that doesn't mean the world has been pussified. It means the rules are now being enforced. Like Mr. MorganFan: to you I say, I bet it wasn't your first run in with the principal at the school, was it? Tell your mom what you want, but the teachers had it out for you and you know exactly why. It's not because they're pussies. I assume, and probably correctly, that it's because you were being a dick. Don't be a dick, and no problems.
Inversed... The example you gave about the flag is a well documented dispute with the guy's home owner's association. He signed on to the rules before buying the house, and now it's a problem? Poor chap, with his rights being infringed on and the sopping wet pussy of America coming down on him all at once... And the guy who said "chink in the armour"? If I walked into my job and said that the difference between an Ethiopian and a pair of pants is that that the Ethiopian only has one fly on it, I'd expect to be fired, too. Because I, in no way, should ever say that at work. At home? Bar? Fucking hilarious. Because they've got flies on them. Dirty fucks. Is this the appropriate time to invoke "nigga"? Probably not, right? Guess I'm a pussy for not using it? No. I don't use it because I shouldn't use it. Anyway, there's a clear dichotomy between what's acceptable in professional and personal lives, and if you don't get that, you're fucked no matter how many people you call a pussy. (pro tip: don't call some one a pussy at work.)
Comet, I'm going to go ahead and assume that you're not black and not a woman, and you don't have any idea what the fuck you're talking about. Disproportionality of race and gender exists. That's why there's special organizations to deal with the issue of it. Form your white student union if you feel so inclined. -

I was going to go through the thread and respond to a couple more of the things in here, but I only got up to this gem in the first post:First of all, back in my time at high school I saw dodgeball get banned from gym class because it was deemed too dangerous. Why is it too dangerous now but not for the past 50+ years?
...before I realized what a waste of time that would be. Lead paint was safe for 50 years. Apparently you've eaten your fair share. I don't agree that kids should be shielded from all physical contact, but if that's your only reasoning, then fuck it, dude. -

^thank god this guy is back
Everyone wants to be free of rules. This doesn't quite work, so we have to punish the people that break them. Murder somebody -> Prison/Death Penalty. It's only right. Personally I think any serious crime should be punished with the death penalty, and minor offenses in school punished more severely. Set an example so no one else will do it.
We don't need to do stupid shit in school or elsewhere. Anyone who's complained about tightened rules, there's plenty good reason for them. Saying the rules are because of pussies isn't a very good reason. -

If people would just get up and do what they need to without complaint, the world would be much happier
Inversed that video was the most stupid accusation I've ever heard -

You are correct. I fucked up the punch line. Reverse it and it'll make a lot more sense. How many flies does a pair of pants have on it then? I don't get it.
